[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Darkthrone a sorti il y’a quelques jours leur nouvel album Pre-Historic Metal via le label Peaceville Records. Comme à chaque nouvelle sortie, le duo Fenriz/Culto n’a pas souhaité dévoiler son nouvel opus aux médias en avant-première, c’est donc maintenant qu’on prend le temps de découvrir ces huit nouveaux titres.
They Found One Of My Graves nous plonge directement dans quelque chose de Old-School et Raw inspiré des 80’s. On a ici une production un peu crade qui semble tout droit sortir d’un enregistrement dans un garage le tout sur fond de riffs Thrash avec la voix sortie tout droit d’une caverne de Nocturno Culto et le final du morceau se veut plus atmosphérique et presque mystique. Pour une mise en bouche, c’est plutôt un bon début on espère donc une suite toute aussi intéressante! Le titre éponyme Pre-Historic Metal prend donc la suite, il est plus énergique se rapprochant de quelque chose de plus « Punk » , le vocaliste apporte un côté toujours plus glacial et brut à l’ensemble tandis que ses riffs eux sont rapides et très dynamiques. On continue avec Siberian Thaw qui est plus orienté Doom de par sa rythmique plus lente et plus pesante avec un côté Heavy le tout dans une ambiance presque hypnotique voire mystique.
Deeply Rooted est un nouvelle composition très inspirée 80’s, agréable à l’écoute et sans fioritures, ce morceau signe d’ailleurs (déjà) la première moitié de ce nouvel album! The Dry Wells Of Hell mets l’accent sur le côté Heavy entraînant et le chant clair du vocaliste qui montre d’ailleurs qu’il peut monter assez haut dans les notes plus aiguës avant de redescendre sur une tonalité plus basse. L’instrumental So I Marched To The Sunken Empire permet presque de faire une pause et de se concentrer sur la musique ici plus psychédélique qui va se terminer sur des rires avant Eat Eat Eat Your Pride et le final sur Eon 4 très inspiré par le groupe King Diamond autant dans sa construction que par sa maîtrise du Heavy.
Darkthrone livre un nouvel album intéressant naviguant entre Heavy Metal et une maîtrise de leur passé Black Metal toujours authentique et RAW à souhait.

[ENGLISH VERSION] A few days ago, Darkthrone released their new album *Pre-Historic Metal* via Peaceville Records. As with every new release, the duo of Fenriz and Culto chose not to give the media an advance listen to their new album, so it is only now that we are taking the time to discover these eight new tracks.
‘They Found One Of My Graves’ plunges us straight into something old-school and raw, inspired by the 80s. Here we have a slightly gritty production that sounds as if it came straight from a garage recording, all set against a backdrop of thrash riffs with vocals straight out of a cave from Nocturno Culto, and the track’s finale is more atmospheric and almost mystical. As a taster, it’s a pretty good start, so we’re hoping for an equally interesting follow-up! The eponymous track ‘Pre-Historic Metal’ follows on; it’s more energetic, verging on something more ‘Punk’, with the vocalist bringing an even more icy and raw edge to the whole, whilst the riffs are fast and highly dynamic. We continue with ‘Siberian Thaw’, which leans more towards doom metal thanks to its slower, heavier rhythm section with a heavy edge, all set against an almost hypnotic, even mystical atmosphere.
Deeply Rooted is a new track heavily inspired by the 80s, pleasant to listen to and unpretentious; this track also (already) marks the halfway point of this new album! The Dry Wells Of Hell emphasises the catchy heavy side and the vocalist’s clean vocals, which demonstrate that he can reach quite high in the higher notes before dropping back down to a lower register. The instrumental So I Marched To The Sunken Empire almost allows for a breather, letting you focus on the more psychedelic music here, which ends with laughter before Eat Eat Eat Your Pride and the finale, Eon 4 – heavily inspired by King Diamond, both in its structure and its mastery of heavy metal.
Darkthrone deliver an interesting new album, navigating between heavy metal and a command of their black metal past that remains as authentic and raw as ever.
