Boundaries are back! Après l’album “Burying Brigthness” sorti en 2022, les Américains sont de retour avec un troisième album metal / hardcore “Death is little more”, sorti le 29 mars 2024 sous le label 3DOT Recordings. Douze titres dont trois featurings qui ne laissent pas indifférents. Matthew McDougal (chant), Cory Emond (guitare), Tim “Cheese” Sullivan (batterie et chant), Nathan Calcagno (basse et chant) et Cody DelVecchio (guitare) on frappé fort. On décortique tout ça ensemble !
Petite anecdote culturelle pour commencer cet article et pas des moindres. Le nom de l’album “Death is little more” est tiré de “Canto i infierno” ce chant sert de préambule à la divine Comédie. Publié dans le début des années 1300 à Florence, par Dante Alighieri, (le célèbre poète et écrivain Italien). On y retrouve dans la thématique de ce chant, que la vie ne vaut finalement peut-être pas plus que la mort au vu des circonstances atténuantes que nous vivons actuellement. Ce qui est intéressant à noter c’est que ce constat avait déjà été fait sept siècles plus tôt. Cet album touche la corde sensible de la discorde et des conflits de notre génération mais dans un sens des précédentes également.
L’album débute par le morceau “Turning Hate into Rage”. Sans grande surprise aux vues du titre, ce morceau commence avec une puissance et la voix de Matthew McDougal qui laisse à peine le temps aux instruments de se mettre en place pour prendre le lead de la musique. J’apprécie ce mélange parfait avec un bon gros chant hardcore couplé à une batterie bien présente avec des parties chant claires qui s’intègre étonnamment parfaitement avec le paysage sonore. On y perçoit vraiment cette frappe de Tim “Cheese” à la batterie pleine de rage et qui prend fin subitement pour laisser place au second morceau.“ Darkness Shared” prend la relève tout naturellement comme si ce morceau était la continuité du précédent ! Il est difficile de ne pas être pris au cœur par ce titre qui semble être une rupture entre le cœur et la raison.
“I would rather be someone I hate than let you hurt me”
La suivante “Like Petals from a stem” est tout aussi chaotique que les précédentes. Bien plus, dans un esprit deathcore, ce morceau d’à peine une minute trente. On pourrait traduire cette chanson par le point de non-retour. Les paroles sont aussi violentes que la voix, on entre dans une hystérie c’est à la fois hyper agréable à écouter et en même temps très dérangeant de par ces paroles qui parlent clairement d’envie de meurtre, je ne sais pas de qui se parle, mais je n’aimerais pas être à sa place !
Les morceaux s’enchaînent, voilà déjà “Easily Erased” ce morceau clippé présenté au public il y a un mois et est un mélange parfait de partie metalcore et hardcore. Ce morceau est vraiment génial. On y retrouve un équilibre entre la mélodie et les parties chantées avec des moments plus lourds et profonds. L’ambiance du clip colle parfaitement avec la chanson. Certaines scènes sont en noir et blanc, d’autres en couleurs et tout ça colle tout à fait à la palette des sonorités de cette musique.
“Cursed To Remember” commence en chant clair. C’est un morceau très metalcore qui finit avec une vibe plus death mais avec quand même des lourds passages en bitdown, il ne faut pas oublier à qui nous avons affaire ! Ils savent manier leurs armes. Vient ensuite la chanson du même nom que l’album “Death is little more”. Ce morceau à l’écoute a été pour moi assez perturbant, dans le bon sens. Et à la lecture des paroles, encore plus. Il m’a pris aux tripes. On y ressent étrangement beaucoup de souffrance et de haine.
“Life is a fucking war and death is little more”
Mis bout à bout, on y voit parfaitement l’idée de cette déchirure du monde et de la société, à ne plus savoir ce qui est le mieux entre partir, ou continuer de se battre. La suivante est vraiment excellente. Il y a un léger passage dans “A pale light lingers” qui me fait penser à un vieux morceau du groupe For Today, “Fight the silence” qui parlait également de cette société qui part en vrille à l’époque. Ce tout petit moment de quelques secondes ravive un souvenir qui touche particulièrement mon petit cœur. On y retrouve en featuring l’excellent guitariste de Alfa Wolf : Lochie Keogh. Cette chanson est extrêmement bien construite, elle se compose de différentes parties qui s’assemblent bien les unes avec les autres un puzzle parfait.
“Face the blade” s’enchaîne avec le morceau précédent, comme une extension. Pas de rupture dans l’énergie et les instruments, mais il est presque dommage qu’il ne se différencie pas trop de “A pale light lingers”. À noter qu’il monte en puissance sur la fin pour laisser place à “Scars on the soul”. Ce titre est également un morceau sorti avant l’album. On y retrouve l’ambiance générale de ce nouvel opus, des riffs ultras percutants, des jeux de toms entraînants, un ping pong entre le chant clair et les cris.
“Blame’s burden” est le second morceau en featuring. Cette fois-ci, c’est Marcus Vik de Invent Animate qui entre sur le ring. Ce titre est aux abords, bien plus calme que les précédents sur le début et laisse planer une tension palpable avant d’exploser. Un échange entre de magnifiques mélodies à la guitare et le chant se joue. La fin de l’album arrive, c’est le moment de “Blood Soaked Salvation” avec l’ours Américain, le grand Matt Honeycutt, chanteur de Kublai Khan ! Une minute quarante-cinq de claques où Matt prend totalement le dessus sur la chanson et c’est un pur régal !
“Inhale The Grief” vient clore cet album. Des sentiments très présents sont exposés entre la haine et la souffrance, la sensation d’abandon. Seul avec ses pensées. Tout au long de cette histoire, Matt nous a exposé une palette d’émotions très émouvante. Tant les mots que les sonorités nous amènent à ressentir divers sentiments. Cet album est une pure merveille.

Matthew McDougal (vocals), Cory Emond (guitar), Tim “Cheese” Sullivan (drums and vocals), Nathan Calcagno (bass and vocals) and Cody DelVecchio (guitar) they hit it hard. We dissect it all together!
A little cultural anecdote to start this article and not the least important one. The name of the album “Death is little more” is taken from “Canto i infierno” this song serves as a preamble to the Divine Comedy. Published in the early 1300s in Florence, by Dante Alighieri, (the famous Italian poet and writer ). We find in the theme of this song, that life is ultimately perhaps not worth more than death given the extenuating circumstances that we are currently experiencing. What is interesting to note is that this observation had already been made seven centuries earlier. This album touches the heart of the discord and conflicts of our generation but in a sense of previous ones as well.
The album begins with the song “Turning Hate into Rage”. Without much surprise given the title, this piece begins with a power and the voice of Matthew McDougal which barely leaves time for the instruments to take the lead in the music. I appreciate this perfect mix with a good big hardcore vocal coupled with a very present drums with clear vocal parts which integrates surprisingly perfectly with the soundscape. We can really hear this strike from Tim “Cheese” on the drums full of rage and which ends suddenly to give way to the second song. “Darkness Shared” takes over quite naturally as if this song was a continuation of the previous one! It is difficult not to be taken to the heart by this title which seems to be a rupture between the heart and the reason.
“I would rather be someone I hate than let you hurt me”
The next one “Like Petals from a stem” is just as chaotic as the previous ones. Even more, in a deathcore spirit, this track is barely a minute and a half long. This song could be translated as the point of no return. The words are as violent as the voice, we enter into hysteria, it’s both very pleasant to listen to and at the same time very disturbing because of these words which clearly speak of the desire to murder, I don’t know who it is speak, but I wouldn’t want to be in his place!
The songs follow one another, here already is “Easily Erased” this clipped song presented to the public a month ago and is a perfect mix of metalcore and hardcore. This song is really great. There is a balance between the melody and the sung parts with heavier and deeper moments. The atmosphere of the clip fits perfectly with the song. Some scenes are in black and white, others in color and it all fits perfectly with the palette of sounds of this music.
“Cursed To Remember” begins with clean vocals. It’s a very metalcore song that ends with a more death vibe but still has heavy bitdown passages, we must not forget who we are dealing with! They know how to handle their weapons. Next comes the song of the same name as the album “Death is little more”. Listening to this piece was quite disturbing for me, in a good way. And when reading the lyrics, even more so. He grabbed me by the guts. We strangely feel a lot of suffering and hatred.
“Life is a fucking war and death is little more”
End to end, we see perfectly the idea of this tearing of the world and of society, of no longer knowing what is better between leaving, or continuing to fight. The next one is really excellent. There is a slight passage in “A pale light lingers” which makes me think of an old song by the group For Today, “Fight the silence” which also spoke of this society which was going into a tailspin at the time. This tiny moment of a few seconds revives a memory that particularly touches my little heart. We find there featuring the excellent guitarist of Alfa Wolf : Lochie Keogh. This song is extremely well constructed, it is made up of different parts that fit together well into a perfect puzzle.
“Face the blade” follows on from the previous song, like an extension. No break in energy and instruments, but it is almost a shame that it does not differ too much from “A pale light lingers”. Note that it gains momentum at the end to give way to “Scars on the soul”. This title is also a song released before the album. We find the general atmosphere of this new opus, ultra-percussive riffs, catchy tom plays, a ping pong between clean singing and screams.
“Blame’s burden” is the second featuring song. This time, it’s Marcus Vik from Invent Animate who enters the ring. This title is on the outskirts, much calmer than the previous ones at the beginning and leaves a palpable tension before exploding. An exchange between magnificent guitar melodies and vocals plays out. The end of the album arrives, it’s time for “Blood Soaked Salvation” with the American bear, the great Matt Honeycutt, singer of Kublai Khan! One and forty-five minutes of slaps where Matt completely takes over the song and it’s a pure delight!
“Inhale The Grief” closes this album. Very present feelings are exposed between hatred and suffering, the feeling of abandonment. Alone with his thoughts. Throughout this story, Matt showed us a very moving range of emotions. Both words and sounds lead us to feel various feelings. This album is a pure marvel.
