[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Le onzième album des Italiens de Lacuna Coil est disponible depuis le 14 février via Century Media Records. Intitulé Sleepless Empire, ce nouvel album est le cadeau de Saint Valentin parfait pour les fans du groupe!
C’est The Siege qui va ouvrir l’album, direct et accrocheur c’est une ouverture parfaite sur laquelle les voix de Cristina Scabbia et Andrea Ferro vont faire mouche encore une fois autant dans les cris que dans la douceur du chant clair. Un premier titre accrocheur et majestueux! Le single Oxygen prend la suite avec un côté plus moderne et groovy avec un Grand Refrain interprété par la chanteuse, le morceau est puissant et aborde des thématiques fortes comme celle notamment de se sortir d’un environnement toxique sans avoir l’impression d’y parvenir, la tentative de s’en sortir étant symbolisée par l’oxygène. Scarecrow va accélérer les choses, le duo basse/guitare étant particulièrement mis en avant ici et apportant cette sonorité un peu « bondissante », à coup sûr un morceau qui marchera très fort si il est joué lors des futurs concerts de Lacuna Coil! Gravity s’ouvre sur des chants en latin avant de proposer un morceau purement Gothic Metal auquel le groupe nous a déjà habitués par le passé mais avec un son bien plus lourd et puissant soutenu par la voix incroyable de Cristina! Le dernier single en date I Wish You Were Dead change un peu de registre et semble bien plus Rock que les compositions précédentes avec un refrain très entêtant, des paroles qu’on souhaiterait chanter à tue-tête à quelqu’un qui nous a fait du mal , que nous n’arrivons pas à oublier mais qu’on aimerait tant voir disparaître.
Hosting The Shadow est le premier featuring de l’album et c’est Randy Blythe (Lamb Of God) qui va se prêter au jeu! L’instrumental rappelle presque la musique bien grasse de l’invité quand à sa voix elle apporte presque plus de profondeur au morceau et laisse Andrea Ferro bien en retrait avant que In Nomine Patris ne revienne au Metal Gothique de Lacuna Coil. Sleepless Empire reste bien sûr dans la lignée des sonorités du groupe avec sa rythmique accrocheuse tandis que Sleep Paralysis va mettre en valeur les parties de guitare qui prendront le dessus sur le chant sur un passage. Puis arrive la deuxième collaboration cette fois-ci avec Ash Costello (New Years Day) sur In The Mean Time même si Lacuna Coil l’avait déjà révélé pour la promo de l’album ce titre n’en reste pas moins excellent et entêtant, les voix des deux chanteuses se mariant parfaitement. L’album se termine sur Never Dawn, un dernier rouleau compresseur simplement annoncé par un « Run ».
Ce nouvel album de Lacuna Coil ne déstabilisera aucunement leur fan-base, c’est un très bon album avec quelques morceaux un peu en dessous des autres (In Nomine Patris) mais le groupe délivre pour le reste des morceaux forts et intéressants et prouve également qu’il sait s’entourer avec des collaborations qualitatives! Hâte de les revoir en live avec cet album.

[ENGLISH VERSION] The eleventh album from Italy’s Lacuna Coil has been available since 14 February via Century Media Records. Entitled Sleepless Empire, this new album is the perfect Valentine’s Day present for fans of the band!
The album opens with The Siege, a direct, catchy opener on which the voices of Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro once again strike a chord, both in their screams and in the sweetness of their clean vocals. A catchy and majestic first track! The single Oxygen follows with a more modern, groovy feel, featuring a big chorus sung by the singer. The track is powerful and deals with powerful themes, such as escaping from a toxic environment without having the impression of succeeding, the attempt to escape being symbolised by oxygen. Scarecrow speeds things up, with the bass/guitar duet coming to the fore in particular, giving the song a bouncy sound that’s sure to be a big hit at future Lacuna Coil concerts! Gravity opens with Latin vocals before moving on to a purely Gothic Metal track to which we’ve become accustomed in the past, but with a much heavier, more powerful sound underpinned by Cristina‘s incredible voice! The latest single, I Wish You Were Dead, is a bit of a change of pace, sounding a lot more rock than their previous material, with a heady chorus and lyrics you’d want to sing at the top of your lungs to someone who’s done you wrong, someone you can’t get out of your head but would so much like to see disappear.
Hosting The Shadow is the first featuring on the album, and it’s Randy Blythe (Lamb Of God) who’s going to lend a hand! The instrumental is almost reminiscent of the guest’s greasy music, while his voice adds depth to the track, leaving Andrea Ferro well in the background before In Nomine Patris returns to Lacuna Coil‘s gothic metal. Sleepless Enemy remains in the band’s tradition with its catchy rhythm, while Sleep Paralysis highlights the guitar parts, which take over from the vocals on one section. Then comes the second collaboration, this time with Ash Costello (New Years Day) on In The Mean Time, even though Lacuna Coil had already revealed it to promote the album, the track is nonetheless excellent and heady, the voices of the two singers blending perfectly. The album ends with Never Dawn, a final steamroller simply announced by a ‘Run’.
Lacuna Coil‘s new album won’t destabilise their fan-base in the slightest. It’s a very good album, with a few tracks a little below the others (In Nomine Patris), but for the rest the band delivers strong, interesting tracks and proves that they know how to surround themselves with quality collaborations! Can’t wait to see them live again with this album.
