[ENGLISH BELOW] Le troisième album du groupe australien ALPHA WOLF, Half Living Things , est disponible depuis ce 05 avril via Sharptone Records/Greyscale Records. Le groupe ne cesse de monter depuis quelques temps allant jusqu’à créer son propre festival CVLTFEST et partant en tournée avec les plus grands groupes du genre Metalcore tels que Motionless In White ou encore The Amity Affliction.
Et c’est avec le single Bring Back The Noise sorti l’an dernier que s’ouvre ce troisième album! Un morceau aux influences certes Metalcore qui reste le style de prédilection de Alpha Wolf mais aussi très Nu-Metal avec la présence des scratchs de DJ qui fait très années 2000 qui entourent la voix énergique de Lochie Keogh, le tout sur une rythmique dynamique et entraînante. Poursuivant sur cette même voie Double-Edge Demise, avec les « tick tock, tick tock » en intro du frontman qui feront monter en pression avant les Mosh-Pit en concert, l’instrumental finira par achever les fosses mais ce qui est aussi intéressant dans ce morceau c’est la dynamique et le contraste entre le chant de Lochis et celui de John Arnold (basse/choeurs) là où le premier a un chant presque plus Hardcore, l’autre a un chant plus profond et qui ressort presque plus caverneux. Le morceau évoque le ressentiment voir la haine qu’on peut ressentir envers quelqu’un avec des paroles telles que « I’m gonna make you hate me » ou encore « Sick of seeing you smile, We’ll see who’s laughing ». Dévoilée en live lors de leur Festival CVLTFEST, c’est Haunter qui prend la suite avec son introduction aux synthés assez inquiétante avant que le chant ne prenne d’assaut la suite du morceau sur une rythmique toujours aussi infernale menée d’une main de maître par Mitch Fogarty (batterie), cette fois-ci le morceau semble plus sombre, plus négatif que les précédents, toujours aussi enragé quelque part mais sur un fond de thématique qui évoque la santé mentale « Hole in my head,I am living in a habitual nightmare », « A little more fucked up than I care to admit,I’m ashamed of the ways that I deal with it » ou encore les « Don’t wake me up » entonnés par le chanteur sur le final du morceau.
La fête revient avec le single Sucks 2 Sucks qui accueille un invité de marque en la personne de Ice-T (Body Count), ce morceau est d’ailleurs un gros coup de coeur sur ce nouvel opus. En soit la présence de Ice-T est un peu anecdotique n’apparaissant littéralement que quelques secondes mais ce caméo fait plaisir et permettra peut-être à Alpha Wolf de se faire découvrir d’un autre public plus « mainstream ». Le récent single Whenever You’re Ready dévoile une nouvelle facette du groupe plus émotionnelle, plus mélodique notamment avec le chant clair de John qui se greffe sans aucun effort à celui de Lochi dont la voix sur les couplets semble plus seule que jamais sans les instruments en arrière-plan, et cela ajoute une émotion supplémentaire, à cette chanson qui semble être une déclaration d’amour avec des paroles comme « I’ll sing your favourite songs,With tears flowing on » c’est beau presque trop beau pour un groupe comme Alpha Wolf. Pretty Boy revient à des morceaux plus « durs » et plus rapides où le chant clair arrive encore une fois à trouver sa place.
A Terrible Day To Rain (une référence à Full Metal Alchemist) est un morceau plus Metal avec des parties de batterie ultra rapides accompagné par les sonorités du synthé même si les riffs et certaines parties semblent être les mêmes tout le long de l’album, l’énergie est intacte et c’est sûrement pour ça que Alpha Wolf fonctionne aussi bien. Fiegn, ses changements de tempo et ses riffs arrivant parfois de nulle part reste un bon morceau tandis que le frontman entonne « You cannot hate me more than I used to” avant l’arrivée imminente du breakdown. L’album va se clore avec Ambivalence, une composition qui ralentit drastiquement le rythme des morceaux précédents en mettant l’accent sur le chant clair mais aussi le sens mélodique de Alpha Wolf notamment sur l’introduction plus épurée et aérienne.
Alpha Wolf est assurément un groupe sur lequel il faudra encore plus compter sur la scène Metalcore actuelle. Ce Half Living Things risque de les propulser très haut sur les affiches mondiales cette année, une vraie réussite mais aussi la présence de nombreux nouveaux éléments dans leur musique qui montre que le groupe cherche à faire évoluer sa musique.

The band has been going from strength to strength for some time now, even setting up their own CVLTFEST festival and touring with some of the biggest names in metalcore, including Motionless In White and The Amity Affliction.
And it’s with the single Bring Back The Noise, released last year, that this third album opens! A track with Metalcore influences, which remains Alpha Wolf‘s preferred style, but also very Nu-Metal, with the presence of DJ scratches that sound very 2000s, surrounding Lochie Keogh‘s energetic vocals, all set to a dynamic, driving rhythm. Continuing in the same vein on Double-Edge Demise, with the frontman’s « tick tock, tick tock » intro building up the pressure before the Mosh-Pit in live, the instrumental will eventually finish off the pits, but what’s also interesting about this track is the dynamics and contrast between Lochis‘ vocals and those of John Arnold (bass/backing vocals), where the former has an almost more hardcore vocal, the latter has a deeper vocal that comes out almost more cavernous. The track evokes the resentment and even hatred we can feel towards someone, with lyrics like « I’m gonna make you hate me » and « Sick of seeing you smile, We’ll see who’s laughing ». Unveiled live at their CVLTFEST Festival, it’s Haunter that takes over, with its ominous synth intro before the vocals take over the rest of the track over an infernal rhythm led by Mitch Fogarty (drums), but this time the track seems darker, more negative than its predecessors, still raging to some extent, but against a backdrop of themes that evoke mental health: « Hole in my head,I am living in a habitual nightmare », « A little more fucked up than I care to admit,I’m ashamed of the ways that I deal with it » or the « Don’t wake me up » intoned by the singer on the track’s finale.
The party returns with the single Sucks 2 Sucks, featuring a special guest in the person of Ice-T (Body Count). In itself, Ice-T‘s presence is a little anecdotal, appearing for literally just a few seconds, but this cameo is a welcome addition, and will perhaps allow Alpha Wolf to be discovered by a more mainstream audience. The recent single Whenever You’re Ready reveals a new, more emotional, more melodic side to the band, with John‘s clear vocals grafted effortlessly onto Lochi‘s, whose voice on the verses seems more alone than ever without the instruments in the background, and this adds extra emotion to a song that seems to be a declaration of love, with lyrics like « I’ll sing your favourite songs,With tears flowing on » that’s beautiful, almost too beautiful for a band like Alpha Wolf. Pretty Boy returns to « harder », faster songs where the clean vocals once again find their place.
A Terrible Day To Rain (a reference to Full Metal Alchemist) is a more metal track with ultra-fast drum parts accompanied by synth tones. Even if the riffs and certain parts seem to be the same throughout the album, the energy is intact and this is surely why Alpha Wolf works so well. Fiegn, with its tempo changes and riffs that sometimes come out of nowhere, remains a good track, while the frontman intones « You cannot hate me more than I used to » before the imminent breakdown. The album closes with Ambivalence, a composition that drastically slows down the pace of the previous tracks, emphasizing the clear vocals but also Alpha Wolf‘s melodic sense, particularly on the more refined, airy introduction.
Alpha Wolf are certainly a band to be reckoned with on today’s metalcore scene. This Half Living Things is likely to propel them to the top of the global billboard charts this year, a real success but also the presence of many new elements in their music, which shows that the band is seeking to evolve its music.
