[ENGLISH BELOW] A l’occasion de la sortie de leur nouvel EP, j’ai pu poser quelques questions à Chaney Crabb, vocaliste de Entheos. Merci à Andreas de Metal Blade Records pour cette opportunité!
1/ Bonjour, peux-tu te présenter et présenter Entheos pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas le groupe ?
Chaney : Je m’appelle Chaney Crabb et je suis la chanteuse d’Entheos. Nous sommes un groupe de Metal de deux personnes de Nashville, TN. Nous qualifions souvent notre genre de « death grunge ». L’autre membre de Entheos est Navene Koperweis, batteur et multi-instrumentiste qui a fait partie de Animals As Leaders, Animosity, The Faceless, Hoods et a joué sur les albums de Machine Head, Whitechapel, Job For a Cowboy entre autres.
2/Depuis 2020, vous vous produisez en duo. Comment ce changement a-t-il affecté la dynamique d’Entheos et votre processus d’écriture ?
Chaney : Je dirais que cela n’a pas beaucoup changé notre processus d’écriture, même si cela implique moins de contributions de la part des autres. Navene a été le principal compositeur de notre groupe depuis le début, j’ai toujours écrit toutes les chansons et chanté toutes les voix. La principale différence est que depuis 2020, Navene a non seulement écrit, mais aussi interprété toutes les pistes de guitare de nos albums. Lorsque nous jouons en concert, nous sommes honorés de pouvoir emmener avec nous certains des musiciens les plus incroyables avec nous.
3/Votre nouvel EP, An End To Everything, sort dans quelques jours ! Comment aborde-tu cette sortie ?
Chaney : An End to Everything est l’album que je préfère, aussi cliché que cela puisse paraître.
4/Comment s’est déroulé le processus d’écriture et de composition de ces cinq titres, et pourquoi avez-vous choisi de sortir un EP plutôt qu’un album ?
Chaney : Le processus d’écriture de « AETE » s’est déroulé durant l’été et l’automne 2023. Nous avons enregistré l’ensemble de l’album avec Mark Lewis pendant quelques mois – nous avons la chance que Mark habite à moins d’un kilomètre de nous, ce qui nous a permis de travailler avec lui sur les chansons pendant une longue période.
Navene a tout écrit à la guitare et à la batterie, puis Mark, Navene, Evan (Brewer) et moi-même nous réunissions pour passer en revue chaque morceau, afin de décider si certaines sections n’étaient pas à leur place et comment aborder la construction des meilleures structures de chansons pour chaque morceau. Nous n’avons pas beaucoup changé
ce que Navene avait écrit, mais nous avions quelques suggestions pour chaque morceau.
Ensuite, nous avons emmené chaque chanson chez Mark et lui et Navene ont passé beaucoup de temps à trouver les bonnes tonalités pour l’album, les bonnes sonorités pour l’enregistrement – batterie, guitare et basse. Navene a ajouté des couches et j’ai enregistré les voix avec Mark.
Travailler avec Mark a vraiment renforcé notre processus créatif parce que, non seulement c’est un ami proche, mais il comprend vraiment ce que nous voulons faire.
Notre objectif est d’enregistrer et de mettre sur disque les meilleurs aspects de notre groupe pour vraiment capturer la performance de chaque instrument. Le style de production de Mark est le complément parfait de notre son.
5/ Vous avez déjà sorti quatre des cinq titres de l’EP. Qu’est-ce qui vous a poussé à révéler la quasi-totalité de l’EP avant sa sortie officielle ?
Chaney : Notre but en sortant les choses de cette manière était de laisser chaque titre se défendre seul. Chaque chanson est accompagnée d’un clip vidéo et nous espérions que cette façon de faire donnerait à chaque chanson l’attention que nous pensions qu’elle méritait.
6/Il y a aussi du chant clair sur An End To Everything. Qu’est-ce qui vous a poussé à inclure ce type de chant dans vos nouvelles compositions ? Et en tant que vocaliste, quelles sont tes principales sources d’inspiration ?
Chaney : J’ai toujours été une chanteuse « propre », même bien avant d’apprendre à crier, donc cela a toujours été mon but d’incorporer le chant clair dans notre musique. J’ai commencé à le faire sur notre dernier album, Time Will Take Us All, que nous avons sorti l’année dernière. Je pense que la musique exige parfois de chanter plutôt que de crier.
Parfois, c’est l’ambiance de nos morceaux qui l’exige et je n’ai pas envie de m’appuyer sur les cris juste parce qu’ils sont plus forts que le chant.
Mon but est toujours d’écrire une bonne chanson, donc si je sens que quelque chose nécessite du chant, alors je le ferai. Je n’ai aucun intérêt à forcer les choses juste pour le plaisir. J’ai une tonne d’inspiration pour le chant – Marissa Nadler, Anthony Green (Circa Survive), Miki Berenyi / Emma Anderson (Lush), Emma Ruth Rundle, Chelsea Wolfe, Layne Staley, Marilyn Manson, Trent Reznor, Joni Mitchell, Maynard Keenan, Tori Amos, Stevie Nicks, etc, mélancolique, éthéré.
7/Vous abordez de nombreux thèmes personnels dans cet EP, dont certains ont trait à la santé mentale. Est-il important pour vous d’aborder ce genre de sujets dans votre musique ?
Chaney : Il est important pour moi d’utiliser la musique que je fais comme une catharsis.
Tout ce que je vis ou traverse en direct se retrouve inévitablement dans mes paroles. Avant d’écrire les paroles de cet EP, j’ai perdu un ami très proche à cause de la consommation de drogue. J’ai vu tout cela de près et c’est quelque chose que j’avais besoin d’affronter. Les paroles m’ont permis de le faire.
8/Avez-vous des projets pour le reste de l’année 2024 et le début de l’année 2025 ?
Chaney : Nous écrivons actuellement un album complet que nous enregistrerons fin 2024/début 2025. En janvier, nous partirons pour une tournée dans le sud des Etats-Unis avec Born of Osiris et Within Destruction.
9/ Quels groupes ou artistes écoutes-tu en ce moment ?
Chaney : Je recommanderai toujours Marissa Nadler, qui est l’une de mes chanteuses préférées de tous les temps. J’ai aussi écouté beaucoup de Lush, Drab Majesty, le nouvel album de The Cure et une tonne de rock classique, c’est-à-dire Crosby, Stills and Nash, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, etc.

[ENGLISH VERSION] To coincide with the release of their new EP, I was able to ask Entheos vocalist Chaney Crabb a few questions. Thanks to Andreas of Metal Blade Records for this opportunity!
1/ Hello, could you introduce yourself and Entheos for those who may not know the band?
Chaney : My name is Chaney Crabb and I’m the vocalist of Entheos. We’re a two-piece metal band from Nashville, TN. We often refer to our genre as ‘death grunge’. The other member of Entheos is Navene Koperweis, he is a drummer and multi-instrumentalist who has been in Animals As Leaders, Animosity, The Faceless, Hoods and has played on albums for Machine Head, Whitechapel, Job For a Cowboy among others.
2/Since 2020, you’ve been performing as a duo. How has this change affected the dynamics of Entheos and your songwriting process?
Chaney : I would say that it hasn’t changed our songwriting process to a great degree, though it involves less input from others. Navene has been the main songwriter in our band from the beginning, and I have always written all of our lyrics and performed all of our vocals. The main difference is that since 2020 Navene has not only written, but also performed all guitar tracks on our albums. When we play live we’re honored to be able to bring some of the most incredible musicians along with us.
3/Your new EP, An End To Everything, is coming out in a few days! How do you feel about this upcoming release?
Chaney : “An End to Everything” is my favorite release that I’ve ever been apart of, as cliche as it sounds.
4/What was the writing and composing process like for these five tracks, and why did you choose to release an EP instead of a full-length album?
Chaney : The writing process for ‘AETE’ took place in the summer and fall of 2023. We tracked the entire album with Mark Lewis over a few months – we’re lucky because Mark lives less than a mile from us, so we were able to work on the songs with him for an extended period of time.
Navene wrote everything on guitar and demo drums and then Mark, Navene, Evan (Brewer) and I would get together and go over each track – deciding if any sections felt out of place and how to approach building the best song structures with each track. We didn’t change a lot of what Navene had written but we did have a few suggestions for each track.
From there we took each song to Mark’s and he and Navene spent a lot of time finding the
right tones for the record – drums, guitar and bass. Navene added layers and I tracked vocals with Mark.
Working with Mark has really strengthened our creative process because, not only is he a close friend of ours, but he truly understands our vision. Our aim is to have the best aspects of our band recorded and put on record – to truly capture the performance of each instrument. Mark’s production style is the perfect compliment to our sound.
5/You’ve already released four out of the five tracks from the EP. What motivated you to reveal almost the entire EP before its official release?
Chaney : Our goal with releasing things this way was to let every single track stand on its own. Every song has a music video to accompany it and we were hopeful that releasing things this way would give every song the attention we felt they all deserve.
6/There’s also clean singing on An End To Everything. What inspired you to include this kind of vocals in your new compositions? And as a vocalist, who are your main sources of inspiration?
Chaney : I’ve always been a ‘clean’ singer, even long before I learned to scream, so it’s always been my goal to incorporate singing in our music. I began doing that on our last album, Time Will Take Us All, which we released last year. I think that sometimes music calls for singing over screaming – sometimes that’s what the mood of our tracks call for and I’m not interested in relying on screaming just because it’s apart of what I do. My goal is always to write a good song so if I feel that something calls for singing then I’m going to do that. I have no interest in forcing things just for the sake of it.
I have a ton of singing inspiration – Marissa Nadler, Anthony Green (Circa Survive), Miki Berenyi / Emma Anderson (Lush), Emma Ruth Rundle, Chelsea Wolfe, Layne Staley, Marilyn Manson, Trent Reznor, Joni Mitchell, Maynard Keenan, Tori Amos, Stevie Nicks etc. —- I love moody, melancholy, ethereal singing.
7/You touch on many personal themes in this EP, some of which relate to mental health. Is it important for you to address these kinds of subjects in your music?
Chaney : It’s important for me to use the music that I make as catharsis, so whatever I’m
experiencing or going through in live will inevitably find itself in my lyrics. Before I wrote the lyrics to this EP I lost a very close friend because of the drug use of someone who he had enabled. I saw this all happen firsthand and it’s something that I needed to deal with. Lyrics were how I did that.
8/Do you have any plans for the rest of 2024 and early 2025?
Chaney : We’re currently writing a full-length album which we’ll be recording in late 2024/early 2025. In January we’ll be heading out on a southern US tour with Born of Osiris and Within Destruction.
9/ What bands or artists are you currently listening to that you would recommend to our readers?
Chaney : I will always recommend Marissa Nadler, who is one of my favorite singers of all time. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Lush, Drab Majesty, the new The Cure record and a ton of classic rock i.e. Crosby, Stills and Nash, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, etc.
