A l’occasion de la sortie de leur premier album, nous avons pu poser quelques questions à Britta (chanteuse) et Lukas (guitariste) du groupe Hiraes .

Salut, Peux- tu nous présenter le groupe ?
Britta : Oui bien sur ! Nous avons fondé Hiraes au début 2020. Nous jouons du Death Mélodique Metal mais notre style est très ouvert d’esprit et nos chansons combinent des éléments de différents genres. Nous sommes 5 personnes du nord de l’Allemagne. Notre premier album Solitary est sorti le 25 Juin par Napalm Records et nous avons sorti trois clips jusqu’à maintenant.
Peux – tu décrire le groupe en trois mots ?
Britta : Bourrin, émotionnel, dense.
Lukas : Intense, mélancolique, monumental.
Quel est votre processus pour écrire des chansons ?
Lukas : En général, en tant qu’auteur principal, j’écris des chansons à la guitare, à la maison et enregistre la première démo. La démo est ensuite envoyé a notre batteur Matthias qui place la batterie. quand la démo guitare + batterie est fini, Britta écrit ses paroles et on enregistre son chant. A ce stade, la chanson est quasiment prête à être enregistrer dans sa version finale.
Britta : Oui, dès que j’ai la démo, je fonce dans ma salle de répétition pour la jouer très forte et fredonne pour trouver ma ligne vocale. Et les premiers mots commence à apparaitre presque automatiquement et je pars de là pour écrire les paroles.
Quel chanson de cet album te représentes le plus ?
Lukas : C’est difficile de répondre à cette question. Je dirai Under Fire, elle pourrait nous présenter d’une bonne manière parce qu’il y a des éléments qui caractérisent notre musique. Dans Under Fire, vous trouverez de la mélodie, mélancolie, des parties épiques et qui restent en tête, des riffs aussi rapide que puissant et différentes parties de chant.
Pourquoi avoir choisi ce titre pour cet album ?
Lukas : Un jour j’ai demandé à Britta si elle avait une idée de comment nommer l’album. Elle est arrivé avec le mot Solitary, et on a tous pensé que ça collé bien. C’est court, simple à reconnaitre et qui confirme l’atmosphère de l’album.
Britta : Solitary (Solitaire) est également un super mot qui décrit le mode de fabrication de cet album principalement à cause de la pandémie et du fait qu’on ne puisse pas se voir physiquement. Donc nous avons tous travailler seul de notre côté. Il y a un certain pouvoir et une certaine solitude. J’aime vraiment ce mot.
Comment s’est de travailler avec Napalm Records ?
Britta : C’est génial ! Avec Napalm Records nous avons un partenaire très fort et compétent de notre côté et nous sommes heureux de cette collaboration. Toute la phase de promotion est très amusante, ils nous tiennent en haleine avec pleins d’interviews, chroniques ect… ! Nous passons un bon moment et tous se passe bien!
Quel est votre première influence musicale ?
Lukas : Il y a beaucoup groupes différents qui m’ont influencé. Mais si je devais en citer qu’un je choisirai Insomnium. Le tout premier groupe qui m’a vraiment influencé c’est Metallica.
Avec quel groupe souhaites-tu travailler ?
Lukas : J’aimerais vraiment travailler avec l’un des groupe de Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy serait géniale (Rires) ) c’est une personne très créative. Mais ça serait toujours intéressant de travailler avec un groupe en dehors de notre genre pour le résultat final.
Qui a dessiné le visuel de l’album ? Peux-tu nous parler de sa représentation ?
Britta : L’artwork a été fait par Costin Chioreanu, qui a déjà travailler avec des groupes comme At The Gates ou Arch Enemy. Nous lui avons envoyé quelques chansons et il a été capable de capturer ce qu’il a entendu dans le design. Il a fait un travail incroyable et nous adorons l’idée depuis le début. Dans un sens la pochette colle à l’album, mais ça rajoute des choses qui le complète. Comme une pièce manquante. La manière dont il a représenté le personnage tenant des feuilles de papier et en même temps les dissoudre dans le torrent de feu est pleines d’interprétations possibles.
Qu’est-ce que tu dirait a quelqu’un qui ne connait pas Hiraes pour lui faire découvrir ?
Lukas : Hey toi ! Oui toi là-bas ! Aimes-tu le death metal mélodique intense, ouvert d’esprit, avec beaucoup de mélodie et de mélancolie tout en restant entêtant ? Et aimes-tu le growl fort et varié combinait avec des riffs de guitare et une batterie lourde ? Si oui, jette un œil sur notre groupe Hiraes !
Quel chanson préfères-tu jouer en live et pourquoi ?
Britta : C’est difficile de répondre étant donné que nous avons pu en jouer qu’une en live-stream pour l’instant. J’adore la chanson Solitary parce que c’est heavy et rapide et elle me donne beaucoup d’énergie. Mais il y a aussi 1000 Lights, un slow qui brûle, qui vous attrape et vous secoue jusqu’à la fin. Mais je suis sûr qu’une fois que nous jouerons en live face au public, c’est la que l’on pourra cibler les chansons préférés de l’audience.

Hi, Can you start by introducing the band for us?
Britta: Yeah sure! We founded HIRAES in early 2020. We play Melodic Death Metal, but our style is very open minded and our songs combine elements from various genres. We’re a 5 piece from Northern Germany. Our first album Solitary came out June 25th through Napalm Records and we have put three music videos out so far.
Can you describe the band with 3 words?
Britta: Hard-hitting, emotional, dense.
Lukas: Intense, melancholic, monumental.
What’s your process to write songs ?
Lukas: Usually I, as the main songwriter, write the songs on guitar at home and record them afterwards to have a first demo version. This guitar demo is then send over to our drummer Mathias who arranges the drums. When the guitar-and-drum-demo is finished, Britta writes her lyrics over it and records her vocals. At this point, the song is almost ready to be recorded in its final version.
Britta: Yeah, as soon as I have the demo version I usually take it to my rehearsal room, play it loud and start phrasing gibberish to it to find my vocal lines. Then the first words start to appear almost automatically and I go from there and write the lyrics.
Which songs on this album represent you the most ?
Lukas: That question is really hard to answer. I would say that Under Fire is probably a song that can present us in a good way, because it contains many elements that characterize our music. In Under Fire you find melodies, melancholy, catchy and epic parts as well as fast riffing, blastbeats and varied vocals.
Why did you choose this title to named the album ?
Lukas: One day I asked Britta if she has an idea how to name the album. She came up with the word Solitary and all of us considered this a name that is absolutely fitting. It’s short, easy to recognize and sums up the overall atmosphere of our debut album very well.
Britta: Solitary is also a great word to describe the mode we wrote the whole album in, mainly because of the pandemic and the fact that we couldn’t meet physically. So we all worked on our own and by ourselves. There is a certain power in it as well as a certain loneliness. I really like the word.
How it’s like to work with Napalm Records ?
Britta: It is going great! With Napalm Records we really have a strong and competent partner on our side and we are more than happy about the collaboration. The whole promotion phase is a lot of fun, they are really keeping us on our heels with many interviews, reviews etc! We’re just having a great time and get along really well!
What’s your first music influence (Band name) ?
Lukas: There are many different bands from different genres that influence me. But if I have to name just one band I would choose Insomnium. The very first band that has ever influenced me was Metallica.
Which band would you like to work with ?
Lukas: I would really like to work with one of the bands of Peter Tägtgren (of course Hypocrisy would be great, haha) as he is a very creative person. But it would also be very interesting to work with a band outside of the metal genre to see what will come out in the end.
Who designed the album visual ? Can you talk about what’s the representation?
Britta: The artwork was done by Costin Chioreanu, who already worked with bands like At The Gates our Arch Enemy. We sent him a few of our songs and he was able to capture what he heard within the cover artwork. He did an amazing job and we loved the idea right from the start. In a way the cover is summing up our songs on that album very well, but it also adds to it and completes it. Like a missing pieces. The way the depicted figure/character is holding on to the sheets of paper and at the same time seems to dissolve within the fire-like wind is full of interpretation possibilities.
What could you say to someone who doesn’t know Hiraes to make them want to discover you?
Lukas: Hey you, yes you over there! Do you like intense and open minded Melodic Death Metal that has a lot of melodies, melancholy and chatchiness to offer? And do you like varied and strong growls in combination with thrilling guitar riffing and relentless drumming? If yes, check out our band Hiraes!
Which song is your favorite to perform and why ?
Britta: That is a difficult question to answer, since we have only played one (streaming) gig yet. I enjoy the title track Solitary a lot, because it’s heavy and fast and just gives me a great energy kick. But also 1000 Lights, a slow burner that seems to grab and shake you towards the end. But I am sure once we start playing our set in front of a present live audience that this trigger new or more favourites depending on how the audience will react to them.
