[English version below] Le 21 mai dernier, le Backstage by the Mill accueillait une co-headline particulièrement attendue des amateurs de rock alternatif et de post-hardcore : Hands Like Houses et Broadside. Une date qui n’aura peut-être pas affiché complet sur la tournée française, mais qui aura largement compensé par son atmosphère chaleureuse, ses échanges sincères et une vraie proximité entre les groupes et le public.

Shimmeric : Une ouverture douce mais sincère
Dès 19h20, alors qu’une cinquantaine de personnes seulement occupent encore la salle, Shimmeric ouvre la soirée. Le groupe français propose un set de rock alternatif doux et mélodique, porté par une chanteuse à la voix maîtrisée et une bonne énergie malgré un public encore discret. Entre passages calmes et moments plus groovy, le groupe parvient à capter l’attention, notamment avec une reprise réarrangée de “Beautiful Things”, surprenante et efficace qui montre déjà une vraie identité.
Hands Like Houses : Le chaos émotionnel parfaitement maîtrisé
À 20h12, Hands Like Houses entre en scène sous une forte réaction du public. Dès les premiers morceaux, le groupe impose une énergie intense et une exécution très propre, proche des versions studio, avec une performance vocale particulièrement marquante. Le pit se forme rapidement et l’ambiance monte d’un cran.
Le concert devient vite très humain : le chanteur descend dans la fosse, échange avec le public et multiplie les interactions. Un moment fort survient lorsqu’un fan distribue des roses aux musiciens, qui les conservent puis les redonnent au public.
Le set alterne entre envolées atmosphériques et explosions puissantes, avec des titres comme “Perspective”, “Hollow” ou encore “Colourblind”, qui déclenche un véritable chaos dans la salle. Très bavard, le chanteur insiste sur le lien avec le public et la raison d’être du groupe : partager des moments avec des inconnus.
Le final est particulièrement intense, entre crowd surfing, wall of death et dernier morceau joué directement dans la fosse, dans une ambiance totalement électrique.
Broadside : Fun, énergie et refrains fédérateurs
À 21h35, Broadside prend le relais devant une salle un peu moins remplie. Dès leur arrivée, le groupe impose une énergie positive et décontractée, contrastant avec l’intensité émotionnelle de la tête d’affiche précédente. Leur rock alternatif très catchy fonctionne immédiatement, porté par des refrains efficaces et une vraie aisance scénique.
Le chanteur enchaîne les interactions avec humour entre les morceaux, n’hésitant pas à parler français ou à lancer des petites blagues sur les titres, ce qui renforce encore la proximité avec le public. Malgré une salle un peu moins dense, les premiers rangs répondent immédiatement, notamment sur “Heavenly” et “Nights Alone”, repris en chœur.
Le groupe raconte aussi son retour au Backstage après plusieurs années, se souvenant d’une salle bien plus vide lors de leur précédent passage, ce qui donne une dimension assez touchante à leur présence ce soir-là. L’énergie monte progressivement au fil du set, portée par des morceaux plus dynamiques comme “Dead Roses” ou “Coffee Talk”, où les slams et mouvements dans le pit se multiplient.
La présence des membres de Hands Like Houses dans la fosse ajoute encore à l’ambiance générale, transformant le concert en véritable moment de partage entre groupes et public. Broadside termine ainsi son set sur une note festive et fédératrice, laissant une impression de sincérité et de plaisir évident sur scène comme dans la salle.
[ENGLISH VERSION] On May 21st, Backstage by the Mill hosted a highly anticipated co-headline for fans of alternative rock and post-hardcore: Hands Like Houses and Broadside. While the show wasn’t sold out on their French tour, it more than made up for it with its warm atmosphere, genuine interaction, and real connection between the bands and the audience.

Shimmeric: A Gentle but Sincere Opening
At 7:20 pm, with only about fifty people still in the venue, Shimmeric opened the evening. The French band offered a set of mellow and melodic alternative rock, driven by a singer with a controlled voice and good energy despite the still relatively small crowd. Alternating between quieter passages and groovier moments, the band managed to capture the audience’s attention, notably with a surprising and effective rearranged cover of « Beautiful Things, » which already showcased their distinct identity.
Hands Like Houses: Perfectly Controlled Emotional Chaos
At 8:12 PM, Hands Like Houses took to the stage to a thunderous response from the crowd. From the very first songs, the band delivered an intense energy and a polished performance, close to their studio versions, with a particularly striking vocal display. The pit quickly formed, and the atmosphere intensified.
The concert soon became deeply personal: the singer descended into the crowd, interacting with the audience and engaging in numerous interactions. A powerful moment occurred when a fan distributed roses to the musicians, who kept them and then gave them back to the audience.
The set alternated between atmospheric flourishes and powerful bursts of energy, with tracks like “Perspective,” “Hollow,” and “Colourblind,” which unleashed a veritable frenzy in the venue. The very talkative singer emphasized the connection with the audience and the band’s raison d’être: to share moments with strangers.
The finale was particularly intense, featuring crowd surfing, a wall of death, and the last song played directly in the pit, creating a totally electric atmosphere.
Broadside: Fun, energy, and anthemic choruses
At 9:35 p.m., Broadside took the stage to a slightly less crowded venue. From the moment they arrived, the band exuded a positive and relaxed energy, contrasting sharply with the emotional intensity of the previous headliner. Their catchy alternative rock was an instant hit, driven by effective choruses and genuine stage presence.
The singer interacted humorously between songs, readily speaking French or cracking jokes about the tracks, further strengthening the connection with the audience. Despite the slightly smaller crowd, the front rows responded immediately, especially during “Heavenly” and “Nights Alone,” which they sang along to. The band also recounted their return to Backstage after several years, recalling a much emptier venue during their previous appearance, which added a rather touching dimension to their presence that evening. The energy gradually built throughout the set, driven by more dynamic tracks like “Dead Roses” and “Coffee Talk,” where crowd surfing and movement in the pit intensified.
The presence of members of Hands Like Houses in the pit further enhanced the overall atmosphere, transforming the concert into a genuine moment of connection between the band and the audience. Broadside thus ended their set on a festive and unifying note, leaving an impression of sincerity and obvious enjoyment both on stage and in the audience.
