The Rasmus : Interview avec Emppu Suhonen (EN/FR)

[English Version Below]

English Version

The Rasmus are coming back strong this year. After a show at Eurovision, they put out a new album, Rise, followed by a tour in Europe. It was then the occasion for us to meet in Paris Emilia « Emppu » Suhonen, the new guitarist of the band since a year. Here, we talk about the dark years of the band, and how everything changed after Emppu arrived in the band and the show at Eurovision.

Hi! How are you?
Hi! We just arrived to Paris a few hours ago, but we’re already having fun here.

I believe it’s been a very long time The Rasmus have not played in Paris.
Yes! I am not sure when was the last time they played here because I have just been in the band for over a year but they have already been here in the same venue (La Maroquinerie), ten years ago. The guys were talking about this place before we got here so they know it.

I think the last gig in Paris was in 2017, and their last French gigs in 2018. So, how does it feel to be here? Have you ever played in Paris before?
I have never played in Paris. I have been here before in my life for vacations but never for playing. I really love the vibe of the venue, it’s like an old school rock club. Some other venues have been very pushy with chandeliers on the roof and all of that, but this one has the very authentic rock vibe.

The room is very cosy for sure! And the show is sold out.
Yes! It feels super awesome, especially after covid where musicians have not been able to perform at all. The band has been struggling a lot, with Pauli, the first guitarist and funding member, leaving the band. They almost broke up. Now, we’re alive and well, and things are getting better. It’s really awesome to see sold out venues for us on this tour.

This tour is following a new album, Rise, that came out exactly one month ago. But, with everything that happened in the band, I can imagine the writing was not easy. When did you arrive in the band during the process of writing this new album, and how did you influence it?
That’s a good question actually. The album was already ready and done when I got in the band, but it had a different name, Night Division. But then, Pauli had already left, they did not know what to do, if they wanted to continue… But suddenly, as I arrived, we got all these new plans, new energy and good vibes. The album as it was did not feel complete anymore, even thought hey had 10-11 songs already, it was not reflecting the band anymore. So we decided to record more songs, and I was involved in them. We recorded 4 new songs, 3 of those made it to the new album. Then, it started to be our complete new album. I am talking about Jezebel, Live And Never Die, and Rise. Then, we changed the name of the album as well. So, it feels nice that I am in the album, even though not on every song, I feel included.

Then, the title Rise is symbolizing the fact that you rise again after the struggle?
Exactly. Lauri was feeling very down, not knowing what was the future of the band. He’s been very open about it so I can talk for him, but it was his whole life, and they were all so worried about the future. I kind of sense that as soon as I got in the band, things just clicked and the vibe was suddenly better, we started to go in the right direction again. So, to me, Rise is a very good name for the album.

It’s the 10th album of the band. Is it difficult to join a band that has been around for so long?
People have been thinking that is must be hard to join a band that has been around so long. For us, things felt very natural. We actually grew up in the same area in Helsinki, we have similar backgrounds with the guys. I also played guitar for a long time and toured already with many other bands. So overall it was not that hard, even though the band is well established and well known. It all went very well, and since the first audition it felt very natural together, so it feels good.

You have been part of the writing of the song Jezebel, which was chosen to represent Finland at Eurovision this year. How was it to play there?
It was an intense experience. We did all this Eurovision thing the whole spring. First we had the Finnish pre-selection for Eurovision and it was the first thing we have accomplished together. Even though it was very intense and we had to work and practice every day, give it a lot of energy, it was very good for us as a group, it brought us together. We had a big goal together, and we had to achieve it all together as a new group. So it was very good for the band. And then, the overall vibe was great. I have never been a big Eurovision fan, as a teenager and punk rocker I thought it was not for me. Now that I have experienced it, I think we all fell in love with the concept of unity. Eurovision started after the 2nd World War to bring countries and nations together through music. So, it has a beautiful background. And the general vibe at Eurovision song contest was really nice, everyone was happy and loving.

Following Eurovision song contest, you reimagined In The Shadows with the winners of the contest, The Kalush Orchestra. How did that happen?
We met the guys in Turin during the whole Eurovision thing. We played 3 gigs together; I think we first met in Amsterdam or Madrid during one of the pre-party for Eurovision. Obviously, they have this whole horrible situation going there, in their country. So we were feeling a lot of empathy for them and wanted to speak a lot with them, even though they don’t speak very well english. We got to know each other, and then they played this amazing version of In The Shadows with flutes and traditional Ukrainian music. So, after the shows, we started to think that we should do something more together than the spontaneous gigs. We decided to go for this collaboration and reimagined In The Shadows, I think it ended up pretty nice and the feedback has been awesome.

It’s really funny and huge to hear this iconic song in an Ukrainian style now.
Yes it is! And even though the song is 20 years old, when I listen to the lyrics now, in this situation, I get goosebumps. The lyrics, especially the second verse, has a whole new meaning in the context of Ukraine nowadays. You can reinterpret them into a powerful message.

If you have any final message to address to French fans, it’s the moment, and then we will finish here!
Well, in general, it is amazing to be here, it is my first time with this band in France and in Paris, I am really looking forward for this sold out gig! It’s going to be sweaty, but amazing!

Thank you so much!
Thank you too, see you at the show!
