[ENGLISH BELOW] Le groupe Folterkammer a sorti son deuxième album, Weibermacht , le vendredi 19 avril via leur nouveau label, Century Media Records. Un peu d’histoire concernant le groupe, il a été fondé en 2018/2019 et est composé de Andromeda Anarchia au chant, Zachary Ezrin à la guitare, Darren Hanson à la guitare, Laurent David à la basse et Brendan McGowan à la batterie. Certains auront bien évidemment noté la présence dans le line-up d’un membre de Imperial Triumphant en la personne du guitariste Zachary mais les deux formations sont intrinsèquement liés, Andromeda étant apparue sur les trois derniers albums de Imperial tout comme Brendan et Darren a également participé à l’écriture du morceau Scaphism en 2012, tout est lié donc comme dirait l’autre! Folterkammer évolue également dans un univers très lié au BDSM, la chanteuse ayant évoqué le premier album comme dépeignant « une déesse vicieuse, un très mauvaise Dom » mais pour ce deuxième opus, Andromeda a voulu créer un « personnage féminin, une bonne Dom pas abusive mais responsable », tout un programme en soit.
C’est le single Anno Domina qui va ouvrir Weibermacht, une parfaite introduction dans la musique du groupe. Une partie instrumentale très Black Metal le tout accompagnée par la voix lyrique mais qui sait également se montrer plus sombre, plus Raw, plus Metal si on va par-là avant de laisser place à un « break » baroque au clavecin interrompu par le claquement d’un fouet avant de repartir dans la noirceur la plus totale. La totalité de l’album est interprété en allemand c’est donc avec Leck Mich! qu’on va poursuivre l’écoute de cet opus, plus inquiétant dans son ambiance que le titre précédent et avec des influences plus Old-School tout en gardant un côté majestueux voir presque théâtral avec la choix de la chanteuse qui tout en gardant son chant d’opéra y mêle un chant presque grogné. Die Unterwerfung nous autorise un moment de répit avec son introduction très calme où on retrouve la voix parlée de Andromeda avant que la déferlante de Blast-Beast de Brendan ne s’abatte à nouveau sur l’auditeur. Le morceau va nous laisser sur la voix claire avant Kuess mir die Fuesse et ses bruits de talons en ouverture, qui laisse présager que ce morceau va traiter d’un certain Fetish et c’est bien évidemment le cas! La voix de Andromeda va parfois faire penser à celui d’une sorcière ou d’une banshee avant de revenir sur quelque chose de presque pur avec sa voix claire. L’ambiance est pesante, un brin mélancolique mais aussi très mystérieuse, Folterkammer manie ce genre de sonorités à la perfection tout en lui laissant un côté toujours très majestueux. Le final du morceau se fait avec le même son de talons qui claquent sur le sol comme si la Domina quittait son donjon après une séance.
La Banshee sera de retour sur Algolagnia, la chanteuse nous délivrant un chant totalement possédé sur une rythmique lourde et pesante. Littéralement le genre de morceaux qui collera des frissons de plaisir aux amateurs du genre. Un très court moment mélodique pour introduire Das Peitschengedicht qui restera dans la lignée des précédentes compositions avant Venus In Furs, une reprise de The Velvet Underground, une étonnante bonne surprise, Folterkammer s’est très bien appropriée cette chanson tout en gardant des petites touches psychédéliques.
Folterkammer n’est assurément pas le genre de groupe qui plaira à tout le monde. Evoluant dans un univers particulier mêlant l’Opéra/le Baroque et le Black Metal, la formation a su créer un univers singulier mais tout de même très intéressant.

[ENGLISH VERSION] Folterkammer released their second album, Weibermacht , on Friday April 19 via their new label, Century Media Records. A little history about the band, it was founded in 2018/2019 and consists of Andromeda Anarchia on vocals, Zachary Ezrin on guitar, Darren Hanson on guitar, Laurent David on bass and Brendan McGowan on drums. Of course, some of you will have noticed the presence in the line-up of a member of Imperial Triumphant in the person of guitarist Zachary, but the two bands are intrinsically linked, Andromeda having appeared on the last three Imperial albums as did Brendan, and Darren having also taken part in the writing of the track Scaphism in 2012, so it’s all connected! Folterkammer also evolves in a universe very much linked to BDSM, the singer having referred to the first album as depicting « a vicious goddess, a very bad Dom » but for this second opus, Andromeda wanted to create a « feminine character, a good Dom not abusive but responsible », quite a program in itself.
Weibermacht opens with the single Anno Domina, a perfect introduction to the band’s music. A very Black Metal instrumental part, accompanied by lyrical vocals, but which also knows how to be darker, more Raw, more Metal if you like, before giving way to a baroque harpsichord « break » interrupted by the cracking of a whip, before returning to total darkness. The whole album is performed in German, so we’ll continue listening to this opus with Leck Mich! more disquieting in its ambience than the previous track, and with more Old-School influences, while retaining a majestic, almost theatrical feel with the choice of the singer, who mixes her operatic vocals with an almost growled croon. Die Unterwerfung gives us a moment’s respite with its very calm introduction featuring Andromeda‘s spoken voice, before Brendan‘s Blast-Beast surges through the listener once more. The track leaves us on clear vocals before Kuess mir die Fuesse and its opening heel-clicking, which hints that this track is going to be about a certain Fetish, and of course it is! Andromeda‘s voice is at times reminiscent of that of a witch or banshee, before returning to something almost pure with her clear voice. The atmosphere is heavy, a touch melancholy but also very mysterious, Folterkammer handling this kind of sound to perfection while still leaving it a very majestic side. The track ends with the same sound of heels clicking on the floor as if the Domina were leaving her dungeon after a séance.
The Banshee returns on Algolagnia, the singer delivering a totally possessed vocal over a heavy, ponderous rhythm. Literally the kind of track that will send shivers of pleasure down the spines of fans of the genre. A very brief melodic moment introduces Das Peitschengedicht, which remains in the same vein as previous compositions before Venus In Furs, a cover of The Velvet Underground – a surprisingly good surprise, as Folterkammer have appropriated this song very well, while retaining small psychedelic touches.
Folterkammer are certainly not the kind of band that will appeal to everyone. Evolving in a peculiar universe blending opera/baroque and black metal, the band has created a singular yet very interesting universe.
