Muse est enfin de retour ! Dixième album studio du trio britannique, The Wow! Signal marque une nouvelle étape dans une carrière qui n’a jamais cessé de se réinventer.
Son titre fait référence au célèbre « Wow! Signal », un signal radio capté depuis l’espace en 1977 et longtemps considéré comme l’un des candidats les plus intrigants à une possible origine extraterrestre. Une référence qui annonce immédiatement le retour de Muse vers une esthétique cosmique, entre science-fiction, immensité spatiale et quête d’inconnu.
Après les dystopies et la politique, Matt Bellamy (frontman) délaisse en grande partie ces thématiques pour livrer l’album le plus personnel de toute la discographie du groupe. Amour, rupture, santé mentale, quête de sens… derrière son habillage futuriste et ses explorations sonores, The Wow! Signal raconte avant tout la nécessité de donner un sens au chaos qui l’entoure.
Musicalement, Muse pousse encore plus loin cette volonté d’expérimenter qui fait sa force depuis plus de vingt-cinq ans. Electro, disco, metal moderne, rock progressif, space rock, pop… tout cohabite avec une cohérence parfaite. Plus qu’un simple nouvel album, The WOW! Signal ressemble à une véritable renaissance.
The Dark Forest ouvre The Wow! Signal de la meilleure des manières. Véritable voyage spatial retro-prog, le morceau évolue constamment au fil de plusieurs mouvements et annonce immédiatement les ambitions de l’album. Une entrée en matière audacieuse qui prouve que Muse n’a rien perdu de sa créativité.
Avec Nightshift Superstar, changement d’ambiance. Le groupe plonge dans du disco-electro fortement inspiré de la French Touch, avec des influences évidentes de Justice. Impossible de ne pas souligner l’incroyable ligne de basse de Chris Wolstenholme, groovy et irrésistible, qui rappelle par moments le côté funk de Panic Station. Un morceau audacieux et dans l’air du temps qui prouve que Muse peut encore surprendre là où on ne l’attend pas.
Premier véritable coup émotionnel de l’album, Shimmering Scars évoque une relation qui s’effondre malgré une volonté désespérée de la sauver. Matt Bellamy y expose toute sa vulnérabilité, hanté par la peur de ne jamais retrouver ce qu’il est en train de perdre.

Cryogen fait ensuite office de retour aux années 2000. Son riff évoque immédiatement Plug In Baby, tandis que son outro particulièrement explosive rappelle pourquoi Muse reste aussi redoutable lorsqu’il s’agit de monter en puissance. Un morceau solide et terriblement efficace.
S’ensuit Be With You, qui à sa sortie avait malheureusement été accueilli assez froidement. Le morceau monte lentement en intensité avant de déboucher sur une explosion finale qui procure une véritable sensation d’élévation. Les paroles parlent du besoin de changement, de trouver quelque chose de plus grand que soi. Matt Bellamy expliquait d’ailleurs en interview avec NME avoir réalisé que, plus qu’une quelconque croyance, c’était peut-être son public qui représentait cette force supérieure dans sa vie. Cette lecture transforme le morceau en une déclaration particulièrement touchante adressée aux fans.

Hexagons est sans doute l’un des sommets du disque. Entre electro retro et space rock prog, le titre aux airs de Space Dementia confirme une fois de plus la maîtrise du groupe dans ce registre.
Ce dernier transitionne vers The Sickness In You and I, qui change radicalement d’atmosphère. Plus nerveux, le morceau repose sur un riff à la AC/DC particulièrement efficace, qui s’alourdit au fil de la musique. Le morceau décrit cette étrange phase d’une relation en train de mourir où l’attirance physique semble refaire surface, donnant l’illusion que tout peut redevenir comme avant, alors que les véritables blessures restent intactes.
L’outro du titre laisse place à Unravelling ; on retrouve d’ailleurs des samples du morceau en plein milieu de The Sickness In You and I, ce qui renforce davantage la cohérence de l’ensemble. Premier single dévoilé au printemps 2025, Unravelling donnait le ton de cette nouvelle direction artistique. Le côté metal amorcé sur The Will Of The People (2022) avec Won’t Stand Down et Kill Or Be Killed se transforme ici en véritable morceau metalcore, avec une production beaucoup plus contemporaine.
La surprise arrive ensuite avec Hush, en featuring avec Ellie Goulding ; une collaboration qui fonctionne incroyablement bien. Avec ses sonorités pop rock aux pointes d’EDM et ses mélodies, le morceau reste définitivement en tête. Au cœur du tumulte d’une relation à bout de souffle, Hush exprime ce besoin de s’extraire du chaos, ne serait-ce qu’un instant, pour retrouver un peu de calme et reprendre son souffle.

Ce besoin d’apaisement se dissout progressivement dans Space Debris, magnifique conclusion de l’album. Les dernières paroles de Hush semblent littéralement se perdre dans l’immensité de l’espace. La musique installe une sensation de vide, de dérive, tandis que le chant monte en intensité jusqu’à presque engloutir le reste de la musique. C’est sans aucun doute le morceau le plus personnel et le plus vulnérable que Matt Bellamy n’ait jamais écrit.

Au-delà de ses qualités musicales, The Wow! Signal impressionne par sa cohérence. Chaque morceau s’enchaîne naturellement, chaque ambiance semble répondre à la précédente, comme si l’album ne formait qu’une seule grande traversée émotionnelle. Un véritable exutoire cathartique. Cela se ressent énormément dans les intentions comme dans les paroles : Matt Bellamy se livre complètement et semble trouver refuge dans la musique.
La production, assurée par Dan Lancaster, apporte quant à elle un souffle nouveau. Tout paraît plus massif, plus moderne, sans jamais perdre ce côté raw qui a toujours fait l’identité du groupe. Il insuffle une fraîcheur qui fait énormément de bien à Muse, qui n’a sans doute jamais aussi bien sonné.
L’écriture participe elle aussi à la réussite de l’ensemble. Les morceaux s’enchaînent avec une fluidité presque cinématographique (comme Muse a l’habitude de faire) et construisent un véritable fil narratif, sans jamais sacrifier la diversité des styles, ce qui renforce cette impression de voyage émotionnel.
Surtout, The Wow! Signal confirme que Muse refuse toujours de se reposer sur ses acquis. Le trio continue d’évoluer, d’expérimenter et de se réinventer, et c’est précisément cette capacité à embrasser des styles toujours plus variés qui fait sa force depuis ses débuts (n’en déplaise aux soi-disant puristes restés bloqués en 2001).
The Wow! Signal est bien plus qu’un excellent album : c’est une véritable renaissance artistique, sincère, ambitieuse et profondément humaine. Très certainement l’un des meilleurs disques de toute la carrière de Muse.

Muse are finally back! Their tenth studio album, The Wow! Signal, marks another step in a career that has never stopped reinventing itself.
The title refers to the famous powerful radio burst detected in space in 1977, long considered one of the most intriguing possible signs of extraterrestrial origin. A reference that immediately sets the tone for a return to a cosmic aesthetic, blending science fiction, vast space, and a sense of searching for the unknown.
After dystopia and politics, Matt Bellamy (frontman) largely steps away from those familiar themes to deliver what is arguably the most personal album in the band’s entire discography. Love, breakup, mental health, existential searching… beneath its futuristic shell and experimentation, The Wow! Signal is ultimately about trying to make sense of the chaos around him.
Musically, Muse push their experimental instincts even further — something that has defined them for over twenty-five years. Electro, disco, modern metal, progressive rock, space rock, pop… everything coexists here with near-perfect cohesion. More than just a new album, The Wow! Signal feels like a true rebirth.
The Dark Forest opens The Wow! Signal in the best possible way. A retro-prog space journey, the track constantly evolves through multiple movements and immediately sets the scale of the album. An ambitious opening that proves Muse haven’t lost any of their creativity.
With Nightshift Superstar, the mood shifts. The band dives into disco-electro heavily inspired by French touch, with clear influences from Justice. It’s impossible not to highlight Chris Wolstenholme’s bassline — groovy and irresistible — sometimes recalling the funkier side of Panic Station. A bold track that proves Muse can still surprise when you least expect it.
The first real emotional punch of the album comes with Shimmering Scars, which portrays a relationship falling apart despite a desperate attempt to save it. Matt Bellamy lays bare his vulnerability here, haunted by the fear of losing something he may never get back.

Cryogen then brings things back to the 2000s. Its riff instantly recalls Plug In Baby, while its explosive outro is a reminder of how powerful Muse still are when they go for full impact. A solid and excellent track.
Next comes Be With You, which was unfortunately met with a fairly cold reception upon release. The track slowly builds before erupting into a powerful, uplifting climax. Lyrically, it deals with the need for change and finding something greater than oneself. Matt Bellamy also explained in an interview with NME that, rather than religion or God, it is ultimately his fanbase that has become that higher force in his life — a reading that turns the song into a deeply emotional message to the fans.

Hexagons is easily one of the album’s highlights. Blending retro electro and space rock prog, the track carries echoes of Space Dementia, confirming once again the band’s mastery of this kind of atmosphere.
It then transitions into The Sickness In You and I, which shifts into a more aggressive atmosphere. Built around a sharp AC/DC-style riff, the track gradually becomes heavier as it unfolds. It explores that strange phase of a dying relationship where physical attraction briefly returns, creating the illusion that things might still be fixed, even though the deeper wounds remain.
The track flows seamlessly into Unravelling — with samples from Unravelling already appearing within The Sickness In You and I, reinforcing the album’s cohesion. First released in spring 2025, Unravelling set the tone for this new artistic direction. The metal edge hinted at on The Will Of The People (2022) with Won’t Stand Down and Kill Or Be Killed is pushed further here into full metalcore territory, backed by a much more modern production.
The surprise comes with Hush, featuring Ellie Goulding — a collaboration that works surprisingly well. With its pop-rock sound mixed with touches of EDM and strong melodies, it’s an instantly catchy track. At the heart of a collapsing relationship, Hush expresses the need to step away from the chaos, even just for a moment, to breathe again.

That need for calm slowly dissolves into Space Debris, the album’s closing track. The final lines of Hush seem to drift out into the vastness of space itself. The music creates a sense of emptiness and drifting, while the vocals gradually build until they nearly swallow the entire soundscape. This is without doubt the most personal and vulnerable performance Matt Bellamy has ever written.

Beyond its musical qualities, The Wow! Signal stands out for its cohesion. Every track flows naturally into the next, with each atmosphere responding to the one before it, as if the album were one continuous emotional journey. A deeply cathartic record, it feels like Matt Bellamy is fully opening up through music as a form of release.
The production, handled by Dan Lancaster, brings a fresh energy throughout. Everything sounds bigger, more modern, without losing that raw side that has always defined the band. It gives Muse a new sense of vitality — they have never sounded this good.
The songwriting also contributes to the album’s strength. The tracks unfold with a near-cinematic flow (as Muse have always done), forming a narrative thread without sacrificing stylistic diversity, reinforcing the sense of an emotional journey.
Most importantly, The Wow! Signal confirms once again that Muse refuse to rest on their laurels. The trio continue to evolve, experiment, and reinvent themselves, and that willingness to embrace such a wide range of styles has always been one of their greatest strengths (no matter what the so-called purists stuck in 2001 might say).
The Wow! Signal is far more than just a great album: it’s a sincere, ambitious, and deeply human artistic rebirth. Quite possibly one of the best records in Muse’s entire career.
