[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] On avait découvert Games We Play sur scène à Paris avec All Time Low il y’a un peu plus d’un an! Aujourd’hui, il sort son premier album Life’s Going Great via Fueled By Ramen.
C’est avec The End que va commencer ce premier opus. Exactement le genre de titres qui sent bon l’été, la fin de l’année sur le campus US (de préférence) et les teenage movies américains à la American Pie. Ce morceau évoque la superficialité de certaines relations et de la société ( « I know what she wants.A guy who drives a new Rolls every week and I don’t have a car »). Typical Me va rester dans la même vibe très Pop-Punk adolescente voir Punk-Rock très adolescent sur la thématique des mauvaises habitudes avant d’enchaîner sur Girl Shaped Crater, un titre qui va se rapprocher le plus d’une ballade que Emmyn dédie à sa femme, Dani , il va la comparer à un cratère en forme de fille mais également lui chanter qu’elle est sa religion (Homme Capable, vous disiez?)
Oh So Blue revient sur ce que les premiers morceaux proposaient à savoir quelque chose de plus rythmé tout comme Petty Enemy qui sera à coup sûr repris à plein poumons par les fans pendant les concerts. Peu étonnant donc que ce titre ai été choisi comme single promo et semble être une Vengeance Song parfaite avant un petit Interlude où apparaît Pete Wentz de Fall Out Boy. Emmyn annonce qu’il va intégrer un solo de batterie à Pete par téléphone qui semble peu convaincu mais finalement l’interlude va effectivement se transformer en Drum Solo avant la ballade too young. Encore une fois on découvre toute la sensibilité et les émotions transmises par la voix de Emmyn sur un morceau qui semble une fois de plus dédier à sa femme, le musicien ayant évoqué sur ses réseaux sociaux qu’ils s’étaient mariés très jeunes et s’était séparés pour revenir ensemble quelques temps après. Cette chanson semble évoquer cette rupture douloureuse.
La deuxième partie de l’album est en grande majorité composée de morceaux qui ralentissent largement le rythme de la première, des morceaux assez intéressants qui évoquent le fait de vouloir être quelqu’un d’autre (Pretty Boy) ou encore la dépression et le manque de confiance en soi (Round&Round) avant que la rythmique de l’album ne change encore une fois avec le plus énergique Naked. All My Untalented Friends évoque encore une fois la superficialité mais cette fois-ci de l’industrie musicale et permet à l’album de reprendre un rythme plus sympa avant de finir sur le titre qui donne son nom à l’album, Life’s Going Great.
Ce premier album de Games We Play est un bon premier jet et permettra à l’artiste d’être sûrement découvert par le plus de monde possible. Malgré une petite perte de vitesse et de rythme sur la deuxième partie de l’album, Emmyn réussit le pari de ne pas se planter et propose quelque chose d’assez cohérent.

We discovered Games We Play live in Paris with All Time Low just over a year ago! Now he’s releasing his debut album Life’s Going Great via Fueled By Ramen.
This first opus kicks off with The End. It’s exactly the kind of track that smells of summer, the end of the year on a US campus (preferably) and American Pie-style teenage movies. This song evokes the superficiality of certain relationships and society (« I know what she wants.A guy who drives a new Rolls every week and I don’t have a car »). Typical Me continues with the same teenage Pop-Punk or even teenage Punk-Rock vibe on the theme of bad habits, before moving on to Girl Shaped Crater, a track that comes closest to a ballad Emmyn dedicated to his wife, Dani, comparing her to a crater in the shape of a girl but also singing to her that she is his religion.
Oh So Blue returns to what the first tracks offered, namely something more rhythmic like Petty Enemy, which is sure to be taken up at the top of the lungs by the fans during the shows. It’s hardly surprising, then, that this track was chosen as the promo single and seems to be a perfect Vengeance Song before a short Interlude featuring Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy. Emmyn announces that he’s going to include a drum solo to Pete over the phone, who seems unconvinced, but in the end the interlude turns into a Drum Solo before the too young ballad. Once again we discover all the sensitivity and emotion conveyed by Emmyn‘s voice on a track that once again seems dedicated to his wife, the musician having mentioned on his social networks that they had married very young and separated only to get back together some time later. This song seems to evoke that painful break-up.
The second half of the album is largely made up of tracks that slow down the pace of the first, interesting songs about wanting to be someone else (Pretty Boy) or depression and lack of self-confidence (Round&Round) before the rhythm of the album changes again with the more energetic Naked. All My Untalented Friends is another song about superficiality, but this time it’s the music industry’s superficiality, and the album picks up a nice pace before ending with the title track, Life’s Going Great.
Games We Play‘s first album is a good first draft, and will surely enable the artist to be discovered by as many people as possible. Despite a slight loss of speed and rhythm in the second half of the album, Emmyn succeeds in keeping things on track and comes up with something fairly coherent.
