[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Après avoir pris congé de Mötley Crüe en 2022, certains pensaient que Mick Mars était probablement « mort et enterré » mais il n’en est rien rien! Le guitariste sortira son premier album solo, The Other Side Of Mars , ce vendredi 23 février via 1313, LLC en partenariat avec MRI. Mick s’est entouré pour ce premier opus de Paul Taylor (claviériste , ancien Alice Cooper et Winger) qui l’a également aidé à co-écrire la majorité des morceaux , Jacob Bunton (chant), Ray Luzier (Korn) à la batterie, Chris Collier (bassiste mais également responsable du mix et du mastering final) et Brion Gamboa (également chanteur sur deux morceaux).
Et on commence directement avec le premier single extrait de cet album à savoir Loyal to the Lie! Une bonne façon d’ouvrir ce nouveau chapitre de sa carrière, on a ici un morceau littéralement tubesque avec une rythmique hyper catchy et un refrain très Hard Rock FM du plus bel effet sur lequel la voix de Jacob Bunton révèle tout son potentiel. Broken On The Inside continue sur sa lancée et là où certains s’attendraient à une débauche de technicité de la part de Monsieur Mars, les morceaux sont assez simples et au final c’est tout aussi bien qu’un déluge de solo, même si ce deuxième titre en contient un très beau. Le final est également assez surprenant, le morceau semblant se désagréger complétement avec des sons qui font penser à des interférences.
La ballade Rock Alone est là encore une très bonne surprise et permet encore une fois à Jacob de s’exprimer pleinement tout en collant des frissons à tout un chacun. Sur Killing Breed, c’est cette fois-ci Brion Gamboa qu’on retrouve au chant et le morceau change complètement d’ambiance par rapport aux précédents, on a ici quelque chose de beaucoup plus sombre et des mélodies qui raviront sûrement les amateurs de musique plus « lourdes » comme par exemple le Doom. Quand au guitariste, il nous gratifie ici de ce qui est probablement le meilleur solo sur cet album. Memories revient à quelque chose de plus doux, on a ici donc une vraie ballade en piano-voix dans la parfaite continuité de Alone. Right Side Of Wrong devrait plaire aux nostalgiques de l’Era John Corabi du Crüe tandis que Ready To Roll mêle à la fois modernité et influences des 80′ (comme Ain’t Going Back présent plus loin sur l’album).
C’est étonnement sur les morceaux les plus longs sur ce premier opus qu’on retrouve Brion Gamboa, Undone est donc l’ultime titre sur lequel le vocaliste apparaît en continuant à apporter une touche bien plus sombre avec son timbre de voix que son comparse Jacob Bunton, leurs différences mélodiques sont ce qui apporte un plus aux compositions de Mick Mars (même si on aurait bien vu Brion apparaître peut-être un peu plus sur cet album). The Other Side Of Mars se referme avec LA Noir, il était presque évident qu’on retrouverait un titre 100% instrumental ici et c’est le cas des influences Hard Rock teintées de Blues, une belle façon de clore ce premier chapitre.
N’enterrez jamais un artiste aussi vite que vous avez pu enterrer Mick Mars! Le guitariste/compositeur prouve ici que son talent est intact en délivrant un album à sa hauteur : Grand, Rock et Mélodique à souhait! Ce nouveau chapitre de sa carrière lui promet en tout cas de belles choses pour la suite.

After taking his leave of Mötley Crüe in 2022, some thought that Mick Mars was probably « dead and buried », but that’s not the case! The guitarist will release his first solo album, The Other Side Of Mars , this Friday 23 February via 1313, LLC in partnership with MRI. For this first opus, Mick has surrounded himself with Paul Taylor (keyboardist, former Alice Cooper and Winger) who also helped him co-write the majority of the tracks, Jacob Bunton (vocals), Ray Luzier (Korn) on drums, Chris Collier (bassist but also responsible for the mix and final mastering) and Brion Gamboa (also vocalist on two tracks).
And we start straight away with the first single from the album, Loyal to the Lie! A great way to open this new chapter in his career, the track is literally a hit, with a super catchy rhythm and a very hard rock FM chorus to great effect, on which Jacob Bunton‘s voice reveals its full potential. Broken On The Inside continues in the same vein, and where some might expect a flurry of technicality from Mr Mars, the tracks are pretty straightforward and ultimately just as good as a deluge of solos, even if this second track does contain one very fine one. The finale is also quite surprising, the track seeming to disintegrate completely with sounds reminiscent of interference.
The ballad Rock Alone is another pleasant surprise, once again allowing Jacob to express himself to the full while sending shivers down everyone’s spine. On Killing Breed, it’s Brion Gamboa‘s turn on vocals this time, and the mood of the track is completely different from the previous ones, with something much darker and melodies that will surely delight fans of ‘heavier’ music such as doom. As for the guitarist, he gives us what is probably the best solo on this album. Memories returns to something softer, a true piano-vocals ballad in perfect continuity with Alone. Right Side Of Wrong should appeal to those nostalgic for Crüe‘s John Corabi Era, while Ready To Roll combines modernity with 80s influences (such as Ain’t Going Back, featured later on the album).
Surprisingly, it’s on the longest tracks on this first opus that we find Brion Gamboa, Undone being the last track on which the vocalist appears, continuing to bring a much darker touch with his voice than his colleague Jacob Bunton, their melodic differences being what brings a plus to Mick Mars‘ compositions (even if we would have liked to see Brion appear a little more on this album). The Other Side Of Mars closes with LA Noir, and it was almost obvious that there would be a 100% instrumental track here, which is the case with the Blues-tinged Hard Rock influences, a fine way to close this first chapter.
Never bury an artist as quickly as you buried Mick Mars! The guitarist/composer proves here that his talent is intact by delivering an album worthy of him: big, rocking and melodic to the max! In any case, this new chapter in his career promises great things for the future.
