Pour la sortie de leur nouvel album Loss, Mary a pu poser quelques questions au groupe de Deathcore, Osiah. [ENGLISH BELOW]
1/Salut, pour ceux qui ne vous connaissent pas, pouvez-vous présenter le groupe ?
Salut ! Nous sommes Osiah. Nous sommes un groupe de 5 musiciens de deathcore/deathmetal du nord de l’Angleterre.
2/ En 3 mots, comment décrirais-tu votre musique ?
Really Fucking Heavy
3/Votre troisième album « Loss » est sorti il y a peu de temps, dans quel état d’esprit avez-vous abordé cette sortie ?
Nous l’avons abordé avec l’état d’esprit que cette sortie était un peu différente des deux autres. Il a gardé certains des éléments des autres, mais il était beaucoup plus extrême. Plus technique, plus d’éléments death metal, plus de groove. Nous étions donc un peu sceptiques quant au fait que les gens ne l’aimeraient pas, mais nous savions que cela ouvrirait beaucoup de nouvelles portes. Donc, avec cela en tête, nous avons été très choqués et surpris qu’il ait été si bien reçu.
4/Comment s’est déroulé le travail de composition et d’enregistrement ? Et quels sont les thèmes abordés dans cet album ?
2020 a été une année difficile pour tout, je pense que cela nous a beaucoup inspiré pour écrire un album complet, cela nous a donné beaucoup de temps pour le faire haha. Pour ce qui est de l’écriture et de la composition des chansons… En général, Andy et Keepin écrivent chez eux, puis s’approchent ou annoncent dans le chat du groupe que nous avons une chanson. Noah obtiendra le midi de la batterie pour la chanson, puis renverra le midi et ensuite Roper viendra en dernier pour écrire les voix ou mettre des démos de voix sur les pistes, et nous continuerons à faire ce processus jusqu’à ce que nous ayons assez de chansons sous forme de démo pour être prêts à les enregistrer correctement. Ensuite, je m’arrange généralement pour que nous puissions tout enregistrer. Cette fois-ci, Carl (bassiste) et moi sommes allés à Londres pendant deux semaines pour enregistrer les guitares et les basses des versions démo de la batterie, lorsque les restrictions ont été levées. Heureusement qu’on a fait ça pendant ces deux semaines parce que je pense qu’après ça… les règles ont commencé à changer. Plus tard dans l’année, vers le mois d’octobre, Noah est venu à Newcastle et nous avons loué le studio principal aux In Heart Studios et nous avons enregistré toute la batterie finale en 4 jours. Roper enregistre sa démo et ses dernières prises vocales chez lui. Puis tout a été envoyé à Christian Donaldson pour qu’il le mixe !
En termes de thèmes lyriques, il y a beaucoup de références à la santé mentale, il y avait beaucoup de souffrance en 2020 et Roper a profité de cette occasion pour parler ouvertement des nombreuses pensées tortueuses qui l’ont tourmenté tout au long de l’enfermement, il a déguisé certaines d’entre elles en histoires, et d’autres, il les a carrément identifiées, cela a été difficile pour nos auditeurs qui ont traversé, et traversent encore, des situations similaires.
5/Comment est née l’idée des featurings avec Jason Evans et Ben Duerr ?
Ben était initialement prévu pour le premier album d’Osiah mais nous n’avons pas pu le faire à temps. Mais cette fois-ci, il était parfait pour la chanson « Eye of the Swarm ». En ce qui concerne Jason, Osiah est un bon ami d’Ingested et nous avons travaillé ensemble à plusieurs reprises par le passé. Nous savions que nous étions sur quelque chose de spécial lorsque nous avons écrit » Loss « , c’était donc un moment idéal pour inviter quelqu’un qui nous inspire autant à se joindre à nous pour notre travail le plus important à ce jour. Nous sommes très heureux qu’il ait accepté et qu’il ait donné à notre album le traitement spécial qu’il méritait.
6/ Comment voyez-vous l’évolution du groupe depuis ses débuts ?
Nous avons eu quelques changements de line-up, c’est certain, mais je pense que le line-up actuel a fait évoluer Osiah dans sa forme la plus forte. Nous sommes arrivés à un stade où nous n’avons plus à nous soucier d’abaisser les choses pour que les autres membres puissent suivre. Chacun a maîtrisé son art, ce qui joue un rôle très important dans un groupe.
7/Quels sont vos projets pour 2021 ?
Pour le reste de l’année 2021, nous avons quelques dates ponctuelles autour du Royaume-Uni, puis une tournée britannique complète à la fin de l’année avec Bound in Fear et Godeater. Puis pour 2022, nous espérons faire le tour des endroits où nous ne pouvons pas jouer à cause des restrictions de voyage comme l’Europe, l’Amérique etc…

Il y a beaucoup de choses dans nos playlists, allant du brutal death metal, au rap, puis à la pop, puis à la musique relaxante. Mais les groupes que nous avons appréciés dernièrement et qui ont un son similaire au nôtre sont :
Mental Cruelty, Humanity’s Last Breath, Assemble the Chariots, Ingested, Soreption, Cattle Decapitation et Godeater.

1/Hello, for those who don’t know you, can you introduce the band?
Hey there! We’re Osiah. We’re a 5 piece deathcore/deathmetal band from the North of UK.
2/In 3 words, how would you describe your music ?
Really Fucking Heavy
3/Your third album “Loss” was released a short time ago, in what state of mind did you approach this release?
We approached it with the mindset that this release was a bit different from the other two. It kept some of the elements from the others, but, it was a lot more extreme. More technical, more death metal elements, more groove. So we were a bit sceptical that people wouldn’t like it, but we knew it would open a lot of new doors. So, with that in mind, we were very shocked and surprised that it has been so well received.
4/How did the composition and recording work go? And what are the themes addressed in this album?
2020 was a hard year for everything, I feel like it did inspire us a lot to write a full album, it did give us a lot of time to do so haha. As for songwriting and composition… typically, Me(Andy) and Keepin will all write at our homes and then approach or put in the group chat that we have a song. Noah will get drum midi for the song, then send midi back and then Roper will come in last to write vocals or put demo vocals on tracks, and we’ll keep doing that process until we have enough songs in demo form to get ready to track them properly. Then I will usually arrange for when we’re going to record everything. This time around, me and Carl(bass player) went down to London for 2 weeks to track guitars and bass to demo versions of drums, when the lockdown restrictions were lifted. Luckily we did it in those two weeks because I think after then… the rules started to change. Later in the year around October time, Noah came to Newcastle and we hired the main studio out at In Heart Studios and tracked all the final drums in 4 days. Roper tracks his demo and his final vocal takes at his home. Then everything got sent to Christian Donaldson for him to mix!
In terms of lyrical themes there is a lot of referencing to mental health, there was a lot of suffering in 2020 and Roper used this opportunity to speak openly about the many tortuous thoughts that plagued him throughout the lockdown, some of these he disguised in story telling, and others he just outright identified them, this related hard to our listeners who were going through, and are still going through similar situations.
5/How did the idea of featurings with Jason Evans and Ben Duerr come about?
Ben was originally intended for Osiah’s first album but we just couldn’t make it work in time. But this time around he was a perfect fit for the song ‘Eye of the Swarm.’ In regards to Jason, Osiah are all good friends with Ingested and we have worked together in the past on many occasions, we knew we were onto something special when writing ‘Loss,’ so it was a just moment for us to invite someone so inspirational to us; to join us on our most important work to date. We are so glad he agreed and gave it that special treatment it deserved.
6/How do you see the evolution of the band since the beginning?
We have had a few line-up changes, for sure, but I think this current line up has now evolved Osiah at its strongest form. We’re at the stage now where we don’t have to worry about dumbing things down so other members can keep up. Everyone has mastered their craft which plays a very important part of being a band.
7/What are your projects for 2021?
For the rest of 2021 we have some one-off dates around the UK then a full UK tour at the end of the year with Bound in Fear and Godeater. Then for 2022, we’re hoping to hit up the places we can’t play due to travel restrictions like Europe, America etc…
