Le groupe de rock américain Makari (entre autres avec Andy Cizek de Monuments et Termina) est de retour avec un nouvel album. Ce deuxième opus s’intitule Wave Machine et fait suite à Hyperreal (2018) et est disponible depuis le 8 mars.
Ce nouvel album débute tout en douceur avec Eternity Leave. Il y a une ambiance assez plage et océan qui fait du bien au moral et qui aide à créer ce côté assez chill. L’ensemble se calme quelque peu avec l’arrivée du chant, qui se veut envoûtant. Le refrain nous apporte une belle énergie et un rythme légèrement plus rapide, tout en restant vite en tête. La dernière partie met surtout en avant les instruments et crée une nouvelle dimension plus présente et qui nous transporte totalement. Un premier titre qui nous met parfaitement dans le bain et promet de belles choses pour la suite de l’écoute. Contigo nous dévoile une instrumentalité plus profonde et qui tape un peu plus. Le chant arrive et va calmer quelque peu le tout. Le rythme va changer plusieurs fois, entre passages plus lents et pics énergétiques, le tout accompagné de quelques effets au niveau du chant. L’ajout de chants d’oiseaux a été une vraie surprise et trouve parfaitement sa place dans ce morceau très doux. Une nouvelle fois, les instruments clôturent en beauté ce titre. Gold Palace Kingdom nous donne le sentiment de se réveiller tout en douceur. C’est l’arrivée du chant qui donne le rythme et qui appuie ce sentiment de planer. Il faut attendre d’arriver au refrain pour que l’ensemble cherche un peu plus et redouble d’énergie. La voix est mise en avant tout du long et cela va créer, à certains moments, des passages plus intimes et porteurs d’espoirs. La deuxième partie va permettre aux instruments de se lâcher et de nous montrer ce dont ils sont capables.

Closer a une introduction assez planante et qui sent surtout super bon l’été ! On a une belle énergie, notamment au niveau de la guitare et on se prend vite au jeu. Cette dernière a droit à un solo, où le chant va venir s’entremêler et créer quelque chose d’assez fort. Quelques ralentissements dans le rythme qui permettent de repartir au mieux et on conserve cette ambiance douce, qui fait du bien. Breakers ouvre sur la guitare, qui met en avant ses plus beaux effets. Elle est vite rejointe par la batterie et plus tardivement par le chant et les autres instruments. On joue sur les rythmes et sur l’effacement des instruments pour mettre en avant le chant. J’aime beaucoup l’alternance de rythme, qui donne le sourire et le chant qui est toujours plus envoûtant. On clôture avec un solo de guitare profond et beau. Cheers (To The End) entre en douceur, notamment avec les chœurs. Après un bel effet à la guitare, c’est le chant qui arrive et qui donne un rythme plus rapide. Les instruments suivent et s’emballent un peu plus. J’aime beaucoup le rythme ici, qui reste assez rapide et qui change seulement vers la fin du morceau. On découvre alors quelque chose de plus doux, avec un chant presque comme un murmure et des instruments qui nous transportent.
Deteriorate ouvre sur une batterie dynamique, avant d’être rejointe par les autres instruments. Le chant vient s’y mêler et monte petit à petit, créant une belle profondeur. On se prend cette rafale d’énergie et de bonne humeur de pleine face et on se prend forcément au jeu. La dernière partie se voit prendre une autre direction, avec la batterie qui continue de dynamiser le tout. Soulstealer s’impose avec son chant plus fort et qui va toucher aux sentiments. Le rythme reste sur l’idée chill que l’on conserve depuis le début de notre écoute mais accélère quand même les choses. Soulstealer est certainement mon titre préféré, dès ma première écoute, il m’a marqué et m’a donné envie d’y revenir dès son écoute terminée. Le refrain est grandiose et profond et nous conduit vers une dernière partie plus intime, composée d’un solo de guitare et du chant. Tidal Wave on change quelque chose mais on garde cette ambiance dynamique. On ajoute un côté aérien et des passages instrumentaux plus beaux les uns que les autres. Le refrain entre rapidement en tête, tout comme le titre qui semble défiler à vitesse folle !

Smoke débute avec une guitare assez timide et une ambiance plus intimiste. Le chant vient se poser dessus et renforce cette idée. Il faut attendre quelque peu pour que le titre devienne plus rythmé et l’apparition de chœurs, donnant une belle profondeur. Un morceau où on joue sur le rythme et où le chant nous propose une belle palette. And Now We Sleep In Endless Ocean vient clôturer cet album et nous offre un dernier titre tout en douceur. On prend notre temps et on a le sentiment d’entrer dans une petite bulle où rien ne peut nous atteindre. Tout s’éteint tranquillement et termine ce magnifique voyage auditif aux côtés des membres du groupe.
Makari nous livre un deuxième album à leur image. L’écoute nous procure du réconfort et de la bonne humeur, avec des titres simples mais dynamiques !

The new album gets off to a gentle start with Eternity Leave. There’s a beachy, oceanic feel to it, which is good for morale and helps to create a chill vibe. Things calm down a little with the arrival of the haunting vocals. The chorus brings a nice energy and a slightly faster rhythm, while remaining quickly in the head. The final section focuses on the instruments, creating a new, more present dimension that’s totally transporting. A first track that gets us right into the swing of things and promises great things for the rest of the listening experience. Contigo‘s instrumental sound is deeper and a little more hard-hitting. The vocals come in and calm things down a bit. The rhythm changes several times, between slower passages and energetic peaks, all accompanied by a few vocal effects. The addition of birdsong was a real surprise, and fits perfectly into this very gentle track. Once again, the instruments bring the track to a beautiful close. Gold Palace Kingdom is a gentle wake-up call. It’s the arrival of the vocals that sets the pace and supports the feeling of floating. It’s not until you get to the chorus that the whole thing gets a bit more energetic. The vocals come to the fore throughout, and at certain points they create more intimate passages that are full of hope. The second half allows the instruments to let loose and show us what they can do.
Closer has a soaring introduction that smells of summer! The energy is great, especially on the guitar, and it doesn’t take long to get into the swing of things. The guitar gets a solo, where the vocals intermingle to create something quite strong. The rhythm slows down a little, allowing the song to get back on track and maintain its gentle, feel-good ambience. Breakers opens with the guitar showcasing its finest effects. It’s quickly joined by the drums and later by the vocals and other instruments. We play with the rhythms and the fading of the instruments to bring the vocals to the fore. I really like the alternation between the rhythm, which puts a smile on your face, and the vocals, which are ever more haunting. The album closes with a deep and beautiful guitar solo. Cheers (To The End) gets off to a gentle start, particularly with the backing vocals. After a beautiful guitar effect, the vocals come in and set the pace. The instruments follow and get a little more excited. I really like the rhythm here, which remains fairly fast and only changes towards the end of the track. Then we discover something softer, with a vocal that’s almost like a whisper and instruments that transport us.
Deteriorate opens with dynamic drums, before being joined by the other instruments. The vocals blend in and gradually build up, creating a beautiful depth. This gust of energy and good humour hits you in the face, and you’re bound to get carried away. The last part takes a different direction, with the drums continuing to energise the whole. Soulstealer comes into its own with stronger vocals that get to the heart of the matter. The rhythm stays with the chill idea we’ve had since we started listening, but speeds things up all the same. Soulstealer is undoubtedly my favourite track, making an impression on me from the very first listen and leaving me wanting to come back to it as soon as it was finished. The chorus is grandiose and profound, leading us into a more intimate final section featuring a guitar solo and vocals. In Tidal Wave we’ve changed a few things, but we’ve kept the dynamic atmosphere. We’ve added an airy feel and instrumental passages, each more beautiful than the last. The chorus quickly gets into your head, as does the track, which seems to fly by at breakneck speed!
Smoke begins with a rather timid guitar and a more intimate atmosphere. The vocals build on this, reinforcing the idea. You have to wait a while for the track to become more rhythmic, with the choirs adding a nice depth. It’s a track where the rhythm is played with and the vocals offer a beautiful palette. And Now We Sleep In Endless Ocean brings the album to a close with a final, gentle track. We take our time and feel as if we’ve entered a little bubble where nothing can touch us. Everything quietly fades away and ends this magnificent auditory journey alongside the members of the band.
Makari deliver a second album in their own image. It’s a comforting, good-humoured listen, with simple but dynamic tracks!
