[ENGLISH BELOW] Amaranthe débarque avec un nouvel album intitulé The Catalyst, disponible à partir du 23 février 2024 et produit par le label Nuclear Blast. Henrik Englund (GG6) ayant quitté le groupe en 2022, cet album marque l’arrivée du nouveau chanteur guttural Mikael Sehlin.
L’album commence avec The Catalyst qui tout de suite montre le virage musical du groupe beaucoup plus accès sur la partie synthétiseur tout en gardant la patte Amaranthe. Un bon départ qui promet des changements sans en faire de trop. Ecstasy est dans la même dynamique.
Insatiable est l’un des singles sortis et il est en adéquation avec la précédente, un rythme soutenu toujours en décalage avec les différents chanteurs tout en ajoutant ses nouvelles sonorités.
Mon coup de cœur au niveau des singles c’est Damnation Flame, et que dire à part que c’est une pépite de composition surtout avec cet interlude légèrement baroque qui colle en plus à 100% avec le clip. Ce titre me fait vraiment penser à Archangel présent sur leur précédent album Manifest sorti en 2020.
Cette fois ci on nous propose des couplets avec la voix mielleuse d’Elize, des couplets plus saccadés de la part de Nils avec un soupçon de Mikael, mais il ne faut pas oublier de rajouter la guitare d’Olof toujours aussi électrique, la basse de Johan qui en impose et la batterie qui se fait martyrisée par Morten et sans oublier les petits sons électro et le tout nous donne Liberated. La recette se répète avec Resistance mais cette fois – ci avec un peu plus de panache.
Avec Re Vision l’album prend un sacré tournant qui pour le coup ne sera pas spécialement du goût de tout le monde en tout cas pas à la première écoute. J’ai personnellement mis du temps avec les chœurs au vocodeur et l’interlude très dancefloor mais en fin de compte c’est très cohérent et ça passe plutôt bien.
Interference est sauvé par les couplets de Mikael car pour le coup cette chanson est vraiment pas la plus dynamique et créer sans mauvais jeu de mots une interférence. Je suis juste rassuré qu’elle ne dure pas plus longtemps. A voir en live si ça vaut le coup.
Stay A Little While est la nouvelle ballade du groupe et le moins que l’on puisse dire c’est qu’il n’y a rien a dire dessus, elles sont toujours exceptionnelles et cette dernière ne fait pas exception à la règle.
Breaking The Waves part complètement en sucette et pour moi celle-ci n’a rien a faire dans cet opus.
L’avant dernier des singles c’est Outer Dimensions et il nous a permis de nous préparer à ces changements, il nous prouve également que l’on peut toujours s’amuser avec le groupe.
Find Life est le dernier single et il est très caractéristique car il ne contient pas de chant guttural, ça change mais ce n’est pas du tout gênant car on retrouve bien tout ce qui fait le succès d’Amaranthe.
Dernière et unique chanson de cet opus Fading Like A Flower est une cover du groupe de rock suédois des années 80/90 Roxette, et toujours à la sauce Amaranthe. Et c’est vraiment une super conclusion qui donne un coup de neuf à cette chanson.
Amaranthe nous propose un album aux sonorités diverses et variées. Un virage artistique qui pourrait choquer certains de leurs fans. Je reste cependant partagée sur cet album notamment sur les choix des chansons présentes. Il est très différent de Manifest qui à mon sens est leur meilleur album musicalement parlant. Mikael Sehlin est un excellent choix et nous fait facilement oublier Henrik Englund (GG6).

Amaranthe arrives with a new album entitled The Catalyst, available from February 23, 2024 and produced by the Nuclear Blast label.
With Henrik Englund (GG6) having left the band in 2022, this album marks the arrival of new throaty singer Mikael Sehlin.
The album kicks off with The Catalyst, which immediately shows the band’s musical turn towards a more synthesizer-based sound, while retaining the Amaranthe feel. A good start that promises change without overdoing it. Ecstasy is in the same spirit.
Insatiable is one of the singles released, and it’s right in line with the previous one, a steady rhythm always out of step with the different singers while adding its new sounds.
My favorite single is Damnation Flame, and what can I say except that it’s a compositional jewel, especially with its slightly baroque interlude, which fits 100% with the video. This track really reminds me of Archangel from their previous album, Manifest, released in 2020.
This time around, we’re treated to verses with Elize‘s shabby vocals, more jerky verses from Nils with a hint of Mikael, but don’t forget to add Olof‘s ever-electric guitar, Johan‘s imposing bass and Morten‘s hammering drum, not to mention the little electro sounds, and the whole thing gives us Liberated. The recipe is repeated with Resistance, but this time with a little more dash and style.
With Re Vision, the album takes quite a turn for the worse, and not everyone will be happy with it, at least not on first listen. Personally, it took me a while to get used to the vocoder backing vocals and the dancefloor interlude, but in the end it’s very coherent and goes down pretty well.
Interference is saved by Mikael’s verses, because this song isn’t really the most dynamic and creates, no pun intended, an interference. I’m just glad it doesn’t last any longer. See it live if it’s worth it.
Stay A Little While is the band’s new ballad, and to say the least, there’s nothing to say about it: they’re always exceptional, and this one is no exception.
Breaking The Waves goes completely off the rails and, for me, has no place in this record.
The second-bottom single is Outer Dimensions, and not only has it helped us prepare for these changes, it also proves that we can still have fun with the band.
Find Life is the last single, and it’s very distinctive in that it doesn’t contain any guttural vocals. It’s a change, but it’s not at all embarrassing, because it has everything that makes Amaranthe so successful.
The last and only song on this opus, Fading Like A Flower is a cover of the 80s/90s Swedish rock band Roxette, and still in Amaranthe style. And it’s a really great conclusion that gives this song a new lease of life.
Amaranthe offers us an album of diverse and varied sounds. An artistic shift that may shock some of their fans. However, I still have mixed feelings about this album, particularly the choice of songs on it. It’s very different from Manifest, which in my opinion is their best album musically speaking. Mikael Sehlin is an excellent choice, and easily makes us forget Henrik Englund (GG6).
