New Years Day are back with a fifth album: Half Black Heart. The new album marks the return of the band’s original line-up, and will be available from 1 March via Century Media Records.
Ce nouvel album ouvre sur Vampyre et son ambiance étrange. Les instruments arrivent de manière virulente et ponctuée d’harmoniques. C’est avec l’arrivée du chant que les choses se calment, car il s’impose rapidement. On découvre un refrain qui éclate et qui attire l’attention directement. Une belle énergie découle de ce premier titre, même si on sent que les membres en gardent pour plus tard. On s’énerve un peu plus dans la dernière partie du titre et cela nous permet de nous mettre dans le bain pour la suite. Half Black Heart à une instrumentalité lourde et destructrice où seul le chant semble vouloir s’en libérer. On a une véritable confrontation entre les deux éléments et j’aime beaucoup le rendu. Un chant qui semble vouloir aller toujours plus loin, changeant pendant des laps de temps assez court, créant la surprise. Le refrain quant à lui, entre en tête dès la première écoute. Dès le début de Hurts Like Hell, les instruments éclatent et transmettent beaucoup d’énergie. C’est le chant qui vient changer les choses et un jeu se met rapidement en place, pour savoir qui aura la place mise en avant. Le refrain est entraînant et donne envie de le reprendre à tue-tête. On découvre quelques sonorités nouvelles mais le dynamisme reste le même. Un titre qui représente bien le groupe.
This new album opens with Vampyre and its strange atmosphere. The instruments arrive virulently, punctuated by harmonics. It’s with the arrival of the vocals that things calm down, as they quickly assert themselves. The chorus bursts into life, grabbing your attention straight away. There’s a nice energy about this first track, even if you get the sense that the members are saving some for later. The last part of the track gets a little angrier, and gets us into the swing of things for the rest of the album. Half Black Heart has a heavy, destructive instrumentality where only the vocals seem to want to break free. There’s a real confrontation between the two elements and I really like the result. The vocals seem to want to go further and further, changing for fairly short periods of time, creating a surprise. The chorus, meanwhile, gets stuck in your head from the very first listen. Right from the start of Hurts Like Hell, the instruments explode with energy. It’s the vocals that change things, and a game is quickly set up to see who gets the spotlight. The chorus is catchy and makes you want to sing it at the top of your lungs. We discover some new sounds but the dynamism remains the same. A track that represents the band well.

L’ouverture de Secrets passe un cran de violence et le chant vient se coller à cette ambiance. Le refrain est la partie que j’ai le plus appréciée : il met en avant le chant, grave et profond, qui vient réveiller nos émotions. On découvre un chant différent et une instrumentalité qui nous pousse toujours plus dans cet univers. La fin du morceau est tout simplement impressionnante et grandiose. Fearless à une introduction plus douce, avec quelques touches électro. Elle s’éclipse pour laisser place au chant et l’ensemble diffère de ce que nous avons écouté jusqu’à maintenant. Une fois tous les membres réunis, ils nous proposent quelque chose d’explosif et de dynamique. J’aime beaucoup les deux ambiances qui composent ce morceau et qui mettent en avant toute la palette musicale du groupe. Bullet Proof ouvre sur des notes de piano, nous transportant dans une ambiance plus classique et solennel. On se concentre sur le chant, magnifiquement mis en avant et le tout semble plus intimiste. Le titre prend son temps et la batterie vient s’ajouter en douceur. Même si l’ensemble éclate un peu plus, on garde une certaine douceur, entraîné par un chant qui semble presque continu.
The opening of Secrets takes things up a notch in terms of violence, and the vocals match the atmosphere. The chorus is the part I enjoyed the most, bringing out the deep, gravelly vocals that awaken our emotions. The vocals are different and the instrumentals push you further and further into this world. The end of the track is simply impressive and grandiose. Fearless has a softer introduction, with a few electro touches. It fades out to make way for the vocals, and the whole thing is quite different from what we’ve heard so far. Once all the members are together, they come up with something explosive and dynamic. I really like the two moods that make up this track, which showcase the band’s full musical palette. Bullet Proof opens with piano notes, transporting us into a more classical and solemn atmosphere. The focus is on the vocals, magnificently brought to the fore, and the whole thing feels more intimate. The track takes its time and the drums are gently added. Even if the whole thing explodes a little more, there’s still a certain gentleness to it, carried along by vocals that seem almost continuous.
Burn It All Down débute avec le chant, accompagné d’une mélodie légère, le tout est assez entraînant. Les instruments ont des passages énervés, assez courts. Le tout est complété par un chant masculin, assez discret. La vraie puissance vient du refrain, qui est mené d’une main de maître. Enemy dévoile une instrumentalité qui donne envie de se déchaîner. L’ensemble se calme un peu avec l’arrivée du chant, avant d’aller vers un refrain grandissant et profond. On ajoute également quelques touches électro, donnant du peps à l’ensemble. Un morceau où on joue beaucoup avec les rythmes, donnant quelque chose de très complet. Avec I Believe, on découvre, une nouvelle fois, des instruments prêts à éclater dans tous les sens. Ici, le chant vient s’y mêler et le groupe avance de front. Tout va subitement s’arrêter et seule la voix va être mise en avant, les instruments présents en fond, attendent d’exploser à nouveau. On alterne avec deux rythmes et différents types de chant, on se prend facilement au jeu.
Burn It All Down begins with vocals, accompanied by a light melody, the whole quite catchy. The instruments have short, angry passages. The whole thing is rounded off by fairly discreet male vocals. The real power comes from the chorus, which is masterfully delivered. Enemy unveils an instrumental sound that makes you want to go wild. The whole thing calms down a little with the arrival of the vocals, before moving on to a deep, soaring chorus. There are also a few electro touches thrown in for good measure. It’s a track that plays a lot with rhythms, giving you something very complete. With I Believe, we once again discover instruments ready to explode in all directions. Here, the vocals get in the way and the band forge ahead. Suddenly everything comes to a halt and only the vocals come to the fore, the instruments in the background waiting to explode again. Alternating between two rhythms and different types of vocals, it’s easy to get carried away.

Unbreak My Heart est le second titre qui ouvre avec un piano. Le chant y est associé et le duo donne quelque chose de prenant et d’assez sombre, touchant directement nos émotions. On découvre une sorte de balade où les instruments montent tout en douceur, avant d’arriver à un changement radical, dans la dernière partie. Ça s’énerve, autant au niveau du chant que des instruments et le titre nous retourne complètement. So Sick débute avec le chant et des sonorités électro. Les instruments les rejoignent et tout explose, donnant une belle dose d’énergie à l’ensemble. Une nouvelle fois, le chant va venir calmer les choses et ce schéma fonctionne toujours aussi bien. Mais, j’ai trouvé ce titre un peu trop linéaire, malgré un refrain qui secoue le tout et une fin assez énergique. Creature Of Habit vient conclure cet album. L’introduction est assez ambiante et on ne sait pas vers où on va se tourner. Un autre chant semble se mélanger, alors que les instruments montent petit à petit, jusqu’à ce que les deux éléments soient au même niveau. Une nouvelle fois, on avance de front, toujours plus fort. Les instruments nous proposent de courts passages intenses et qui renforcent le côté grandiose du titre. Un morceau qui clôture parfaitement ce nouvel album.
Unbreak My Heart is the second track, opening with a piano. The vocals join in, and the duo produce something gripping and quite dark, touching our emotions directly. It’s a sort of ballad where the instruments build gently, before coming to a radical change in the final section. The vocals and instruments get really angry, and the track takes us completely by surprise. So Sick begins with vocals and electro sounds. The instruments join in and everything explodes, giving the whole thing a great dose of energy. Once again, the vocals calm things down, and this pattern works just as well as ever. But I found this track a little too linear, despite a chorus that shakes things up and a fairly energetic ending. Creature Of Habit brings the album to a close. The introduction is rather ambient and you don’t know where you’re going to end up. Another vocal seems to blend in, while the instruments gradually build until the two elements are on the same level. Once again, we move forward head-on, ever louder. The instruments deliver short, intense passages that reinforce the track’s grandiose feel. A perfect closing track for this new album.
