Beyond The Black : Interview avec Jennifer Haben

Durant cette période de quarantaine, Margot a pu s’entretenir sur Skype avec Jennifer Haben, chanteuse du groupe Beyond The Black. L’occasion de discuter de la situation actuelle et de la sortie de leur nouvel album, HØRIZØNS !

Salut ! Comment ça va ?
Je vais bien ! Malgré la situation actuelle, tout va bien avec ma famille et les autres membres du groupe en ce moment, je suis à la maison et ça va. J’espère que c’est pareil pour toi !

Oui ! Tout va bien aussi. En parlant de ça, est-ce que tu as des conseils pour ne pas devenir fou avec cette situation ?
Je pense que c’est super important de rester positif dans ces moments donc j’écoute beaucoup de chansons Disney, je regarde aussi beaucoup de Disney ahah, c’est quelque chose qui me permet de rester de bonne humeur. Aussi, tout ce qu’on fait en ce moment pour le nouvel album, c’est plus positif que tout ce qu’on a pu faire avant. Dans nos paroles, notamment. C’est quelque chose d’important pour les gens en ce moment d’avoir de la musique et des choses positives pour danser dessus ou faire quoi que ce soit d’autre avec ahah !

Comment ressens-tu l’avenir de l’industrie musicale face à de cette crise ? Beaucoup de concerts ont dû être annulés…
Bien sûr, ça a été très difficile. Pour être honnête, je ne sais pas trop ce que ça va donner, parce qu’il y a tellement de choses auxquelles ont ne réfléchit pas pour l’instant et ça doit changer. Quand tu penses à tous les festivals qui ont dû annuler et qui l’année prochaine n’auront pas la même somme d’argent que d’habitude pour payer les groupes… Avec toutes les tournées qu’on doit annuler, les groupe vont jouer tous en même temps l’année prochaine, et tout le monde ne pourra pas venir… Je pense que les gens devront choisir « Quel groupe je vais aller voir aujourd’hui ? » car tout le monde fera une tournée vers Avril donc je pense que ça fait beaucoup d’éléments dangereux pour l’aspect financier de l’industrie musicale. Je pense qu’on survivra, mais je ne pense pas que tout le monde le pourra, donc je vais le souhaiter à tout le monde mais honnêtement je pense que ce sera une période horrible pour beaucoup de groupes.
Du coup, est-ce que tu penses que la tournée prévue fin 2020 va se faire ?
Je n’en suis pas sûre pour être honnête. On garde les doigts croisés mais tout change d’un jour sur l’autre… Mais on doit toujours prévoir des trucs. On a un plan B à présenter à nos fans pour l’année prochaine si on doit annuler cette tournée, on veut vraiment jouer chaque date, donc on doit tout prévoir dès maintenant. Beaucoup de groupes vont se ruer sur les salles de concert pour savoir s’ils peuvent réserver l’année prochaine et on ne voudrait pas annuler parce qu’on ne peut pas avoir de place pour jouer. Donc on prévoit ce plan B mais on croise toujours les doigts pour la fin de l’année.
Moi aussi, parce que je voulais venir aux concerts !
Ce serait super ! On a une grosse fête de prévue à la fin de l’année, quand tout ça sera redevenu un peu « normal », donc ce serait formidable, mais oui, on verra !

Que penses-tu des différentes sessions live que l’on peut voir sur Instagram, YouTube… ces temps-ci ?
Je pense que c’est formidable ! C’était sympa d’avoir tous ces gens pour nous divertir à la maison les premières semaines. Encore maintenant, beaucoup de gens continuent de le faire et je trouve ça vraiment bien. Mais je pense aussi qu’en ce moment on doit réfléchir à faire de nouvelles choses, pas seulement à travers ces directs sur internet. Peut-être créer de nouveau cinémas, genre un cinéma en voiture, un peu comme d’autres font en ce moment. Je pense que ce genre d’innovations sont importantes pour les gens aussi parce que c’est plus que juste regarder des vidéos à la maison. Tu vois, pour moi c’est bien mais ça pourrait devenir très ennuyeux dans les prochaines semaines et sur toute l’année de juste regarder des directs. Quelque chose doit se passer entre ces lives qui soit un peu différent, mais on verra, il y a tout un tas de personnes créatives qui sont en train de préparer ce genre d’initiatives en ce moment-même !
J’ai vu tes lives sur Instagram, tu as aimé les faire ?
Oui, bien sûr ! C’était une grande première pour moi, je n’avais jamais fait quelque chose comme ça avant et j’étais nerveuse parce que ça n’a rien à voir avec le fait d’être sur scène. Pour moi, quand on est sur scène, on ressent la présence de tous les gens dans la salle et ils réagissent à ce qu’on fait, alors que quand tu fais ça sur internet à travers une vidéo en direct, personne ne réagit, tu ne vois rien, donc tu joues des chansons et… J’ai trouvé ça vraiment étrange et en même temps je me suis dit, ok, si ça fait plaisir à quelqu’un, alors ça me fait plaisir à moi ! Donc c’était bizarre mais également amusant !
Oui je comprends. Par exemple, tu as joué I Won’t Surrender et personne ne connaissait la chanson, tu n’as pas pu voir comment les gens ont réagi.
Oui, d’un côté tu ne sais pas vraiment ce qu’ils en pensent, et d’un autre côté, est-ce que tu veux vraiment le savoir ahah ? C’est un peu des deux mais à ce moment-là la chanson signifiait tellement pour moi que je n’ai pas vraiment réfléchi à comment les gens pourraient la trouver ou s’ils l’aimaient bien ou pas, ou même si c’était ce qu’ils voulaient vraiment. Sur le moment j’ai juste joué pour moi-même et tout allait bien.

J’ai écouté le nouvel album et beaucoup de chansons parlent du courage de vivre et de combattre nos problèmes. Pourquoi avoir choisi de parler de cela et est-ce proche de ce que tu ressens actuellement ?
Quand je réfléchis à quel point j’ai changé pendant les deux ou trois dernières années, mais aussi en 2016 avec tout ce qui était en train d’arriver… J’ai beaucoup changé, mais je réfléchis aussi beaucoup au sens de la vie évidemment, au sens que ça a pour moi. Je décide tous les jours de ce qui est bon pour moi et personne d’autre ne le décide à ma place. Je pense que le plus important c’est de rester positif, pas seulement en ce moment, c’est la raison qui fait qu’on a changé, qu’on est plus positifs, de manière générale on parle de plus de choses positives comme sur You’re Not Alone et Out Of The Ashes, ou « to break out of Misery » (se sortir de la détresse) … A chaque fois c’est un peu comme essayer de voir la lumière au bout du tunnel et se diriger droit vers cette découverte positive. C’est quelque chose que je fais personnellement dans ma vie.

Pourquoi avoir choisi le titre Horizons pour symboliser ce concept ? Est-ce que ce mot a une signification particulière pour toi ?
Oui, c’est définitivement l’idée qu’on voulait changer un peu, changer notre style musical aussi. Les albums précédents étaient plus symphoniques que cet album, celui-ci a un peu plus d’éléments électroniques mais a aussi plus de travail sur l’atmosphère. C’est quelque chose qu’on savait à l’avance, que l’on voulait expérimenter un peu et visiter de nouveaux horizons. C’est la raison pour laquelle on l’a pris pour en faire notre titre, parce qu’on sait aussi que les horizons peuvent être très différents les uns des autres et notre musique est super différente dans le style que nous lui donnons. Du coup oui, je pense qu’Horizons était le meilleur mot pour décrire ce qu’on recherchait pour cet album.

C’est déjà votre quatrième album. Avec cette évolution, qu’est-ce que tu penses de vos tout premiers morceaux en comparaison ?
Je pense que nous nos albums étaient solides, on a fait beaucoup de choses, on a toutes ces chansons maintenant et j’en suis super fière. Mais je pense aussi qu’on doit changer un peu, on doit faire en sorte que notre musique colle davantage à ce que l’on ressent en ce moment, tu vois, on change, tout le monde change, donc la musique change aussi. Je pense que des groupes comme Nightwish n’ont pas vraiment besoin de changer parce qu’ils sont les meilleurs dans ce genre musical, ils se doivent de correspondre un peu à ce que les fans attendent, ils ont fait la même chose pendant des années et ils ne ressentaient pas forcément le besoin de changer, même s’ils peuvent effectivement faire des choses différentes ! Je n’ai pas écouté leurs dernières musiques. Mais avec Beyond The Black, on a toujours présenté beaucoup de styles différents et je pense que changer notre style musical pour qu’il ressemble à ce qu’on est sur le moment, c’est la bonne façon de dire « on va montrer aux gens à quel point de nos vies nous sommes en ce moment ». Tu comprends ce que je veux dire ?

Oui, complètement, les gens évoluent et donc leur musique aussi. Comment est arrivé le duo avec Elize Ryd ? Comment c’était de travailler avec elle ?
On envisageait de faire une tournée ensemble et on a fait des concerts en invité pour eux, 4 concerts en Finlande. Donc on s’est rencontrés là et on a vu qu’on s’aimait beaucoup, donc on s’est dit « faisons ça ensemble ! ». Quand j’ai découvert qu’ils étaient en train d’écrire un album aussi j’ai pensé « On pourrait peut-être faire quelque chose ensemble » parce que j’aime beaucoup sa voix. C’est quelque chose que je voulais vraiment faire, ce n’est pas juste pour avoir un nom marquant en ce moment dans ce style et ce genre de musique. Je voulais que cette chanson soit aussi bien que possible et je savais qu’Elize ferait un travail formidable. Elle était malade quand on a enregistré la chanson ! Mais c’était seulement trois jours avant qu’on doive tout terminer, donc elle a dû le faire malgré tout ! Mais elle a vraiment fait un travail formidable et je suis super contente du résultat. Travailler avec elle, c’est fun ahah, je pense que ce que je connais d’elle maintenant c’est que c’est quelqu’un de très drôle, peut-être un peu chaotique, et elle dort super longtemps ! C’est quelque chose que j’aime beaucoup chez elle aussi parce que je ne connais personne qui dort aussi longtemps. Je pensais être quelqu’un qui dormait longtemps, mais elle me bat de loin !
Du coup, tu voudrais performer cette chanson avec elle pendant votre tournée ensemble ?
Ce serait génial ! Je ne suis pas sûre que ce soit possible mais on adorerait le faire.

Le premier single d’Horizons à être sorti est Misery, et c’est la chanson qui a le plus de sonorités pop, pourquoi avez-vous choisi cette chanson pour représenter en premier votre album ?
Parce que ça ne représente pas l’album, ahah ! Là-dessus je dois te dire qu’on a commencé à écrire notre album l’été dernier et je pense que la première chanson que l’on a terminée était Misery, parce qu’on voulait changer quelque chose, c’était notre pensée du moment. C’est toujours difficile de changer quand on ne modifie que quelques détails tu sais, donc je pense que le plus important pour nous c’était de nous libérer de tout ce qu’on avait fait auparavant et de ne pas penser que « on crée une chanson qui devra absolument être sur le prochain album ». On a juste écrit quelque chose de totalement différent de ce qu’on a fait avant, pour nous libérer l’esprit. On ne savait pas que l’on prendrait vraiment cette chanson pour être un single ni même pour être sur l’album, on ne s’en doutait pas du tout, on a vraiment juste créé un truc pour s’alléger l’esprit. Au final, la chanson vient d’une idée que j’ai eue avec Chris, on l’a appelée notre idée Disney, parce que ça sonnait beaucoup comme un Disney au départ et qu’on l’a fait pour le fun, on aime beaucoup Disney tous les deux. Ensuite, quand on s’est dit qu’on ferait quelque chose de différent, on s’est rendu compte qu’on avait réalisé une mélodie sympa, différente, et ça nous a vraiment libéré l’esprit comme je le disais auparavant. Si on a pris cette chanson comme premier single c’est parce que l’on voulait tenter de voir si ça pouvait aussi libérer l’esprit de nos fans. On a toujours utilisé différents styles de musiques dans nos albums, mais je ne pense pas que tout le monde le sache. La plupart des gens ne connaissent que nos singles et ils sont un peu tous similaires. Avec cette chanson, les gens savent que d’accord, ce groupe fait beaucoup de choses différentes, Beyond The Black ce n’est pas juste un seul style de musique. On savait depuis bien longtemps que beaucoup de monde détesterait cette chanson parce qu’elle sonne trop pop, donc ce n’est pas une surprise pour nous. On était vraiment dans l’idée qu’avec ce single, les gens pourraient comprendre qu’on a changé un peu et qu’ils sont aussi libres que nous dans leur tête pour tout ce qui pourra arriver plus tard.
C’était un peu comme un test pour vos fans !
Oui, peut-être, on peut voir ça comme ça ! Beaucoup de monde a apprécié la chanson et a pu la voir comme elle est, une bonne chanson, mais il y a aussi beaucoup de monde qui ne partage pas cet avis et qui dit « ça sonne beaucoup trop pop pour moi ! » et c’est quelque chose que je déteste énormément. En fait, c’est également un peu comme un doigt d’honneur à tous ces rageux qui disent tout le temps qu’on sonne trop pop. Donc voilà, on vous réalise une chanson pop juste pour vous les gars !

C’est vrai qu’il y a beaucoup de styles différents sur vos albums. Par exemple, il y a des chansons acoustiques avec du piano et du violoncelle, on a pu le voir avec Breeze sur le précédent album et maintenant avec I Won’t Surrender, aimes-tu particulièrement ce genre de chansons ?
Bien sûr ! Quand je compose de la musique, j’écris surtout des ballades. Mon instrument principal est le piano, alors c’est plus facile d’écrire des ballades sur un piano que des riffs ! Ça ne peut pas vraiment se faire, ça. Je joue aussi de la guitare mais ça dépend vraiment de quelle sorte de chanson je veux écrire. J’aime énormément les chansons au piano depuis que je suis super jeune. Mais j’adorais également les choses plus heavy. C’est aussi une des raisons qui font que l’on utilise plusieurs styles avec Beyond The Black. Quand j’avais mon premier groupe, à 9 ans, je chantais des chansons comme I Will Always Love You de Whitney Houston, mais aussi du Amy Winehouse ou encore du AC/DC. J’aime un peu tout donc c’était toujours très différent et ça montre toutes les différentes formes d’expression que je peux avoir en moi, j’adore ça.

Quelle est ta chanson préférée de ce nouvel album ?
Ça change de temps à autres parce que toutes ces chansons sont mes bébés, nos bébés, et c’est difficile d’en choisir juste une. J’ai dit à beaucoup de monde que c’était I Won’t Surrender, mais en ce moment ça change pour Human ahah, parce qu’on fait beaucoup de choses autour de cette chanson en ce moment, ce sera notre prochain single et on va sortir une vidéo avec. Tu aimes de plus en plus une chanson quand tu crées des images pour aller avec, et c’était déjà l’une de mes favorites avant, alors ça l’est encore plus maintenant.
Human est également une de mes chansons favorites, j’ai hâte de voir la vidéo !
Oui, j’ai super hâte aussi ! Je n’ai encore rien vu pour le moment, juste la partie que j’ai tournée ! Je ne tiens plus en place.
Est-ce que vous avez tourné la vidéo avant la crise ?
Non, on a décidé de l’enregistrer vendredi dernier. On voulait réaliser des vidéos pour Golden Pariah et Wounded Healer aussi, mais finalement on a pensé que c’était mieux de ne pas le faire. Mais pour les principaux singles d’un album tu te dois de faire une vidéo pour aller avec : on passe aussi sur des chaînes télé, etc… donc on ne peut pas se contenter de jouer la chanson sans images. Ce n’était pas une décision facile mais on l’a fait, avec les masques, la distance de sécurité et tout ça, et ouais vraiment qu’on se le dise, ce n’est pas facile parce que c’est notre métier, on se doit d’avancer et de décider ce que l’on doit faire ou pas. On avait vraiment une équipe réduite et on a bien fait attention à tout même si ça ne nous a pas semblé super naturel. C’est notre métier et oui, on se doit d’avancer malgré tout.
Ça doit être un peu bizarre de tourner dans ces conditions.
Oui. En Allemagne c’était possible de sortir donc tout était légal, mais tu te dois de décider en toi-même si c’est nécessaire ou non. Dans ma vie privée, je ne fais pas ça du tout, sortir, peut-être même aller voir quelqu’un, tout ça, même si ici c’est autorisé maintenant. On peut aller visiter quelqu’un d’autre, les gens peuvent se rencontrer, mais je préfère ne pas le faire si je n’y suis pas obligée. Donc j’y fais vraiment attention. Mais quand ça concerne mon groupe et les obligations professionnelles, je pense que c’est quelque chose de nécessaire.

Est-ce que vous avez créé des choses chacun de votre côté durant cette quarantaine ?
On a fait tout ce qu’on a faire avant la crise et on a tout terminé à la fin du mois de mars. J’ai juste fait des enregistrements de dernière minute au début du mois de mars et après il ne nous restait plus qu’à tout regrouper ensemble, donc on était tout bon et prêts pour la quarantaine.

Lorsque vous avez composé cet album, est-ce que vous composiez tous ensemble ou chacun créait des parties de son côté ?
C’était un peu différent cette fois-ci parce que pour la première fois on a eu des espèces de réunions de groupe. D’habitude notre méthode c’est plutôt ça : j’écris avec Chris ou avec Stefan, puis on va voir notre producteur et on essaie de voir ce qui rend le mieux, ce qui marche bien et ce qu’on préfère. C’est aussi quelque chose qu’on a fait là, mais on avait en plus ces petites sessions avec nous tous. Misery est une chanson que l’on a tous créée ensemble dans ces moments-là, de même pour Paralyzed, et les deux sont sorties sur cet album donc je pense que c’est quelque chose qu’on va recommencer à faire pour le prochain album aussi. Tu vois, en ce moment, la nouvelle génération apprécie davantage, par exemple, d’envoyer aux autres des idées de chansons et de travailler dessus ensuite par ordinateur. On le fait aussi car on n’habite pas tous dans la même ville, mais on essaie de se réunir autant qu’on peut.

D’ailleurs j’ai remarqué que même s’il n’y avait pas de scream cette fois, Chris a un rôle assez important avec la voix, comme dans Marching On par exemple, c’est intéressant !
Oui, effectivement ! Il a beaucoup travaillé l’année dernière. Donc depuis l’album précédent il travaille beaucoup sa voix parce qu’il voulait chanter et ça me fait super plaisir car il a vraiment un joli timbre et une chaleur dans la voix que j’adore, je pense qu’il peut faire beaucoup de belles choses et je suis super contente du résultat dans cet album.

Hi! How are you doing?
I’m ok! With my family and my band members everything is okay with the situation right now, I’m at home and everything is fine and I hope it is for you as well!

Yes, it is! Everything is ok. Speaking of that, do you have any tips for not becoming crazy with this situation?
I think it’s super important to stay positive at these moments so I listen to a lot of Disney songs and I watch a lot of Disney movies ahah ! This is something that is keeping me positive and all the stuff that we are doing with this new album is more positive than what we ever did before. I mean, we talk more about positive stuff in our lyrics so, yeah, this is something that is very important for the people right now to have music and positive things to dance and to do everything ahah!

How do you feel about the future of the music industry because of this crisis? Many shows have been cancelled…
It’s been super difficult of course. I’m not sure how this will continue to be honest, because I think there are a lot of things that we are not thinking about right now that will need to change. When you think about all the festivals that had to cancel, and next year they will not have, like, the normal kind of money that they normally have to pay the bands… With the tours we have to cancel, bands are touring next year at the same time and there will not be all the people… I think people will have to decide “what favorite band do I watch today?” because everyone is touring next year in April and stuff so I think there are a lot of stuff that is dangerous for the financial things in the music business. I think we will survive, but I don’t think that everyone will, so I will wish for it but to be honest I think it will be a horrible time for a lot of bands.
So, do you think your tour in the end of 2020 will happen?
I’m not sure to be honest. We are still keeping our fingers crossed but everything is changing from day to day… But you still have to plan, we have a plan B for next year to tell our fans if we have to cancel, we want to play every single show, so we have to plan that right now, because a lot of bands are going to the locations right now and they are asking if they can play next year. We don’t want to cancel because we don’t get the location so we are planning a plan B but we are really still keeping our fingers crossed for the end of the year.
Me too because I want to come to the shows!
That would be great! We have a big party at the end of the year, when all of this will be some kind of “more normal”, so it would be amazing, but yeah let’s see!

What do you think about the different live sessions that we can see on Instagram, YouTube… these days?
I think this is amazing! For the first weeks it was great to have these people to entertain you at home and still a lot of people are doing that, this is really good. But I think at the moment we have to think about new things, not just doing that stream stuff, maybe doing other cinemas, like a car cinema thing, like what others are doing right now. I think these kinds of innovative things are also important for the people and this is not just watching live streams at home. You know, for me, this is really great but it can also be really boring during the next weeks and the all year to just watch streams. Something has to happen in between those live streams a bit different, but let’s see, there are a lot of creative people out there that are really planning something like this right now.
I saw your live streams on Instagram, did you enjoy to do them?
Yeah, yes! It was different for me, I never did something like this before and I was nervous because it is not like being on stage. For me while being on stage you feel the people that are in this room and they are reacting to what you do, and when you do that on the internet in a live stream, nobody is reacting, you can’t see anything, so you play your songs and… it felt strange but also I thought that okay, if somebody is happy that I’m doing that, I’m enjoying it. So, it was strange but also funny!
I understand, for example you played I Won’t Surrender and nobody knew the song, so you can’t see how they reacted.
Yeah, on one side you don’t really know what they think about it, but on the other side, do you really want to know ahah? So it can be both, but on this situation the song meant so much to me that I didn’t really think about how people could find it, or if they liked, or even if they really wanted that but at this moment I just played for me and everything was fine.

I listened to the album and a lot of songs are talking about the courage of living, to fight your problems. Why did you choose that and is it close to your current feelings?
When I think about how I have changed during the last two or three years, and in 2016 because a lot of stuff was happening… I changed a lot and I also think about the meaning of life of course, and what is my personal meaning of this, and I decide everyday what for me is right and not anyone else is deciding. I think the most important thing is to stay positive, not just at these times, and that’s the reason why we changed a bit from sad to moments with a little bit of hope in it, that we are normally talking about more mainly positives things like on You’re Not Alone and from Out Of The Ashes, break out of Misery. This is all some kind of seeing the light on the other side and going straight to that positive find, and this is something that I personally do in my life.

Why did you choose the title Horizons to symbolize this concept? Does this word have a special meaning for you?
Yeah, it definitely was the point that we wanted to change a bit, and also our musically style. The previous albums were more symphonic than this album, this one has a bit more electronic style but also more atmospheric stuff and this is something that we knew before, that we wanted to experiment a bit and to get through new horizons. So, this is the reason why we did it as our title because we also know that horizons can be super different and our music is super different in this kind of style that we do, so, yeah I think horizons was the best to describe what we were searching for this album.

This is already your fourth album. With this evolution, what do you think about your very early stuff comparing to now?
I think they are all strong albums and we really did a lot of stuff, because we have all these songs and I’m super proud of that, but I also think that sometimes you have to change a bit, to make it more like what you feel right now, you know, you are changing, people are changing, so the music is changing as well. I think bands like Nightwish don’t need to change you know, because they rule this game, they have to be what the fans are expecting, they did years of their stuff and they didn’t absolutely need to change even if they can be different of course ! I don’t know about their last stuff. But for Beyond The Black we always showed a lot of different styles and I think that for us it was the right way to say “we will show the people at what point we are right now”, in changing musically as well, as what we feel right now, you now what I mean ?

Yeah totally, people are evolving and so is their music. How came the duet with Elize Ryd and how was it to work with her?
We were thinking about touring together and we did special guest shows, 4 shows in Finland with them. So, we met each other and we saw that we liked each other so we said “let’s do that together!”. When I find out that they were doing an album too I thought “let’s maybe do something together” because I really love her voice. This is something I really wanted, that’s not just a name that is big in this kind of music and genre, I want this song to be as good as it can be and I knew that Elize would make an amazing job. She was sick when she was recording that! And it was tree days before we had to finish! So, she had to do it anyway! But she did an amazing, amazing job and I’m super happy about the result. Working with her is funny ahah, because I think that what I know about her now is that she is super funny, maybe a bit chaotic, and she sleeps very long! This is something that I really love about her as well because I don’t know anyone that is sleeping so long, I am sleeping long I thought, but she is sleeping longer definitely!
So you would like to do the song together during the tour?
It would be amazing! I’m not sure if we can do it but we really would like to do it.

The first single that came out from Horizons is Misery and this is the song that has the more pop vibes in it, so why did you choose this one for representing your album first?
Because it is not representing the album ahah! With this, I had to tell you that we started writing this album in summer last year and I think that the first song which was finished was Misery, because we wanted to change something, that was in our minds. It’s always difficult to change when you change just a bit you know, I think that the most important thing for us was to free ourselves from all of this things that we did before and not thinking that “this is a song that is coming and that we will take to be on this album”. We just wrote something that is just totally different to what we did before, to free our minds. We didn’t really know that we would really take this song for a single and all of this, we really didn’t know that, we just made something different to free our minds. And finally, this song was created out of an idea that I had with Chris, we called it our Disney idea, because it was really like Disney and it was for fun that we did this, we both like Disney. Then, when we said we were doing a different song, we just found out that it’s a great melody what we did there, it’s different, and it freed our minds like I said before. If we took that as our first single it’s because we wanted to try out if it’s freeing the minds of our fans as well. We always did on our albums different kinds of styles, but I think that not everyone knows it. A lot of people know just the singles that we did and they are kind of similar, with this song, the people knew that ok, they are doing a lot of stuff, Beyond The Black is not just one style. I knew that a lot of people would hate that song because it’s too poppy. We knew that before so this is nothing that surprise us. We were really into that people could understand with the first single that we changed a bit and they are free in their minds as well to everything that is coming next.
It was like a test for your fans!
Yeah maybe, you can see it like that! A lot of people liked the song and could see it as it is, a good song, and there are a lot of people that are not seeing this as a good song and they are saying “oh no it’s too poppy for me!” and this is something that I really hate. So, this is also something like a middle finger song for the haters, that are always saying that we are too poppy. Okay, we do a poppy song just for you guys!

Yeah, there are a lot of different styles on the albums. For example, there are acoustic songs with piano and cello like Breeze on the previous album, and now it’s I Won’t Surrender, do you particularly like this type of songs?
Of course! I mostly write ballads when I write songs. My main instrument is piano so it’s easier to write ballads on a piano than to write riffs with a piano! you can’t really do it. I play guitar as well but it depends on what kind of songs I want to write. I really love piano songs since I’m super young. But I was super into heavy things too. That is also the reason why we do some different styles in Beyond The Black as well. When I had my first band at 9 years old, I sang songs like Whitney Houston, I Will Always Love You, and also Amy Winehouse and also AC/DC, I love everything so it was super different and it shows a lot of expressions that I have inside of me so I love it.

What is your favorite song on this album?
This is changing sometimes because all of these songs are my babies, our babies, and it’s difficult to choose one but I told a lot of people that it’s I Won’t Surrender. But it’s changing to Human at the moment ahah, because we do a lot for that song right now, it will be our next single with a music video, and you get more and more into that song when you create picture with it, and it was one of my favorite before as well, so it’s just getting more now.
Human is one of my favorites too, I can’t wait to see the video!
Yeah I can’t wait as well! I haven’t seen anything right now, I just saw what I did! I’m super excited.
Did you make the video before the crisis?
No. We decided to record it last Friday, but we wanted to do some videos for Golden Pariah and Wounded Healer as well and finally decided not to do that. But for the main single of the album you have to have a video because we do also TV spot and stuff and you can’t just play the song. This is something that was not easy to decide but we did it, with masks and distance and everything, and yeah you have to say it, it’s not easy because it’s your job and you have to move on and to decide : are you doing this or not ? It was really a small team and we took care of everything that is not really normal, but we had to do this, it’s our job and we have to move on.
It should be kind of weird with these conditions.
Yes. In Germany it was possible so everything was legal you know, but you personally also have to decide if this is necessary or not. In private, I don’t do anything like that, to go out and maybe meet somebody or stuff, even if you can do it right now, to meet another household, one household can meet another household, but I don’t do that if I don’t have to. So, I will take care of that but when it comes out of my band and necessaries, I think this is something that we really have to do.

Did you create stuff separately during the quarantine?
We did everything we had to before the crisis and finished everything at the end of March. I just did some last recordings at the beginning of March and then we just had to put everything together, so we were good and ready for the lockdown.

When you were composing the album, were you creating the songs all together or was everyone creating some stuff separately?
It’s different this time because for the first time we had something like all band sessions. We normally do like, I write with Chris or with Stefan and then we go to our producers and try to figure out what is the best, what is working well and what we like the most. This is something that we did as well, but we also had some band sessions. Misery was one of this band session song, and Paralyzed, both came out on that album so that was something that we really will do for the next album as well. You know, these times the young generation for example is more into sending each other songs ideas and working on that on computer and stuff. This is something that we do as well because we are not living in one city all together, but we try to come together as much as we can.

I saw that even if there are now growls or scream, Chris has a big part in the vocals, like on Marching On, that’s interesting!
Yes, he is! He practiced a lot last year! So from the previous album to this album, he practiced a lot because he wanted to sing, and I’m super happy about it because he has a really great tone or warmth in his voice that I really love. I think he can do a lot of great things and I am super happy about the result we have on this album.
