[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Le groupe espagnol Ankor avait été un véritable coup de coeur à la sortie des singles Oblivion/Prisoner et ils viennent de sortir Shoganai considéré comme un mini-album via UNFD. Un Vol.2 serait en préparation car Shoganai est un premier volume.
C’est une intro The world is a cruel place. And it is also very beautiful. qui va ouvrir ce premier volume avec les mots « Wake Up » et le titre de cette intro repris avec différentes sonorités (autant Electro que plus Metal) qui sortent des différentes compositions de ce mini-album avec le final qui se fait sur Darkbeat premier véritable morceau. Un mélange de Metalcore et de touches plus Electro sur lequel on peut aisément un joli clapping en live. Mais ce qu’on retient c’est tout autant le dynamisme de Eleni Nota (batterie), la voix puissante de Jessie Williams autant dans les couplets screamés que sur le refrain en chant clair et les riffs lourds de Fitozz et David (guitares). Suit le duo Prisoner/Oblivion celui sur lequel la découverte du groupe s’est faite, un duo de singles qui va retourner les fosses en concert mais aussi toucher en plein coeur de nombreuses personnes, les morceaux d’Ankor traitant souvent de santé mentale :
« I never thought I’d be the one who’d need a helping hand
Never thought I’d burn down to ashes
Until this terrifying darkness took a hold of me
Until I couldn’t breathe.
[…]
There’s a deep hole in the ground
Where my dark thoughts come alive
There’s a deep hole in my heart
Where my nightmares come alive. »
Là où Prisoner commençait tel un rouleau-compresseur, Oblivion a un début beaucoup plus doux même si le refrain est là encore très fort, le morceau est presque exclusivement interprété en chant clair même si quelques lignes screamées se rajoutent majoritairement en arrière-plan ou alors sur le final où on a également l’impression d’entendre un rythme cardiaque. Stereo est probablement le morceau le plus Electro même si encore une fois le refrain gardant une part d’Auto-tune sur la voix va gagner en puissance notamment dans le Scream mais aussi dans l’énergie toujours apportée par Eleni. Là encore le groupe évoque la lutte contre les démons intérieurs qu’on peut tous avoir :
« I feel my shadows constantly watching
How can I fight them all on my own?
The fear of letting go of what I’ve always known
Uncertain of what I will become (face it) »
Même si Stereo était probablement le morceau le moins convaincant de l’ensemble à sa sortie il n’en est rien après avoir eu sa version live au Hellfest 2024, un morceau puissant et relativement catchy. Venom est littéralement LE banger de Shoganai, celui qui va retourner un pit, briser des cervicales et continuer à nous dévoiler la palette vocale de Jessie. La dernière partie en chant clair met encore en lumière les parties de double pédale de Eleni sur la voix claire de la chanteuse qui ne va pas nous quitter jusqu’au final. Embers et ses sonorités plus Dance devait rejoindre Stereo dans les morceaux moins emblématiques de Shoganai mais son refrain a littéralement changé la donne et son côté plus dansant est presque une bouffée d’air. Ici, Ankor évoque le fait de perdre quelqu’un de cher et de faire un deuil difficile :
« I’ll be by your side
Even if it takes a thousand lives
I promise that I will find you on the other side, in another life
In another time, under a different sky, with a different light
These embers lead me to you »
C’est le morceau Shoganai qui va conclure ce premier volume, une composition un peu plus « originale » puisqu’elle intègre des orchestrations majestueuses le tout en gardant la signature Moderne et Catchy de Ankor. Là où l’intro reprenait des sonorités de certains morceaux sur ce dernier on peut retrouver des paroles des morceaux précédents comme Oblivion ou encore des références à Stereo avant une partie en chant clair interprétée par le guitariste David, une bonne surprise qu’on espère retrouver sur plus de morceaux à l’avenir.
Ce mini-album regorge de pépites, les amateurs de Metal Moderne ou tout simplement ceux à la découverte de nouvelles sonorités seront ravis de découvrir Ankor avec Shoganai! Et nous on a hâte de découvrir la suite et de les revoir en live.

[ENGLISH VERSION] Spanish band Ankor was a real favorite when they released their singles Oblivion/Prisoner, and they’ve just released Shoganai, considered a mini-album via UNFD. A Vol.2 is said to be in preparation, as Shoganai is a first volume.
It’s an intro The world is a cruel place. And it is also very beautiful. which opens this first volume with the words “Wake Up” and the title of this intro taken up with different sounds (as much Electro as more Metal) which come out of the different compositions of this mini-album with the finale on Darkbeat, the first real track. A mix of Metalcore and more Electro touches on which you can easily clap live. But what really stands out is the dynamism of Eleni Nota (drums), the powerful voice of Jessie Williams in both the screamed verses and the clean chorus, and the heavy riffs of Fitozz and David (guitars). This is followed by the Prisoner/Oblivion duet, on which the band’s discovery was made, a duo of singles that not only turned pits upside down in concert, but also touched the hearts of many, as Ankor‘s songs often deal with mental health:

Where Prisoner began like a steamroller, Oblivion has a much gentler start, even if the chorus is still very strong. The track is almost exclusively sung in clear vocals, although a few screamed lines are added in the background, or on the finale, where you also get the impression of hearing a heartbeat. Stereo is probably the most Electro track, although once again the chorus, which retains a touch of Auto-tune on the vocals, gains in power, particularly in the scream, but also in the energy still provided by Eleni. Here again, the band evokes the struggle against inner demons that we can all have:
“I feel my shadows constantly watching
How can I fight them all on my own?
The fear of letting go of what I’ve always known
Uncertain of what I will become (face it)”.
Even if Stereo was probably the least convincing track of the set on its release, it’s not so after having heard its live version at Hellfest 2024, a powerful and relatively catchy track. Venom is literally THE Shoganai banger, the one that will turn a pit upside down, break necks and continue to reveal Jessie‘s vocal palette. The last part of the song, on clean vocals, highlights Eleni‘s double pedal parts on the singer’s clear voice, which won’t leave us until the finale. Embers, with its more dance-oriented sounds, was destined to join Stereo among Shoganai‘s less emblematic tracks, but its chorus has literally changed the game and its more danceable side is almost a breath of fresh air. Here, Ankor evokes the experience of losing someone dear to you and the difficult mourning process:
“I’ll be by your side

In another time, under a different sky, with a different light
These embers lead me to you”
Shoganai brings the first volume to a close, a composition that’s a little more “original” in that it incorporates majestic orchestrations while retaining Ankor‘s signature modern, catchy feel. Where the intro takes up sounds from certain tracks on this one, we find lyrics from previous tracks such as Oblivion or references to Stereo before a clear vocal part performed by guitarist David, a pleasant surprise that we hope to find on more tracks in the future.
This mini-album is packed with nuggets, and fans of modern metal or simply those looking to discover new sounds will be delighted to discover Ankor with Shoganai! And we can’t wait to discover the rest and see them live again.
