Après avoir joué à Lyon, le groupe emblématique Judas Priest était de retour à Paris au Zénith lundi dernier accompagné de Saxon. Retour sur la dernière date de leur tournée européenne.
SAXON
Saxon nous ont offert un show d’une heure, commençant avec Hell, Fire And Damnation issu de leur dernier album éponyme. La salle était quasi comble et l’audience était d’entrée de jeu en feu. Tout le monde sautait, tapait dans ses mains et chantait ; vraiment une super ambiance !
Le son de Saxon était puissant, surtout celui de la grosse caisse qui était vraiment écrasant. Le light show était également superbe, avec notamment des douches de lumières sur Brian Tatler (guitare) et Doug Scarratt (guitare) lorsqu’ils jouaient des solos, ou encore des effets de flamme créés avec une combinaison de lumière rouge et de fumée sur Sacrifice.
Après avoir joué plusieurs morceaux tels que Motorcycle Man et And the Bands Played On, Saxon nous ont présenté Madame Guillotine, une autre nouvelle chanson qui a été un plaisir à écouter en live. Un morceau groovy avec un riff catchy qui reste dans la tête, ainsi qu’un super solo !Le public était fou lors de Heavy Metal Thunder et scandait les paroles du refrain.
Biff Byford (chant) a ensuite offert la possibilité de choisir entre Crusader, Dallas 1 PM, Strong Arm Of The Law, et Broken Heroes, demandant au public de faire du bruit pour le morceau qu’il préférait. Il a même déchiré la setlist. Mais au final, le groupe a joué toutes les musiques proposées à l’exception de Broken Heroes.Après Denim and Leather, tout le monde dans la salle s’est levé pour Wheel Of Steel et Byford a demandé à l’audience de taper dans ses mains. La salle entière était en surchauffe et l’énergie était palpable.
Saxon ont terminé le concert avec leur morceau le plus populaire, Princess Of The Night de 1981. Le groupe aura joué beaucoup de classiques mélangés à des chansons plus récentes, nous offrant ainsi une super performance !
« We’ll see you at fucking Hellfest ! » a déclaré Byford avant de quitter la scène. En effet, Saxon seront de retour en France le 29 juin pour le Hellfest à Clisson.

21h, il était l’heure de retrouver Judas Priest. Le grand drapeau qui était accroché sur scène fut alors aspiré pour laisser le groupe apparaître. Ils ont commencé d’emblée avec le puissant Panic Attack issu du nouvel album Invicible Shield. On ne peut pas passer à côté de l’aura de Rob Halford (chant). Le Metal God possède une présence scénique incroyable et illuminait littéralement la scène entière de sa veste brillante. Il nous a d’ailleurs montré sa vaste collection durant tout le concert, se changeant presqu’à chaque chanson. Vestes argentées, dorées, manteau denim long façon battle jacket, sans bien sûr oublier les vestes en cuir !
Le light show était sublime et la scène dantesque. Des écrans géants diffusaient des visuels pour chacune des musiques, et une immense structure représentant le symbole du groupe était suspendue au plafond et montait et descendait.
Après You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ et Rapid Fire, le groupe a surpris tout le monde en jouant Breaking The Law de nulle part. On aurait pensé entendre le morceau plus loin dans la setlist. Le public est devenu complétement survolté au moment où il a entendu l’iconique riff. On pouvait vraiment ressentir l’énergie qui émanait de la salle.
Après avoir notamment joué Love Bites, Turbo Lover, ou encore la reprise de Fleetwood Mac The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown), et avoir fait quelques vocalises avec Rob Halford, c’était au tour de Scott Travis (batterie) de prendre la parole. Il a alors dit qu’un invité très spécial serait de la partie un peu plus tard si la salle faisait assez de bruit à son goût. Il a également demandé au public quelle chanson il souhait entendre, et dès que celui-ci a hurlé Painkiller, l’emblématique intro de batterie a retenti.
Rob Halford est clairement toujours en forme, atteignant toutes les notes les plus aigues de la chanson. Le public était en feu, secouant la tête, et hurlant les paroles du morceau, le tout les poings en l’air.
Après Electric Eye et son célèbre riff chanté par la salle entière, Halford a fait retentir son moteur et est revenu sur scène au volant de sa mythique Harley-Davidson, et c’est dans un nuage de fumée que le groupe a commencé à jouer Hell Bent For Leather.
L’invité spécial mentionné plus tôt était en fait Glenn Tipton (guitare), qui a rejoint le groupe pour jouer les deux derniers morceaux (Metal Gods et Living After Midnight). Il a reçu une standing ovation amplement méritée lorsqu’il est arrivé sur scène, aidé par Halford. Tipton ne peut malheureusement plus tourner à cause de la maladie de Parkinson et il avait l’air heureux de jouer sur scène même s’il semblait fatigué.
Judas Priest nous a offert un show de quasi deux heures et ont joué une setlist très variée avec des morceaux de onze de leurs albums. Seulement trois musiques ont représenté le nouvel album Invicible Shield (Panic Attack, Crown OF Horns, et le morceau éponyme), mais avec une carrière aussi longue et autant de classiques, il est difficile de pouvoir en jouer davantage. Il aurait été cependant sympathique de pouvoir entendre un peu plus de l’album en live, ainsi que d’autres morceaux de Painkiller.
Le concert fut néanmoins brillant, et l’ambiance était au rendez-vous !
Judas Priest seront de retour en France le 23 juin pour le festival Heavy Weekend à Nancy, aux côtés d’Alice Cooper, Tom Morello et Ayron Jones.

After playing a show in Lyon, the legendary band Judas Priest was back in Paris last Monday, supported by Saxon. It was the last date of their european tour.
SAXON
Saxon offered us a 1 hour long show, starting with Hell, Fire And Damnation, from their latest and eponymous record. The venue was almost full and the audience was right away on fire. Everyone was jumping, clapping their hands and singing ; truly a great atmosphere !
Saxon‘s sound was huge, especially the kick drum, which was crushing. The lighting was also excellent, notably with showers of light on Brian Tatler (guitar) and Doug Scarratt (guitar) when they were soloing, or some cool flame-like effects made with a combinaison of red light and smoke on Sacrifice.
After playing a few songs like Motorcycle Man or And the Bands Played On, Saxon introduced us to Madame Guillotine, another new song which was a pleasure to hear live. A groovy track with a catchy riff that gets stuck in your head, and a super cool solo !
People went crazy on Heavy Metal Thunder, chanting the words of the chorus.
Biff Byford (singer) then offered the crowd a choice between Crusader, Dallas 1 PM, Strong Arm Of The Law, and Broken Heroes, asking them to cheer for the one they prefered. He even ripped the setlist apart. But the band ended up playing them all except for Broken Heroes.
After Denim and Leather, everyone in the venue stood up for Wheel Of Steel and Byford asked the audience to clap their hands. The whole venue was having fun and the energy was palpable.
Saxon ended the show with their most popular track, Princess Of The Night from 1981.
They played plenty of classics, mixed with their most recent work and gave a great performance !
« We’ll see you at fucking Hellfest ! » said Byford before leaving the stage. Indeed, Saxon will return to France on the 29th of June in Hellfest, Clisson.

9pm, time for Judas Priest to kick off. The huge flag set on stage, is sucked in as the band appears on stage. They started right away with the powerful Panic Attack from their new album Invncible Shield. We can’t help but notice Rob Halford‘s (singer) aura. The Metal God has an incredible stage presence that can’t be denied. He was literally illuminating the whole stage with his shiny jacket. Throughout the set he showed us his large collection of jackets, wearing a different one on almost every song. Silver, gold, denim battle-coat, without of course omitting leather jackets !
The lighting was on point and the stage set was Dantean. Giant screens were casting very cool visuals and a huge structure in the shape of the band’s symbol was hanging from the ceiling and going up and down.
After You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ and Rapid Fire, the band surprised everyone by playing Breaking The Law out of nowhere. You would’ve expected it to be later in the set. People went completely insane as soon as they heard the iconic riff. You could really feel the energy emanating from the audience.
After notably playing Love Bites, Turbo Lover, or the Fleetwood Mac cover The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown), and doing some vocal exercises with Rob Halford, it was Scott Travis‘ (drums) turn to take the mic. He said that a very special guest would be joining a bit later if the crowd made enough noise to his liking. He then asked the audience what song they wanted to hear and as soon as the crowd screamed Painkiller, the famous drum intro blasted out the room.
Rob Halford definitely still got it, nailing every high note of the song. The crowd was on fire, banging their heads, fists up in the air, and screaming the words of the track.
After Electric Eye and its emblematic riff sang by the whole audience, Halford made his engine roar, and rode his legendary Harley-Davidson on stage. And in a cloud of smoke the band started playing Hell Bent For Leather.
The very special guest Glenn Tipton (guitar) joined the band to play the last 2 songs (Metal Gods and Living After Midnight). He received a well-deserved standing ovation when he walked on stage, helped by Halford. Tipton can’t tour anymore because of Parkinson’s disease and seemed very happy to be playing on stage despite looking tired.
Judas Priest offered us a 2 hour long show and played a very mixed setlist with songs from 11 of their albums. Only 3 were representing the new album Invicible Shield (Panic Attack, Crown OF Horns, and the eponymous track), but with a career that long and so much classics, it’s difficult to play more than that. Though it would’ve been nice to hear more songs from the album live and also more Painkiller tracks.
The show was nonetheless brilliant and it was truly a great night !
Judas Priest will be back in France on the 23rd of June for the Heavy Weekend festival taking place in Nancy, alongside Alice Cooper, Tom Morello, and Ayron Jones.
