[ENGLISH BELOW] Le premier album du groupe allemand Letters Sent Home intitulé Forever Undone sera disponible le 12 avril prochain via Sharptone Records. Après avoir sorti de nombreux singles tous assez prometteurs, le quartet composé de Emily Paschke (chant), Lara Ripke (basse), Robin Werner (guitare) et Louis Schramm (batterie) dévoile son premier album après avoir sorti deux EP en 2020 et 2021, tout les deux auto-produits!
Earthquake début ce nouvel album avec la voix samplée de Emily samplée de façon à avoir un rendu « radio vintage » suivent des riffs assez Metal plutôt surprenants quand on compare ce titre aux singles déjà sortis mais le tout est en parfaite adéquation avec la voix douce de la chanteuse. Le morceau reste plutôt Rock tout en mettant en avant les parties de basse de Lara. Le single Request Denied avec son instrumental plus orienté Pop-Punk donne comme un côté plus « solaire » au titre malgré le fait qu’il aborde le sujet de la santé mentale, Emily chante d’ailleurs dans le refrain « I wrote a thousand songs about depression but I’m still depressed.Sang a hundred lines about progression but I’m still a mess ». C’est le single récemment sorti Ignorance qui prend la suite, plus Rock avec une énergie renouvelée, c’est aussi la première collaboration sur ce premier album avec le chanteur de Dead Lakes, Sumner Peterson, un morceau d’actualité puisque Letters Sent Home se fait la voix de sa génération en effet le titre représente la frustration et l’impuissance des jeunes générations face à la crise climatique (« Trees are falling onto the streets and we only care about money »).
Ce qui va marquer le plus sur ce premier album, si vous ne connaissez pas le groupe, c’est vraiment la voix d’Emily, c’est pur, délicat et presque angélique même sur les morceaux avec du Scream notamment Pedestal où la chanteuse se voit rejointe par Chris Zuehike du groupe Half Me au chant plus Metalcore, un contraste saisissant mais tout autant intéressant. Elements ressemble presque à quelque chose que Evanescence aurait pu proposer un piano/voix avant que n’interviennent un côté plus moderne avec des sonorités Trap et ferait plus penser à du PVRIS même si le côté plus doux revient vite à la charge. Seven évoque clairement le thème de la religion qui revient d’ailleurs sur un autre titre de l’album, le morceau est Rock mais on retrouve des riffs plus lourds pour aller avec la violence des paroles ( « All the hatred that you’re spreading while you’re trying to preach love.It has led me to believe that there’s no lord above »).
Pour Sadists on retrouve le même genre de sonorités plus Trap déjà présentes sur Elements mais bien plus mises en avant qui donne un côté très dansant au titre. Le chant d’Emily change également un peu, on peut presque avoir l’impression qu’elle rappe sur ce morceau. Le single Final Battle revient sur le sujet de la religion, la chanteuse ayant apparemment été « enfermée » dans des croyances et une communauté toxique qui ne lui convenaient pas. Ce titre évoque sa fuite et le fait qu’elle aille de l’avant maintenant tout en sachant se défendre et s’exprimer face à ces gens-là :
« When I meet the end of the world
I’ll be proud of myself
for never giving into
your apathetic ways
When I fight the Final Battle
Destroy the Tower of Babel
I realize I escaped
a cult leaving black-and-blue’s »
Forever Undone se conclut sur la ballade « Rock » if i die first avec lequel on a pu découvrir Letters Sent Home il y’a quelques mois déjà. Une magnifique mais tout autant tragique chanson d’amour sur laquelle la chanteuse exprime le sentiment intense et destructeur d’aimer quelqu’un si intensément quelqu’un qu’on semble ne pas pouvoir vivre sans cette personne et qu’on préférerait mourir avant elle, la voix de Emily est gorgée d’émotions sur ce titre aussi sensible, la vocaliste semble vivre vraiment ce qu’elle exprime et on espère voir cette chanson en live lors de leur date à Paris fin mai.

I’m trying to get by but if you left I know it’d kill me
So, I hope I die first »
Forever Undone est un album puissant autant au niveau des thématiques abordées qu’au niveau des émotions dégagées par la voix de Emily Paschke, même si les autres membres du groupe ne sont évidemment pas en reste et mettent parfaitement en musique les morceaux de ce premier album. A suivre prochainement notamment pour une date à Paris le 30 mai prochain en support du groupe Honey Revenge.

After releasing a number of promising singles, the quartet made up of Emily Paschke (vocals), Lara Ripke (bass), Robin Werner (guitar) and Louis Schramm (drums) unveil their debut album after releasing two EPs in 2020 and 2021, both self-produced!
Earthquake kicks off the new album with Emily‘s vocals sampled to give it a vintage radio feel, followed by some rather surprising Metal riffs when compared with the singles already released, but the whole thing is a perfect match for the singer’s gentle voice. It’s a rock track, with Lara‘s bass playing to the fore. The single Request Denied, with its more pop-punk instrumental, gives the track a sunnier feel despite the fact that it tackles the subject of mental health, with Emily singing in the chorus « I wrote a thousand songs about depression but I’m still depressed.Sang a hundred lines about progression but I’m still a mess ». The recently-released single Ignorance follows on from this, with a more rock feel and renewed energy. It’s also the first collaboration on this debut album with Dead Lakes singer Sumner Peterson, a topical track since Letters Sent Home is the voice of their generation, representing the frustration and powerlessness of the younger generation in the face of the climate crisis (« Trees are falling onto the streets and we only care about money »).
If you’re unfamiliar with the band, what really stands out on this debut album is Emily‘s voice: pure, delicate and almost angelic, even on the scream tracks like Pedestal, where the singer is joined by Chris Zuehike from Half Me on more metalcore vocals, a striking but equally interesting contrast. Elements almost sounds like something Evanescence might have done with piano and vocals before a more modern Trap sound comes in, reminding us more of PVRIS, although the softer side soon returns. Seven clearly evokes the theme of religion, which recurs on another track on the album. The track is rock, but there are heavier riffs to match the violence of the lyrics (« All the hatred that you’re spreading while you’re trying to preach love.It has led me to believe that there’s no lord above »).
Sadists features the same kind of trap sounds already present on Elements, but with a much more prominent presence, giving the track a very danceable feel. Emily‘s vocals also change a little, and you almost get the impression that she’s rapping on this track. The single Final Battle returns to the subject of religion, the singer having apparently been « locked up » in beliefs and a toxic community that didn’t suit her. The track is about escaping and moving on now, but also about standing up for herself and speaking out against those people:

Forever Undone concludes with the ballad if i die first, which we heard on Letters Sent Home a few months ago. A magnificent but equally tragic love song on which the singer expresses the intense and destructive feeling of loving someone so intensely that you can’t seem to live without them and would rather die before they do, Emily‘s voice is bursting with emotion on this sensitive track, the vocalist seems to really live what she’s saying, and we hope to see this song live when they play in Paris at the end of May.

Forever Undone is a powerful album, both in terms of the themes it tackles and the emotions released by Emily Paschke‘s voice, although the other members of the band are obviously not to be outdone, setting the tracks on this debut album to perfection.
