A l’occasion de la sortie de leur nouvel album intitulé Another Side Of You, produit par le label Napalm Records, nous avons eu l’opportunité de poser quelques questions à Fabienne Erni, chanteuse principale du groupe.

- Peux tu nous présenter le groupe ?
Nous sommes Illumishade, nous avons notre deuxième album qui sort le 16 février 2024. Nous avons commencé en 2020 pendant la période du Corona Virus. Nous avons sorti notre premier album, donc oui c’était un peu spécial pour nous comme pour tout le monde. Maintenant nous sommes sur notre première tournée européenne et notre première tournée tout court.
2. Comme dis plus haut, tu as commencé pendant le Covid, est-ce que ce n’est pas compliqué de se lancer à cette période ?
Le truc c’est que nous avions tout planifié au 15 Mai 2020, mais pour changer la date nous ne savions rien. Je veux dire en 2020, nous n’avions aucune idée de ce qu’il allait se passer ou si tout allait redevenir normal, donc nous nous en sommes resté sur ce qui était prévu, même si cela était de la self production, et c’était plutôt cool. Nous avons pu faire une release party en streaming pour que toutes les personnes dans le monde qui voulait nous voir, le pouvait. Et je pense que cela était le seul avantage. Je pense que pour tous les groupes qui ont sorti un album pendant ces années, c’était un challenge.
3. Le groupe vient juste de signer avec Napalm Records, comment est-ce de travailler avec eux ?
Pour l’instant c’est bien. Je pense que pour nous c’était le bon moment pour faire un pas dans une autre direction parce que quand vous sortez quelque chose par vous même, ça apporte son lot de défi et un poids financier. Tout va ensemble. Donc c’était clair et nous voulions travailler avec une autre équipe aussi. Napalm semblait être le bon partenaire pour ça, et pour l’instant c’est cool. On verra bien ce que cela va donner quand l’album va sortir mais je suis sûre que cela nous a ouvert quelques portes, ce qui est vraiment bien. Nous leur faisons confiance donc on verra bien où ça nous mènera.
4. Another Side Of You est le deuxième album et il suit directement le premier. Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur l’histoire qu’il y a derrière ?
Le nouvel album Another Side Of You est comme une compilation de chanson. Ce que je veux dire c’est que notre premier album était un concept album avec une histoire sur le monde en 2020. Je pense que nous avons tous dû réfléchir sur ce que l’on voulait pour le groupe ou pour ce projet. Est-ce que l’on veux juste du studio ou est-ce que l’on veux pouvoir partir en tournée encore et encore ? C’est pour cela que nous avons mis autant de temps avec ce nouvel album. C’était il y a presque 4 ans, ce qui est bien parce que nous avions le temps de trouver quelque chose. Ce nouvel opus est plus personnel, plus dans la réalité, plus humain disons parce que nous avions une approche plus fantastique dans le premier album. Alors que celui-ci est plus personnel, plus sur des sujets actuels et des hauts et des bas que les membres du groupe ont pu avoir comme des ascenseurs émotionnels et la manière dont nous continuons avec le monde que nous avons créée. Mais je pense que ça ira quelque part pour le troisième album puisque nous commençons a écrire des chansons, parce que nous voulions quelque chose sans visions d’ensemble au début, et nous ne savons pas ce qu’il en sera. Et une fois que nous avions négocié avec Napalm Records c’était plutôt clair, nous voulions faire un autre album et comme tout semblait à sa place, nous avons pu travailler complétement sur les dernières chansons pour en faire un vrai album. Donc comme je disais c’est plus une compilation et c’est une énorme différence par rapport au premier.
5. Quelle chanson dans cet album te représente le plus ?
Oh, c’est une question difficile. C’est dur de choisir. Je pense Elegy est probablement un bon choix. Elegy a vraiment cette petite touche Heavy dans la mélodie et les chœurs, le coté catchy, et quelques aspects de Prog. Elle a également le paysage merveilleux de Mirjam Schnedl (claviers). Je pense que tout est bien combiné. Mais cet album est très versatile. Je dirais que c’est ce que l’on voulait pour le groupe. Nous voulions que ce soit un terrain de jeu où nous pouvions juste être créatifs. C’est comme notre libérateur émotionnel sans penser à quoi que ce soit ou à rentrer dans une case. C’est l’essence du groupe. C’est un peu difficile de choisir car je pense qu’en fin de compte qu’une chanson comme Hummingbird est totalement pour nous et c’est très variable. Tout est une représentation de notre groupe parce que nous voulions vraiment que toutes les influences des différents membres ait une place dans ce projet et juste s’amuser avec et ne pas penser à rentrer dans une boite ou une catégorie.
6. Tu as juste pris un peu de chaque personne dans chaque chanson pour faire cet album ?
Oui, exactement. Et donner une chance à chaque idée. Disons que j’avais cette ballade au piano qui est assez ancienne, c’est la dernière chanson. Je voulais vraiment faire quelque chose en suisse allemand et je voulais utiliser cette démo/ballade au piano que j’ai crée en 2017. Je me suis dit ça serait cool de l’avoir dans l’album, et nous avons réussi à la démarquer des autres parce qu’il n’y pas d’influence d’autres groupes. Mais nous voulions donner une chance à toutes ces idée et chansons.
7. Cloudreader ressemble beaucoup à une chanson Pop/Rock mélodique et mélodramatique qui nous pousse à réfléchir sur le sens de la vie. Est-ce que ça a été fait pour ça ?
Je pense que oui. C’est là pour répandre une bonne énergie. Cela parle du fait d’avoir besoin de comprendre ce que l’on traverse et de continuer à voir les choses du bon côté, et comment les choses s’éclaircissent quand on les affronte. Je pense que c’est l’une de nos lumières les plus claires et brillantes de cet album et nous l’avons sorti en single et je dois dire que j’était un peu sceptique mais apparemment les gens ont eu l’air d’aimer même si ce n’est pas aussi sombre que les autres chansons, ou peut-être pas comme les Metalleux l’aurait voulu. Mais on a eu un super retour et je pense que cela vient de là, du message ou des émotions que nous avons voulu provoquer chez les gens, juste un sentiment léger et de paix et je pense que ça a marché avec certaines personnes et c’est bien.
8. Verliebt est en featuring avec Coen Janssen d’Epica, comment as-tu réussi à le faire travailler sur ce projet ?
Jonas (guitare) et moi nous jouons aussi dans Eluveitie, donc nous sommes venus à rencontrer les membres d’Epica par les festivales et certains concerts où nous avons joué ensemble. Et quand nous avons écouté cette démo au piano, tout le groupe était à la montagne pour une semaine pour tout finaliser avant d’aller au studio et c’est là qu’on s’est dit que ça serait génial d’avoir un pianiste qui mettrait sa patte, sa touche, sa propre magie à la chanson, et évidemment nous pensions à Coen Janssen car c’est vraiment un mec adorable et talentueux. L’album est mixé et masterisé par Yost Vandenbroucke qui est également néerlandais, Coen connaissait Yost très bien et ça tombait plutôt bien et malgré un emploi du temps serré et court nous avons réussi. Et je pense qu’il a vraiment apporté sa magie à la chanson et ça la complète.
9. Qu’est que tu dirais à quelqu’un qui ne connait pas Illumishade pour lui donner envie de découvrir ?
Si tu cherches une vaste étendue de musique allant de la ballade au piano en passant par l’orchestre, les ballades rock au Heavy sombre ou encore du Metal mélodique avec un peu de prog alors va écouter.
10. Dans toutes ta discographie quelles est la chanson que tu préfère faire en live et pourquoi ?
Je dois dire que je m’amuse beaucoup avec Enemy, nous venons juste de commencer la tournée donc je ne suis pas encore dans une routine de jouer la setlist plusieurs fois puisque nous avons fait 11 concerts avant cette tournée. Et encore ça s’est déroulé sur plusieurs années. Et c’est la première fois que nous jouons 5 jours de suite la même setlist et de s’y faire. Donc c’est vraiment cool et je sens que j’aime vraiment toutes les chansons donc je ne sais pas vraiment et je cherche dans chacune des nouvelles chansons. les une après les autres je suis là en mode ok celle-là j’aime bien. Je pense qu’Enemy est cool parce qu’elle a ce côté Heavy avec un chœur très mélodique et des aspects assez prog donc ouais j’aime bien celle là.
11. Es-tu excitée de jouer le nouvel album sur scène ?
Oui bien sûr, nous avons des concerts pour révéler l’album, 2 en Suisse en mars. On attends vraiment de voir mais ça va être cool. Nous étions justement en train de parler de savoir quelles chansons on allait jouer ou pas. Nous avons également nos amis d’Ad Infinitum et Lyrre qui nous rejoignent ainsi que Voice Of Ruin. Cela va être vraiment cool.
12. Pour conclure cette interview les derniers mots sont pour toi !
Nous sommes vraiment super excités de pouvoir enfin venir faire les concerts prévus et pouvoir venir en Amérique du Nord ou en France. J’espère que cette année encore nous aurons des plans de prévus. - Can you first introduce the bands for us ?
We are Illumishade, we have our second album coming in February 16th. We started back in 2020, in the Corona Times. We released our first album. So yeah, was a bit special times for us, for everybody. Now we are currently on our first Europe tour or on our first tour ever.
2. Like you said, that you’re studying during Covid times wasn’t a bit complicated to actually start at this time specifically ?
The thing is, we planned everything on 15th of May 2020. And then just to change the date, we didn’t know. I mean, back then in 2020, we were like we have no idea if it will go back to normal or not or whatever. So we were like, we just stick with the plan. We did it, ourselves, like it was a do it yourself release. But we still decided to stick with the plan, which actually was quite cool. We could do a streaming release show. So at least everybody from all over the world who wanted to watch it could watch it. I think that was like the only advantage. I think for every band that released an album during these years it was challenging for sure.
3. So you just signed with Napalm Record how it stood up with them. Like, how is it to work with them ?
It’s been great so far. I think for us it was really just the time to make a step into another direction, because if you release everything yourself, it brings some challenges, it brings some financial burdens. Everything comes together. So it was like clear that we want to work with another team as well. So napalm seemed to be the right partner for that. So far it’s cool, and let’s see how it will be when we will actually release the first album, but I’m sure it already opened a few doors, which is great, which is very nice. So we trust them and, let’s see where it will lead to.
4. So another side of you is the second album and it follows the first one. Can you tell us more about the story that’s behind it?
So, the new record, another side of you, it is more like a compilation of songs. I mean, as I said, we released the first album, which was a concept album with a story a whole world behind in 2020. I think we all had to think, what do we want with this band or with this project, do we want it to be just a studio, or do we want to go and tour more and more? I think, and that’s why it took us so long as well to continue, with the new album. I mean, it’s now almost four years apart. Which is fine because it just had to take this time. We had to have this time for everybody to figure out. The new record is for sure more personal, more in the reality here, it’s more like human, let’s say, because we had more like a fantasy world and fantasy approach in the first album, whereas we now have more personal, down to earth subjects. With things that the each band member or different band members went through ups and downs, humans, emotions of roller coaster, and the way we will continue with the world that we created. But I think that’s going to be something for the third album because we just started writing songs because we wanted without a big vision in the beginning, because we didn’t know how it will go on. And then once we started negotiating with Napalm, it was kind of clear, we will make another full length album. And then, like, everything fell into place and we had to really work on the last few songs to actually make a whole album. So as I said, it’s more like a compilation. So that’s a big difference to the first one.
5. What’s song on this album that represents you the most ?
Oh, that’s a difficult one. It’s hard to choose. I think, Elegy probably is a good one. Elegy really has a little bit of the heaviness. It has the melody and the chorus, the catchy one. It has some prog aspects. It has wonderful like soundscapes of Miriam. I think it really combines everything. But yeah, this album is really quite versatile, I would say. And this is kind of what we want in this band. We want this to be a a playground where we can just be creative. It’s our like emotional catharsis where we just get out with it and without thinking in a box or with borders. That’s the essence of our band. It’s a little bit hard to choose, because I think in the end, even a song like hummingbird is totally for us, although it’s very versatile, I see everything as a representative part of our band because we really want all the different influences of the different band members to have space in this project and just have fun with it and not thinking in this box or category.
6. You just put a bit of like all of yourself into each songs to make this album ?
Yeah, exactly. And like giving every idea a chance, let’s say. I have this piano ballad. It’s a very old one, it’s the last track. It’s a piano ballad in Swiss German. And that just really wanted to do something in Swiss German. And I wanted to use this piano ballad demo that I created in 2017. I think I was like, I just would be cool to have it on the album. And we made it work, although it really stands out from all the others because there is no other band really in it. But we want to give all these songs or these ideas a chance.
7. So Cloudreader looked like a melodic, melodramatic pop rock song who pushed you to think about meaning of life. Is this what it meant for ?
Yeah, I think it’s here to spread good energy. It is about the human emotion of kind of, understanding that we need to go through things, but still see the beautiful part in it. How everything can clear up when you go through it. I think it’s one of our light, brightest and lightest songs on the album, and we released it as a single, and I was a little bit skeptical, but apparently, I don’t know, people seem to like it, although it’s not as dark as other songs, or maybe as the metalheads would want it. Maybe but somehow we really got super good feedback. I think it’s maybe came through this message that we wanted to or these emotions. We wanted to awaken people, just a peaceful, light feeling and somehow, I think seemed to work with quite some people and that’s good.
8. Verliebt is featuring with Coen Janssen from Epica, how did you manage to get him on this project ?
Jonas and me were also playing and singing in Eluveitie. So we got to know the Epica people, you know, from festivals, from certain shows we play together. And When when we were listening to this piano demo, we were actually all in the mountains, for like a week, the whole band, just to really finalize everything before going to the studio and pretty much we were just thinking that it would be great to have a pianist there to bring his own little touch and his own magic to the song still. Of course, we were thinking about Koen Jansen because we knew him, because he’s such a nice guy, such a talented guy. And also the album is mixed and mastered by Yost Vandenbroucke, so he’s also from the Netherlands. And, Kuhn knows Yost really well, so it just kind of fit it so well. And although it was on a short notice and quite a tight time schedule, he made it work. And I think he really brought this his magic to the song that really completed it.
9. So what could you say to someone who doesn’t know Illumishade to make them want to discover you ?
If you’re looking for a wide range of music, like from a piano ballad, string orchestras, rock ballads to heavy, dark, metal melodic songs with a little bit of prog in it as well. Then go and listen.
10. In all of your discography, what is your favorite song to perform and why ?
I have to say, I really enjoy performing enemy. We just started now actually getting into the routine of playing our sets several times because we only played, I think, 11 shows before this tour. Overall, you know, like throughout the years. So now it was the first time we actually play, five days in a row, the same set and get into it. So, that’s really cool. And I could feel I like actually all of the songs, I don’t know, I’m looking forward to every new songs. That is like, next one is next one next, I like it. But, I think enemy is cool because it has this heaviness to it, but a very melodic chorus and some nice prog aspects on. I like this one.
11. Are you excited to play the new album on stage ?
Yes we will have album release shows. Two in Switzerland In March. Really looking forward to that actually. That’s going to be cool. We were actually just talking about which songs we are going to play and which not. We also have our friends from AD Infinitum and Lyrre joining us and Voice Of Ruin. So that’s going to be cool.

We’re super excited to now finally get it rolling with all concerts that are ahead and looking forward to come to North America, come to France.
