[ENGLISH BELOW] Il a suffit d’une annonce d’une concert de Mod Sun en headliner en salle (la seule de sa tournée EU) pour me motiver à prendre mes billets d’avion pour Eindhoven aux Pays-Bas. Après un périple de quelques heures, on arrive donc à la Dynamo pour une soirée de folie avec le chanteur mais également avec LØLØ et les locaux de Jetlag Jenny.
Le groupe local Jetlag Jenny devait initialement commencer son set à 19h30 mais l’alarme de la salle se déclenche pile à cette heure-ci (pas d’évacuation et rien de dangereux à signaler sûrement un problème technique) empêchant donc le groupe d’investir la scène. C’est donc avec une bonne demi-heure de retard que la formation va monter sur scène pour interpréter 7 titres. Jetlag Jenny étant une totale découverte pour moi je vais donc me focaliser uniquement sur la performance scénique! Les morceaux sont bien exécutés, du pop-punk/punk-rock très efficace et les 4 gars prennent vraiment un grand plaisir à jouer malgré une sangle de guitare qui lâche en plein set, ils ne se démontent pas et jouent devant un public dont certains ont apparemment l’habitude de les voir en live. Le chanteur prendra la parole plusieurs fois d’ailleurs pour dire notamment que c’est un grand fan de Mod Sun et qu’il est super content de faire sa première partie ou encore pour savoir combien de personnes les ont déjà vus auparavant. Bref une découverte plutôt sympathique à qui je souhaite tout le meilleur pour la suite.
LØLØ a été annoncée la veille du concert et ce fut une belle surprise! Connaissant la chanteuse pour son featuring avec girlfriends, il me tardait de découvrir ses morceaux en live. Le premier rang est d’ailleurs presque uniquement composé de ses fans, certains ayant fait le déplacement expressément pour la voir. Les morceaux sont vraiment incroyables en live, la performance de la chanteuse est simple mais très efficace, elle communique énormément avec le public et c’est vraiment appréciable notamment pour faire un brin d’humour concernant sa tenue du soir. Le Highlight de ce set est évidemment sa cover du classique de Wheatus, Teenage Dirtbag, repris en choeur par la fosse pendant que son guitariste se livre à un véritable one-man show avec sa perruque blonde. LØLØ finit par s’emparer d’une guitare pour jouer 2 morceaux (hot girls in hell et junkie). La musicienne fait également quelques bons mots sur sa copine Maggie Lindemann avec laquelle elle interprète debbie downer, elle évoque également le sujet de la santé mentale avant le dernier morceau boohoo. Un super set qu’il me tarde de découvrir en France dès que l’occasion se présentera. Les fans pourront d’ailleurs la retrouver à la fin de la soirée au merchandising pour des photos et des dédicaces.
Après l’avoir vu sur scène au Slamdunk South 2022 et à Londres quelques jours (et avant le Hellfest vendredi), je retrouve donc Mod Sun à Eindhoven pour un set de fou! Le chanteur va directement commencer avec mon morceau préféré à savoir Bones, le public ne fait qu’un avec lui et donne tout comme le groupe présent sur scène. La set-list est tout bonnement parfaite (et je déplorerais bien sûr le temps de jeu au Hellfest tant il va manquer certains titres), après Annoying, Stay Away< (initialement en duo avec son meilleur ami au monde *c’est lui qui le dit* Machine Gun Kelly), Courtney Fucked Kurt qui verra le premier mosh-pit de la soirée se former, arrive un nouveau morceau Strangers interprété pour la première fois en salle et assez différent de ce que l’artiste a pu proposer sur ces deux derniers albums. La classique Karma et sa cover incroyable de Iris des Goo Goo Dolls s’enchaînent parfaitement (et la larme à l’oeil aussi). Un speech assez touchant là aussi sur la santé mentale et les comportements à addictions permet de lancer Perfectly Imperfect avant d’avoir un morceau qui sera joué pour la TOUTE première fois en live à savoir Drive, un vrai moment d’émotion partagé. Le set se conclut avec Flames que je ne pensais jamais revoir en live (ceux qui ont suivis, vous sachez) mais le public réclame à corps et à cris un rappel et c’est donc sur Rich Kids Ruins Everything que le trio remonte sur scène pour un dernier moment de communion totale avec les fans. On retrouvera Derek à son stand de merch pour échanger quelques mots notamment sur les souvenirs de Londres de l’an dernier et malgré sa fatigue évidente, on peut constater que l’homme rayonne toujours autant et ne perds rien de son côté solaire!
Merci à la Dynamo (en particulier à Lynn) pour les accréditations mais aussi pour son accueil impeccable, c’est toujours un plaisir de voyager et d’arriver dans un lieu aussi cool!

All it took was an announcement that Mod Sun would be headlining an indoor concert (the only one on his EU tour) to motivate me to get my plane tickets for Eindhoven in the Netherlands. After a few hours on the road, we arrived at La Dynamo for a wild evening with the singer, LØLØ and local band Jetlag Jenny.
Local band Jetlag Jenny were initially due to start their set at 7.30pm, but the venue’s alarm went off at exactly the same time, preventing the band from taking to the stage. So it was half an hour late that the band took to the stage to perform 7 tracks. Jetlag Jenny were a complete discovery for me, so I’m going to focus on the live performance! The songs were well executed, very effective pop-punk/punk-rock and the 4 guys really enjoyed playing despite a guitar strap that broke in the middle of their set. They didn’t give up and played in front of an audience some of whom were apparently used to seeing them live. The singer took the floor several times to say that he was a big fan of Mod Sun and that he was really happy to be supporting him, or to ask how many people had seen them before. All in all, a very pleasant discovery, and I wish them all the best for the future.
LØLØ was announced the day before the concert and it was a nice surprise! Knowing the singer from her featuring with girlfriends, I couldn’t wait to discover her songs live. In fact, the front row was almost entirely made up of her fans, some of whom had made the trip expressly to see her. The songs are truly incredible live, and the singer’s performance is simple but highly effective. She communicates a great deal with the audience, which is really appreciated, especially when it comes to a bit of humour about her outfit for the evening. The highlight of the set was obviously her cover of the Wheatus classic Teenage Dirtbag, which the crowd sang along to while her guitarist put on a real one-man show with his blonde wig. LØLØ ended up picking up a guitar to play 2 songs (hot girls in hell and junkie). The musician also had a few good words to say about her friend Maggie Lindemann, with whom she plays debbie downer, and she also touched on the subject of mental health before the final track boohoo. A great set that I can’t wait to see in France as soon as I get the chance. Fans will be able to meet her in the merchandising area at the end of the evening for photos and autographs.

The singer kicked things off with my favourite track, Bones, and the crowd became one with him, giving it their all just like the band on stage. After Annoying, Stay Away (initially a feat with his best friend in the world Machine Gun Kelly), Courtney Fucked Kurt, which saw the first mosh-pit of the evening form, came a new track Strangers, performed for the first time in a concert hall and quite different from what the artist has been able to offer on his last two albums. The classic Karma and his incredible cover of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls followed perfectly (and brought a tear to the eye too). A touching speech about mental health and addictive behaviours kicks off Perfectly Imperfect before a song that will be played live for the VERY first time, Drive, a real moment of shared emotion. The set concludes with Flames, which I never thought I’d see live again, but the crowd are clamouring for an encore, so it’s Rich Kids Ruins Everything that sees the trio back on stage for a final moment of total communion with the fans. We caught up with Derek at his merch stand to chat about some memories of London last year, and despite his obvious tiredness, we could see that the man was still as radiant as ever and had lost none of his sunny side!
