[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Pour la sortie de leur nouvel album, Pitch Black Sunset , j’ai eu le plaisir de poser quelques questions à la frontwoman du groupe Shakey Sue.
1/ Bonjour et tout d’abord, merci beaucoup pour ton temps ! Peux-tu te présenter et présenter ton groupe, The Hellfreaks ?
Bonjour et merci beaucoup de m’accueillir !
Je m’appelle Sue et je suis la chanteuse du groupe hongrois The Hellfreaks. Nous sommes un groupe de punk metal infusé de post hardcore, basé à Budapest et actif depuis 2009. Nous sommes le son des enfants qui ont grandi avec le rock’n roll, le punk, le métal et le hardcore – parce que c’est ce que nous faisons ! Et nous aimons mélanger ces éléments et les épicer avec une touche de modernité. À la question « À quels groupes ressemblez-vous ? », il me faut une éternité pour répondre. Il faut donc que vous nous écoutiez et que vous me disiez ce que vous en pensez !
2/ Votre nouvel album, Pitch Black Sunset, sort cette semaine sur Napalm Records et c’est votre première sortie avec eux, comment l’opportunité de travailler avec eux s’est-elle présentée ?
La réponse courte serait le travail acharné.
Mais entrons dans les détails : Nous sommes basés en Hongrie, qui n’est pas, et de loin, le plus grand marché pour la musique rock en Europe. Seule une poignée de groupes de rock arrivent à tourner régulièrement à l’étranger, et encore moins sont signés par de gros labels comme Napalm.
Nous avons construit ce groupe en nous appuyant sur une solide expérience en matière de bricolage. Nous avons déjà été signés par de plus petits labels, mais nous avons essayé de garder le plus de choses possibles entre nos mains. Le souhait d’être signé par un plus gros label est né il y a seulement quelques années, lorsque nous avons eu l’impression d’avoir atteint tout ce que nous pouvions faire par nous-mêmes.
Mais l’industrie musicale a toujours ses propres plans et les choses ne se passent jamais comme on le pense. Ce n’est que par un hasard insensé que nous avons fini par travailler avec un manager, qui gère également des groupes comme Jinjer et qui était déjà en contact direct avec le label. C’est à ce moment-là que nous avons écrit notre premier single, « Old Tomorrows », qui a été intégré au nouvel album. Cette chanson nous a ouvert les portes de Napalm Records.
3/ Comment s’est déroulé le processus de composition et d’écriture pour ce nouvel album ?
Habituellement, notre bassiste, Gabi, met au point les premières idées pour tous les instruments. L’idée doit contenir un couplet et un refrain avant que je puisse commencer à travailler sur le matériel. À ce stade, j’écoute cette idée brute un million de fois et je commence à travailler sur la mélodie vocale. Je pense que c’est la partie que je ne révélerai jamais au monde, car je n’ai pas de paroles à ce stade, ce qui signifie que nous enregistrons des mots insensés pour jouer avec la mélodie vocale. Et ça a l’air ridicule. Mais nous n’avons pas changé les choses qui fonctionnaient bien par le passé. Par exemple, nous enregistrons tout à la maison. Les voix sont enregistrées dans une petite cabine chez moi, qui était un garde-manger dans le passé.
Lorsque nous avons terminé la structure principale, Gabi commence à travailler sur les détails avec notre guitariste Jozzy et notre batteur Béla. Et en dernier lieu, je finalise les paroles. Mais même après tout cela, il arrive souvent que la chanson finisse des semaines plus tard à la poubelle. La seule exception sur cet album est « Weeping Willow » qui a commencé avec la mélodie vocale et les paroles, et tout le reste a été mis autour.
4/ Qu’est-ce qui t’inspire pour écrire tes chansons ?
Mes paroles sont toujours sombres, car c’est de là que vient mon inspiration. Je pense que la clé de la musique underground est l’honnêteté qu’elle véhicule et cet album est le plus honnête que j’ai jamais révélé de mon côté. Il va vraiment au fond du trou, mais je pense que beaucoup de gens ont des pensées sombres. C’est normal. Mais on nous dit toujours qu’il faut les cacher, qu’il ne faut pas en parler ouvertement parce que c’est bizarre. Mais ce n’est pas bizarre. Je ne suis pas du tout spéciale, donc beaucoup d’entre nous traversent des choses similaires et à travers la musique comme la nôtre, nous sommes capables de nous connecter, de nous raconter et même de nous aider les uns les autres.
5/ Vous avez sorti 5 chansons pour promouvoir Pitch Black Sunset, comment les avez-vous choisies ?
Et il y a encore un clip à venir !
L’industrie musicale a tellement changé ces dernières années. Il est très difficile de se faire entendre parmi les tonnes de bonne musique qui sortent chaque jour. En plus de l’audio, les éléments visuels sont un facteur important. Je n’en suis pas toujours heureuse, mais c’est la tendance. C’est pourquoi notre plan initial était de publier un clip vidéo pour toutes les chansons de l’album. Nous n’y sommes pas parvenus jusqu’à présent, mais pour résumer, nous ne croyons vraiment pas aux « bouche-trous » sur un album. Si nous pensons qu’une chanson n’est pas assez bonne, nous ne la mettons pas sur l’album juste pour l’allonger. C’est pourquoi nous aurions pu choisir n’importe quelle chanson de l’album pour en faire un single.
6/ Vous semblez avoir de nombreuses influences musicales comme le hardcore ou le punk (comme le prouve Old Tomorrows), quels sont les groupes qui vous inspirent le plus ? Et avec qui aimeriez-vous collaborer et pourquoi ?
Il n’y a pas de réponse claire quand il s’agit de nos influences. Je pense que tout ce que j’écoute est une influence sous une forme ou une autre et la palette va bien au-delà de vos suggestions ! Personnellement, je suis une grande fan des groupes de métal et de hardcore dirigés par des femmes, comme Walls Of Jericho, Marmozets, In This Moment, Distillers, Pretty Reckless ou des groupes comme Billy Talent, Offspring ou Gorillaz.
Mais ce n’est que moi qui souligne une toute petite pièce du puzzle. Les autres membres du groupe énuméreraient ici un large éventail de groupes qu’ils aiment, de Gojira à De Staat en passant par Queen. Et tout cela se retrouve d’une manière ou d’une autre dans notre musique.
Il y a beaucoup d’artistes que j’aimerais voir sur l’un de nos disques. Mais je vais choisir Alexander de Raised Fist. Je pense que ce serait un combo très intéressant !
7/ Avez-vous déjà des projets pour l’avenir du groupe ?
Oui ! Nous allons faire une petite tournée en mai et nous avons déjà annoncé quelques festivals :

8/ En tant que femme, comment vois-tu l’évolution de la scène metal et la place des femmes dans celle-ci ?
J’ai commencé ce groupe il y a 14 ans. La situation est bien meilleure qu’à l’époque ! À l’époque, toutes mes interviews consistaient à me demander comment c’était d’être une femme dans une industrie dominée par les hommes, parce que c’était quelque chose d’inhabituel. Aujourd’hui, ce n’est plus aussi spécial et cela me rend très heureuse. Je pense que la scène metal est très ouverte d’esprit à ce sujet, comparé à d’autres genres. J’adore en faire partie, mais il y a encore beaucoup à faire ! Il suffit de regarder les têtes d’affiche des plus grands festivals de metal, c’est encore loin d’être égal. Mais il ne serait pas réaliste de forcer le processus, il faut du temps pour changer les mentalités, mais je vois aussi que les choses vont déjà dans la bonne direction et que la scène metal se porte très bien à cet égard ! Des labels comme Napalm Records nous soutiennent particulièrement !
9/ Quels sont les groupes ou artistes qui figurent dans ta playlist actuelle et que tu aimerais recommander à nos lecteurs ?
Je pense que j’aimerais recommander quelques groupes hongrois dans cette section : jetez un coup d’œil au groupe hardcore The Southern Oracle. Nous avons quelques liens personnels ici, car notre bassiste Gabi Domján a joué, écrit et enregistré les parties de basse de cet album, et notre batteur Béla Budai est également le batteur de ce groupe.
Jetez aussi un œil au groupe hongrois Tiansen – ils vont assurer la première partie de notre concert Release Party à Budapest.

1/ Hello and first of all, thank you very much for your time! Could you please introduce yourself and your band, The Hellfreaks?
Hi there and thank you very much for having me!
My name is Sue and I’m the singer of the Hungarian band called The Hellfreaks. We are a post hardcore infused punk metal band, based in Budapest and active since 2009. We’re the sound for kids who grew up with rock’n roll, punk, metal and hardcore – because that’s what we’re into! And we love to mix these elements and spice them up with a modern touch. When it comes to the question “to which bands do you sound similar to” it takes me ages to give an answer. So you have to check us out and let me know what you think!
2/ Your new record, Pitch Black Sunset , is released this week on Napalm Records and it’s your first release with them, How did the opportunity to work with them come about?
The short answer would be hard work.
But to go more into the details: We are based in Hungary, which is by far not the biggest market for rock music in Europe. Just a handful of rock bands make it to tour abroad on a regular basis, but even fewer get signed by big labels like Napalm. We built up this band with a very strong DIY background. We were signed to smaller labels before, but we tried to hold as much as possible in our own hands. The wish to get signed to a bigger label was born only a very few years ago, when we felt like we had reached everything that we could on our own.
But the music industry always has its own plans and things never happen the way you think it could. Only through some crazy accidents we ended up working together with a management, who also manages bands like Jinjer and who were already in direct contact with the label. Back then we wrote our first single which made it to the new album called “Old Tomorrows”. That song was our door opener to Napalm Records in the end.
3/ How did the composition/writing process happen for this new one?
Usually our bass player, Gabi puts together some first ideas for all instruments. The idea has to contain a verse and a chorus before I actually can start to work on the material. At this point I listen to this raw idea for a million times and start to work out the vocal melody. I think that is the part that I’ll never reveal to the world, as I have no lyrics at this point, which means that we are recording senseless words to play around with the vocal melody. And it sounds ridiculous. But we haven’t changed things that worked well in the past. For example we record everything at home. The vocals are recorded in a little vocal booth at my home that was a pantry back in the past.
When we’re done with the main structure, Gabi starts to work out the details with our guitarist Jozzy and drummer Béla. And as the very last element I finalize the lyrics. But even after everything, it often happens that the song ends up weeks later in the trash. The only odd-one-out on this record is “Weeping Willow » which started with the vocal melody and lyrics, and everything else was put around it.
4/ What inspires you to write your songs?
My lyrics are always dark, because that’s where my inspiration comes from. I think the key of underground music is the honesty that it carries and this record is the most honest one I’ve ever revealed from my side. It really goes down the rabbit hole, but I think a lot of people have dark thoughts. It is normal. But we’re still told that we should hide these, we should not speak about it openly because it’s weird. But it’s not weird. I’m not special at all, so a lot of us go through similar things and through music like ours we are able to connect, relate and even help each other.
5/ You have released 5 songs to promote Pitch Black Sun, how did you choose them?
And there is still one music video to come!
The music industry has changed so much in the last few years. It is very hard to get heard by the tons of great music that is released day by day. And one important factor beside the audio itself are the visual elements. I’m not always happy about this, but that is just the tendency. That’s why our original plan was to drop a music video to all the songs on the album. We haven’t managed this so far, but to sum it up – we really don’t believe in ‘fillers’ on an album. If we don’t think that a song is good enough we don’t put it on the album just to lengthen it.
That’s why we could have picked any song from the album to drop it as a single.
6/ You seem to have many musical influences like hardcore or punk (as proven by Old Tomorrows), which bands inspire you the most? And who would you like to collaborate with and why?
There is no clear answer when it comes to our influences. I guess everything I listen to is an influence in some form and the palette goes way beyond your suggestions! I’m personally a huge fan of female fronted metal and hardcore bands, like Walls Of Jericho, Marmozets, In This Moment, Distillers, Pretty Reckless or bands like Billy Talent, Offspring to Gorillaz.
But this is just me highlighting a tiny little piece of the whole puzzle. The rest of the band would list here a crazy wide range of bands they like, from Gojira through De Staat to Queen. And it all somehow finds a place in our music. There are many artists I would love to see on one of our records. But I will go with Alexander from Raised Fist. I think that would be a super interesting combo!
7/ Do you already have some plans for the band’s future?
Yes! We’ll do a littler round just in May an have already some festival announced:

8/ As a woman, how do you see the evolution of the metal scene and the place of women in it?
I started this band 14 years ago. Compared to those times the situation is so much better! Back then all my interviews were about asking me, how it is to be a woman in a male dominated industry, because it was such an unusual thing. Now it is not that special anymore and that makes me super happy. I think especially the metal scene is very open minded regarding that compared to some other genres. I love to be part of it, but there is still so much to do! Just check the headline names of all the bigger metal festivals, it is still far from equal. But it wouldn’t be realistic to force the process, time is needed to change any mindset, but I also see that it is already going in a good direction and the metal scene is doing great regarding that! Labels like Napalm Records are especially supportive!
9/ Which bands or artists can be found in your current playlist that you would like to recommend to our readers?
I think I would like to recommend some Hungarian bands in this section: check out the hardcore band The Southern Oracle. We have some personal connections here because our bass player Gabi Domján played, wrote and recorded the bass parts for this album, and our drummer Béla Budai is also the drummer of this band.
