Windwaker : smile, you’re on camera [FR/EN]

[ENGLISH VERSION] With smile, you’re on camera, their third studio album, released on October 23, 2026, via Fearless Records, Windwaker reaffirms their penchant for stylistic blending and experimentation. Across twelve tracks and 37 minutes, the Australian band delivers a remarkably eclectic record; it retains the foundations of their hybrid metalcore sound while adopting a rawer, guitar-driven approach compared to HYPERVIOLENCE.

The tone is set right from the opening track, « Low, » which features ethereal electronic soundscapes, massive riffs, rapped verses, and devastating screams. It is a formula that evokes both Linkin Park and Northlane, perfectly illustrating the interplay of contrasts woven throughout the album. Yet, Windwaker does more than simply lean on the tropes of modern metalcore. « Closer » explores an emo and pop-punk sensibility reminiscent of Bring Me The Horizon’s « That’s the Spirit » era, while « Click« , featuring RinRin, pushes experimentation even further by fusing nu-metal, hyperpop, and EDM elements. This collision of genres stands out as one of the album’s most unique moments.

This creative freedom is also evident on « Do or Die, » where hip-hop verses sit alongside R&B melodies and explosive metalcore outbursts, and on « DNA, » which pairs a drill-inspired rhythm with a highly effective pop-punk chorus. Windwaker clearly isn’t afraid to draw influences from every corner of the musical landscape, even when it means bringing together worlds that seem entirely at odds.

Beneath this sonic diversity, however, lies a deeply introspective album. Themes such as mental health, addiction, toxic relationships, self-esteem, regret, and social pressure serve as the record’s primary threads. Tracks like « Lie to Me, » « Loser, » and « Victory Lap » specifically examine our relationships with others, as well as our experiences with failure and success. The very title of the album, smile, you’re on camera, suggests a constant need for self-presentation, a drive to project a carefully curated image, even at the cost of concealing one’s own vulnerabilities. Following a brief moment of respite with « Wait for Me, » Windwaker brings the journey to a close with « Some Days« , a track the band describes as sad yet beautiful. It serves as a vulnerable, touching conclusion that stands in stark contrast to the aggression found elsewhere on the record, lending a genuine human dimension to the work as a whole.

Ultimately, smile, you’re on camera is an album that categorically refuses to be confined to a single label. From nu-metal, hip-hop, R&B, and pop-punk to hyperpop, EDM, and even drill, Windwaker draws from a vast array of influences, sometimes within the span of a single track, all while maintaining a distinct identity. Rawer than its predecessor yet just as adventurous, this third album confirms that the band prefers to blur boundaries rather than adhere to the conventions of metalcore. It is a bold, eclectic offering, underpinned by a profound sense of sensitivity beneath its experimental exterior.
