[ENGLISH BELOW] 4 ans après leur premier album éponyme, GHØSTKID seront de retour ce vendredi 22 mars avec leur deuxième album intitulé HOLLYWOOD SUICIDE via Century Media Records. « Le plus gros problème de l’art aujourd’hui, c’est qu’il ne fait plus mal » avait déclaré Sebastian “Sushi” Biesler (GHØSTKID) pour la promotion de l’album, ce nouvel opus va-t-il faire mal? La réponse dans cette chronique!
HOLLYWOOD SUICIDE est également le nom du morceau qui ouvre cet album et inutile de dire que comme morceau d’ouverture, GHØSTKID frappe fort! Malgré un chant clair un peu « faiblard » le scream de Sebastian est puissant tout comme le morceau en lui-même qui reste percutant et avec une belle énergie qui en live devrait faire mouche. Le titre suivant S3X ralentit un peu le rythme et mets cette fois-ci réellement le chant clair en valeur, la voix du chanteur est poignante notamment sur le refrain :

Ce nouveau morceau se rapproche ici plus d’un hymne Nu-Metal avec une ambiance plus immersive dégagée par les émotions du chanteur que du Metalcore Energique du premier morceau tandis que FSU revient à l’énergie déployée sur le titre d’ouverture, avec un refrain qui fait étrangement penser à Electric Callboy (ancien groupe de Sebastian). Le genre de banger qui fera réagir le pit au quart de tour en concert! HEAVY RAIN voit le potentiel des parties de guitares et des lignes de basse exploser, sur tout l’album l’instrumental est très bon mais particulièrement bien mis en valeur sur ce titre. La thématique est aussi très forte, on peut noter des phrases qui font référence à l’auto-mutilation ( « TODAY YOUR LIPS TASTE LIKE BROKEN GLASS/I TRIED MY BEST BUT YOUR WORDS KEEP ON CUTTING ME UP ») même si c’est probablement métaphorique, les thèmes abordés sur ce nouvel album sont particulièrement lourds de sens (violence, abus divers, suicide…), ce morceau n’échappe pas à la règle.
VALERIE est un de mes coups de coeur sur ce nouvel album, un morceau qui redéfinie totalement GHØSTKID. Une ambiance Gothique qui se rapproche de leur identité visuelle, la voix de Sebastian fait parfois penser à celle d’un fantôme, le groupe aime jouer sur les émotions et a rendu ce morceau totalement immersif à la fois dans l’instrumental comme dans la voix, une vraie réussite. On peut aisément imaginer que ce titre aurait pu être interprété par un artiste comme Ghostemane ou pourquoi pas en featuring.
« HOLLYWOOD’S ON FIRE » c’est littéralement le cas avec BLACK CLOUD c’est lourd, presque pesant et parfait pour retourner un pit, les morceaux de ce nouvel album sont vraiment taillés pour le live et ça fait plaisir à entendre. Sur UGLY, les cris du chanteur se font plus viscéraux. MURDER est en featuring avec INHUMAN et est probablement un des plus intéressants sur HOLLYWOOD SUICIDE avec les parties de batterie plus violentes et une ambiance générale plus « bizarre ». DAHLIA commence de façon presque subtile avant d’éclater sur le refrain qui devrait rester ancré dans les mémoires pendant un bon moment après l’écoute. HELENA DRIVE est donc le dernier morceau construit presque comme une histoire de chagrin d’amour et de désespoir, il évoque les thèmes de la douleur et de l’aliénation sociétale qui invite l’auditeur à s’identifier au mal-être dégagé par cette chanson.
Ce nouvel album de GHØSTKID est aussi intéressant à la première écoute qu’aux suivantes, la formation évolue dans l’univers du Metal Moderne en y ajoutant une touche Gothique. Les thématiques abordées sont très actuelles et permettent aux fans/auditeurs de pouvoir s’y retrouver. Hâte de pouvoir découvrir certains de ses titres à Paris le 7 avril prochain en support de Blind Channel à la Machine Du Moulin Rouge.

[ENGLISH VERSION] 4 years after their self-titled debut album, GHØSTKID will be back this Friday 22 March with their second album entitled HOLLYWOOD SUICIDE via Century Media Records. « The biggest problem with art today is that it doesn’t hurt any more », said Sebastian ‘Sushi’ Biesler (GHØSTKID) when promoting the album, so will this new opus hurt? HOLLYWOOD SUICIDE is also the name of the opening track on the album, and needless to say, GHØSTKID hit hard as an opener! Despite the slightly « weak » clean vocals, Sebastian‘s scream is powerful, as is the track itself, which is hard-hitting and full of energy that should hit home live. The next track, S3X, slows the pace a little and this time really brings out the clear vocals, the singer’s voice is poignant, especially on the chorus:

This new track is closer to a Nu-Metal anthem, with a more immersive atmosphere emanating from the singer’s emotions than the energetic Metalcore of the first track, while FSU return to the energy of the opening track, with a chorus strangely reminiscent of Electric Callboy (Sebastian‘s former band). It’s the kind of banger that’ll get the pit going in concert! HEAVY RAIN sees the potential of the guitar parts and bass lines explode, and on the whole album the instrumentals are very good, but particularly well highlighted on this track. The themes are also very strong, with some phrases referring to self-harmed (« TODAY YOUR LIPS TASTE LIKE BROKEN GLASS/I TRIED MY BEST BUT YOUR WORDS KEEP ON CUTTING ME UP »), although this is probably metaphorical, the themes on this new album are particularly heavy with meaning (violence, abuse, suicide…), and this track is no exception to the rule.
VALERIE is one of my favourites on this new album, a track that totally redefines GHØSTKID. The Gothic ambience is very much in keeping with their visual identity, and Sebastian‘s voice is sometimes reminiscent of a ghost. The band like to play on emotions and have made this track totally immersive, both in the instrumental and in the vocals, a real success. It’s easy to imagine that this track could have been performed by an artist like Ghostemane, or why not as a featuring?
« HOLLYWOOD’S ON FIRE » is literally the case with BLACK CLOUD: it’s heavy, almost ponderous and perfect for turning a pit upside down, the tracks on this new album are really cut out for live performance and that’s a pleasure to hear. On UGLY, the singer’s screams become more visceral. MURDER features INHUMAN and is probably one of the most interesting tracks on HOLLYWOOD SUICIDE, with more violent drum parts and a more « bizarre » general atmosphere. DAHLIA starts almost subtly before bursting into a chorus that should stay with you for a while after listening. HELENA DRIVE is the final track, constructed almost as a story of heartbreak and despair, evoking themes of pain and societal alienation that invite the listener to identify with the malaise exuded by this song.
GHØSTKID‘s new album is quite interesting on first listen, as it is on subsequent listens, with the band moving into the world of Modern Metal and adding a touch of Gothic. The themes are very topical, and fans/listeners will be able to relate to them. We can’t wait to hear some of these tracks in Paris on 7 April, in support of Blind Channel at the Machine Du Moulin Rouge.
