[ENGLISH BELOW] 4 ans après leur dernier album The Last Viking, Leaves’ Eyes reviennent avec un nouvel opus intitulé Myths Of Fate, disponible à partir du 22 Mars 2024 et produit par le label AFM Records.
Cet album marque l’arrivée de Andre Nasso à la basse ainsi que Luc Gebhardt à la guitare.
Forged By Fire impressionne immédiatement avec son introduction mélodique et épique qui pourrait être très largement sortie d’un conte viking. Une chanson forgée dans la roche qui présente l’univers dans lequel nous allons être plongés. Puis un appel à la cours plus tard c’est Realm Of Dark Waves qui prends le relai avec plus de douceur mais pas moins de beauté porté par Elina Siirala. Exactement comme Einherjar.
Who Wants To Live Forever impose son allure symphonique et l’assume avec honneur, avec en bonus une vraie question existentielle sur le fait de savoir qui voudrait vraiment vivre pour toujours. Un sujet lourd de réflexion et de sens emmené avec précision et justesse par l’harmonie instrumentale.
Hammer Of The Gods reprends le dessus avec une batterie et un chant guttural appuyé comme pour montrer que le Marteau de Thor sera toujours là pour protéger les auditeurs et les accompagner dans les tourments de la vie.
Avec une grande surprise In Eternity propose une introduction assez tribale sans artifices et d’une simplicité monstrueuse tant elle est belle. Le tout embelli par les chœurs qui résonne dans l’entièreté de nos corps. Une douce pause dans ce périple. C’est clairement mon coup de cœur de cet opus. Puis nous avons Fear The Serpent qui continue sur cette douce simplicité tout en y rajoutant un coté épique qui commençait sérieusement à manquer avec un break digne des plus grands champs de bataille.
Goddess Of The Night a décidé de nous ramener sur la douceur et nous fait passer un agréable moment avec un petit regain de Metal sur la fin. Une Jolie ballade qui pourrait accompagner de nombreux slows. Et un retour a l’envoyeur plus tard c’est Sons Of Triglav qui nous ramène au cœur du sujet avec une introduction digne des plus grands cri de guerre de l’histoire et encore une fois pendant les refrains où j’imagine très facilement le public chanté à l’unisson comme un ralliement de la Horde.
Elder Spirit fait référence à l’importance des esprits dans la mythologie nordique mais clairement manque de puissance et devient redondant par son manque de panache. Une chanson que je serai curieuse de voir en live pour en savoir le rendu et peut-être changer d’avis sur le sujet.
C’est la fin du voyage avec Sail With The Dead qui nous rappelle que c’est aussi un sacré mélange entre le Metal et l’aspect Symphonique et nous offre une conclusion qui me laisse perplexe car j’ai un sentiment d’inachevé sur ce morceau.
Leaves’ Eyes nous propose un album qui alterne chansons douces et brutes mais avec un manque de structure qu’on se perds dans l’écoute. Malgré le choix de certains morceaux, la place proposée dans la tracklist ainsi que la durée de cet album, il n’en reste pas moins une pépite car plus axé sur le côté symphonique.

[ENGLISH VERSION] 4 years after their last album The Last Viking, Leaves’ Eyes return with a new release entitled Myths Of Fate, available from March 22, 2024 and produced by AFM Records.
This album marks the arrival of Andre Nasso on bass and Luc Gebhardt on guitar.
Forged By Fire immediately impresses with its melodic, epic introduction that could very well have come out of a Viking tale. A song forged in rock, it introduces the universe into which we’re about to be plunged. Then, one call to the class later, Realm Of Dark Waves takes over, with more gentleness but no less beauty portrayed by Elina Siirala. Same for Einherjar.
Who Wants To Live Forever imposes its symphonic allure and assumes it with honor, with the added bonus of a real existential question about who would really want to live forever. It’s a thought-provoking and meaningful subject, carried off with precision and accuracy by the instrumental harmony.
Hammer Of The Gods takes over again with drums and guttural vocals, as if to show that Thor’s Hammer will always be there to protect listeners and accompany them through life’s torments.
With great surprise, In Eternity offers a rather tribal, unadorned introduction of monstrous simplicity. The whole thing is embellished by choirs that resonate throughout our bodies. A gentle pause in this journey. It’s clearly my favorite track on this opus. Then we have Fear The Serpent, which continues the sweet simplicity, but adds a touch of epic that’s been seriously lacking, with a break worthy of the greatest battlefields.
Goddess Of The Night has decided to bring us back to gentleness and gives us a pleasant moment with a little Metal boost at the end. A pretty ballad that could accompany many a slow dance. And one return to the sender later, Sons Of Triglav brings us back to the heart of the matter with an introduction worthy of the greatest battle cries in history, and once again during the choruses, where I can easily imagine the audience singing in unison like a Horde rally.
Elder Spirit refers to the importance of spirits in Norse mythology, but clearly lacks power and becomes redundant in its lack of panache. A song I’d be curious to see live to find out how it sounds and perhaps change my mind on the subject.
The journey comes to an end with Sail With The Dead, which reminds us that this is also one hell of a mix between Metal and Symphonic, and offers a conclusion that leaves me with a feeling of unfinished business.
Leaves’ Eyes offers us an album that alternates soft and rough songs, but lacks so much structure that you get lost in the listening. Despite the choice of tracks, the tracklisting and the length of the album, it’s still a nugget with a symphonic edge.
