[English below] C’est après cinq années d’absence sur le continent européen Northlane était de retour ce 14 septembre pour un concert à Paris. Une date à guichets fermés, unique en France et qui se déroulait au Trabendo à l’occasion de la promotion de leur EP Mirror’s Edge (sorti en avril dernier). Leur dernière venue datait de 2019 pour promouvoir Alien et avait laissé un vide pour Obsidian, leur album de 2022. On se demandait donc ce que les australiens nous préparaient quant à la setlist de la soirée ! C’est accompagné des français de Ten56 et Novelists que le quatuor poursuit encore actuellement sa tournée européenne.
C’est Ten56 qui ouvre les hostilités avec une courte introduction derrière laquelle suit Saiko. Dès les premières notes on se rend vite compte que le public s’était bel et bien déplacé pour les premières parties !
Les français poursuivent leur set plus qu’énergique avec Diazepam. La prestation du groupe est explosive, ils embrasent le Trabendo avec leurs sons lourds et leurs mélodies entraînantes.
Aaron, le chanteur prend la parole à la fin du morceau et demande au public si des fans old school de Novelists sont présents dans la salle. Évidemment dans le public on entend des cris et c’est ainsi que sur I.C.U, Mattéo, premier chanteur de Novelists monte sur scène pour un feat plus que génial.
Après cela l’ambiance ne redescend pas puisque Ten56 demandera des wall of death sur Yenta. Le set de cette première partie de soirée se poursuit avec Good Morning et Traumadoll dans une énergie communicative porté par la basse très grasse et le screamo puissant de Aaron.
Dans un set sans répis et violent (presque trop devant Northlane ?) Ten56 poursuit avec Boy. Une chose est sûre, leur mission de chauffer le public ce soir est une réussite. Avant de lancer son dernier titre le groupe de deathcore français invite le public à faire un tour sur les stands de merch présents ce soir pour soutenir les groupes quels qu’ils soient. De plus ils demandent du bruit pour Northlane et Novelists à suivre juste après eux. Ils finissent par Kimo et sur scène c’est la folie, le bordel, le guitariste tend sa guitare au public qui joue quelques notes dessus, le bassiste se retrouve presque couchés sur la scène. On peut dire que les non initiés de Ten56 seront surpris par cette performance pour le peu inhabituelle !
Après une attente relativement courte c’est au tour de Novelists de prendre place sur la scène du Trabendo. Le groupe arrive avec le sourire et dans une bonne humeur communicative. Les musiciens commence à jouer Lost Cause et sont rapidement rejoints par Camille Contreras, récente nouvelle chanteuse de la formation.
Les français continuent le set avec Prisoners et Do you really wanna know? et on apprécie vraiment la performance du groupe de metalcore qui met, lui aussi, le feu dans la fosse qui deviens de plus en plus mouvementée. On apprécie également l’accoutrement special de Camille qui arrive maquillé de paillettes et avec des santiagues rouges sur scène, pour sûr on n’est pas prêts d’oublier !
Le set de Novelists continue avec l’un des titres phares de leur album en date : Terrorists. Et si l’album était sorti en 2022 avec à sa tête un chanteur on apprécie énormément le changement de vive que propose Camille et on se laisse emporter.
C’est avec Heretic initialement en feat avec les marseillais de Landmarks que continue ce set énergétique. Le public réagit au quart de tour au son des premières notes et on est impressionnés par le flow de la chanteuse sur les passages de rap normalement chantés par Florent Salfati.
Mourning in the dawn (du dernier EP du groupe sorti en 2024) et l’incontournable Smoke Signals viennent compléter la prestation du groupe. On assiste à de beaux moments où les membres du groupe s’amusent ensemble sur scène, se mettant notamment face à face pour partager basse et guitare. On aime beaucoup en tout cas l’alchimie générale qui règne dans Novelists !
La prestation des français se finira par un titre récent. C’est Turn it up (Keyboard Warrior social club) qui clôture cette fin de première partie alors même qu’on aurait aimé que ce set ne finisse pas aussi vite ! Néanmoins les membres du groupe quittent la scène après avoir remercié le public de sa présente, de son énergie et en assurant qu’ils se sont beaucoup amusé ce soir.
Et l’attente pour Northlane arrive alors à sa fin pour des fans qui auront attendu depuis 2019. C’est sur l’inconique Carbonized d’Obsidian (album de 2022) que les quatres Australiens de la formation arrivent sur scène sous les applaudissements et les cris du public. Dès les premières paroles chantées par Marcus on entends les fans hurler les lyrics en coeur. On sens bel et bien que l’attente aura été de longue haleine.
Northlane, pleins de surprise poursuit son set avec Intution tiré de Mesmer (album de 2017). Le public est visiblement surpris mais conquis et c’est dans une fosse en délire que le set se poursuit avec Miasma du dernier EP sorti en 2024. Marcus Bridge annonce, avant le début du morceau qu’ils vont jouer ce soir des titres de Mirror’s Edge, plus récents, et invite le public à chanter avec lui s’il connait les paroles. Ce sera évidement le cas dans une fosse qui bouge plus que jamais et dans laquelle un défilé de crowdsurfers à commencé en continu.
C’est 4D et Talking Heads qui suivent dans une ambiance folle mettant ainsi à l’honneur Alien sorti en 2019. Le son lourd et le côté djent de Northlane nous séduit de nouveau et on est très contents que les australiens jouent un peu de tout de leur discographie. On remarquera la monture futuriste de Jonathon Deiley qui illuminé en rouge se voit particulièrement sur scène quand les éclairages sont foncés et on apprécie le jeu puissant et incroyable et Nic Pettersen à la batterie qui donne le rythme à l’ensemble.
Le set se poursuit par Kraft de Mirror’s Edge, un son qui à sa sortie nous valait surpris de par son rythme saccadé, le chant particulier notamment dans les couplets et qui se dresse dans la continuité de la carrière des australiens notamment sur le côté électro.
Bloodline dont les paroles seront carrément hurlées par le public suit derrière. L’euphorie est générale et on voit que le groupe est visiblement très heureux de jouer au Trabendo ce soir. Marcus remercie le public pour sa présence dans l’une des premières dates de la tournée sold out ce soir là et ce à plusieurs reprises pendant le set!
Le concert continue avec Dante, single du EP Mirror’s Edge et se poursuit avec deux titres d’Obsidian : Echo Chamber et Clarity. Dans la fosse aucun répit, le public meurt de chaud mais l’ambiance ne redescend à aucun moment. Les fans semblent particulièrement contents d’assister à des titres de cet album qui n’aura pas eu de tournée européenne pendant les années suivant sa sortie… Une patience finalement récompensée ce soir !
Marcus nous tease ensuite quelque chose de spécial pour continuer la soirée et c’est sous l’étonnement général que Northlane se lance dans un medley de plusieurs titres tirés de sa discographie. Celui-ci commence avec Ra (Node, 2015) et se poursuit avec Worldeater (Singularity, 2013) et Dispossession (premier album du groupe : Discoveries, 2011) avant de se finir par Jinn (Alien, 2019). Les fans les plus anciens du groupe ont pu profiter de ce passage incroyable du concert évidement mixé de manière à ce que tout fonctionne ensemble. On ne s’attendait vraiment pas à ça de notre côté, jamais on aurait pensé entendre plusieurs des morceaux présents dans le medley dans un concert de Northlane en 2024 !
Les applaudissements se font nombreux à la fin de ce mix de son improbable et le public est à nouveau surpris par un Northane qui continu sa soirée avec Solar tout droit sorti de Mesmer (2017). Mirror’s Edge, titre éponyme du dernier EP mais aussi de cette tournée est enfin joué juste après et se fini naturellement sur Afterimage puisque, rapellons-le il s’agit en réalité d’un morceau instrumental servant d’introduction au single. Une courte accalmie dans un concert sportif dans la fosse et qui repart de plus belle en hurlant les paroles de Afterimage avec Marcus.
Le set de Northlane arrive à sa fin avec deux titres d’Obsidian. Tout d’abord les australiens embrasent de nouveau le Trabendo avec l’iconique Clockwork durant laquelle la fosse continuera d’être en délire et sous une pluie de crowdsurfers aguerris auxquels Josh et Marcus feront des sourires à chaque fois qu’ils passent. Le set se finira par l’imprévisible Nova, un titre atmosphérique et planant que l’on aurait pas non plus pensé entendre ce soir. L’ambiance se veux quelque peu nostalgique pour la fin de cette prestation des australiens qui nous auront préparé une setlist capable de faire plaisir à tout types de fan de Northlane, du plus anciens aux plus récents.
C’est sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements que le groupe quitte la scène avant de revenir quelques instants après pour jouer un titre supplémentaire : Citizen (2017) , lui aussi inattendu, à l’image du set de cette soirée !
On retiendra du passage de Northlane une énergie folle que ce soit sur scène comme dans la fosse, la voix puissante et cristalline de Marcus, le jeu impeccable de Josh, l’improbable jeu de Jonathan sur son pad et bien sûr l’entraînante batterie de Nic.
De notre côté, nous n’avons qu’une hâte, celle de revoir Northlane passer chez nous mais il faudra surement être patient !
[ENGLISH VERSION] After five years of absence from the European continent, Northlane was back on September 14th with a concert in Paris. A closed-door meeting, unique in France and which took place at the Trabendo on the occasion of the promotion of their EP Mirror’s Edge (released last April). Their last visit was in 2019 to promote Alien and had left a void for Obsidian, their 2022 album. So we wondered what the Australians had in store for us regarding the evening’s setlist! It is accompanied by the French Ten56 and Novelists that the quartet is currently continuing its European tour.
It is Ten56 who opens the hostilities with a short introduction followed by Saiko. From the first notes we quickly realize that the audience was sick and had moved for the first parts!
The French continue their more than energetic set with Diazepam. The band’s performance is explosive, they embrace the Trabendo with their heavy sounds and catchy melodies. Aaron, the singer takes the floor at the end of the song and asks the audience if there are any fans of the old school Novelists in the room. Obviously in the audience we hear screams and so on I.C.U Matteo, the first singer of Novelists goes on stage for a more than brilliant feat.
After that, the atmosphere doesn’t go down since Ten56 will ask for wall of death on Yenta. The set of this first part of the evening continues with Good Morning and Traumadoll in a communicative energy carried by the very fat bass and the powerful screamo of Aaron.
In a relentless and violent set (almost too much in front of Northlane?) Ten56 continues with Boy. One thing is sure, their mission to warm up the audience tonight is a success. Before launching their last song, the French deathcore band invites the audience to take a look at the merch stands present tonight to support the bands whatever they are. In addition, they ask for noise for Northlane and Novelists to follow right after them. They end with Kimo and on stage it’s madness, chaos, the guitarist holds out his guitar to the audience who play a few notes on it, the bassist finds himself almost lying on the stage. We can say that the uninitiated of Ten56 will be surprised by this somewhat unusual performance!
After a relatively short wait it’s the turn of Novelists to take their place on the Trabendo stage. The band arrives with a smile and in a good communicative mood. The musicians start playing Lost Cause and are quickly joined by Camille Contreras, the recent new vocalist of the band.
The French continue the set with Prisoners and Do you really wanna know? and we really appreciate the performance of the metalcore band who also sets the pit on fire which becomes more and more lively. We also appreciate Camille’s special outfit who arrives on stage with glitter makeup and red cowboy boots, for sure we won’t forget it soon!
The Novelists set continues with one of the flagship tracks from their album to date: Terrorists. And if the album had been released in 2022 with a singer at its head, we greatly appreciate the change of pace that Camille offers and we let ourselves be carried away.
It is with Heretic initially in feat with Landmarks that this energetic set continues. The audience reacts immediately to the sound of the first notes and we are impressed by the flow of the singer on the rap passages normally sung by Florent Salfati.
Mourning in the dawn (from the group’s latest EP released in 2024) and the essential Smoke Signals complete the group’s performance. We witness beautiful moments where the members of the group have fun together on stage, notably coming face to face to share bass and guitar. In any case, we really like the general alchemy that reigns in Novelists!
The French performance will end with a recent title. It is Turn it up (Keyboard Warrior social club) which closes this end of the first part even though we would have liked this set not to end so quickly! Nevertheless, the members of the group leave the stage after thanking the audience for their presence, their energy and assuring that they had a lot of fun tonight.
And the wait for Northlane then comes to an end for fans who will have waited since 2019. It is on the iconic Carbonized from Obsidian (2022 album) that the four Australians of the band arrive on stage to the applause and screams of the audience. From the first words sung by Marcus we hear the fans screaming the lyrics in unison.
Northlane, full of surprises, continues its set with Intuition taken from Mesmer (2017 album). The audience is visibly surprised but conquered and it is in a delirious pit that the set continues with Miasma from the latest EP released in 2024. Marcus Bridge announces, before the start of the song that they will play more recent Mirror’s Edge tracks tonight, and invites the audience to sing along if they know the lyrics. This will obviously be the case in a pit that moves more than ever and in which a parade of crowdsurfers has started continuously.
It is 4D and Talking Heads who follow in a crazy atmosphere thus honoring Alien released in 2019. The heavy sound and the djent side of Northlane seduces us again and we are very happy that the Australians play a little bit of everything from their discography. We will notice the futuristic mount of Jonathan Deiley which illuminated in red is particularly visible on stage when the lights are dark and we appreciate the powerful and incredible playing and Nic Pettersen on drums who gives the rhythm to the whole.
The set continues with Kraft from Mirror’s Edge, a song that when it was released surprised us with its jerky rhythm, the particular singing especially in the verses and which stands in the continuity of the career of the Australians especially on the electro side.
Bloodline whose lyrics will be downright screamed by the audience follows behind. The euphoria is general and we see that the group is visibly very happy to play at the Trabendo tonight. Marcus thanks the audience for their presence in one of the first dates of the sold out tour that night and this several times during the set!
The concert continues with Dante, single from the EP Mirror’s Edge and continues with two Obsidian tracks: Echo Chamber and Clarity. In the pit, no respite, the audience is dying of heat but the atmosphere does not drop at any time. The fans seem particularly happy to attend tracks from this album which will not have had a European tour during the years following its release… A patience finally rewarded tonight! Marcus then teases us with something special to continue the evening and it is to everyone’s astonishment that Northlane launches into a medley of several tracks from their discography. This one begins with Ra (Node, 2015) and continues with Worldeater (Singularity, 2013) and Dispossession (the band’s first album: Discoveries, 2011) before ending with Jinn (Alien, 2019). The oldest fans of the band were able to enjoy this incredible part of the concert obviously mixed in such a way that everything works together. We really didn’t expect that on our side, we never thought we’d hear several of the songs in the medley in a Northlane concert in 2024!
The applause is numerous at the end of this improbable sound mix and the audience is surprised again by a Northane who continues his evening with Solar straight out of Mesmer (2017). Mirror’s Edge, eponymous title of the last EP but also of this tour is finally played right after and naturally ends on Afterimage since, let’s remember, it is actually an instrumental piece serving as an introduction to the single. A short lull in a sporty concert in the pit and which starts again with renewed vigor by screaming the lyrics of Afterimage with Marcus.
Northlane‘s set comes to an end with two Obsidian songs. First of all, the Australians set the Trabendo ablaze again with the iconic Clockwork during which the crowd continued to go wild and under a shower of seasoned crowdsurfers to whom Josh and Marcus smiled every time they passed. The set ended with the unpredictable Nova, an atmospheric and soaring track that we wouldn’t have thought we’d hear tonight either. The atmosphere was somewhat nostalgic for the end of this performance by the Australians who had prepared a setlist capable of pleasing all types of Northlane fans, from the oldest to the most recent.
It was to thunderous applause that the band left the stage before returning a few moments later to play an additional track: Citizen (2017), also unexpected, like the set of this evening!
We will remember Northlane‘s performance as a crazy energy whether on stage or in the pit, Marcus‘ powerful and crystal clear voice, Josh‘s impeccable playing, Jonathan‘s improbable playing on his pad and of course Nic‘s dragging drums.
For our part, we can’t wait to see Northlane come to our place again, but we’ll probably have to be patient!
