Pour les fans de pop-punk, le mois de mai correspond au mois d’un des plus gros festival du genre qui se déroule en Angleterre : le Slam Dunk. Le festival s’exporte désormais en Europe, dans le prolongement des dates principales en Angleterre, mais contrairement aux trois dernières années, aucune date n’avait lieu en France. Notre lot de consolation avait cependant lieu ce 26 mai du côté du Backstage, avec le passage de Hawthorne Heights, quelques jours après leur prestation au Slam Dunk. La consolation n’était pas maigre puisque le groupe ne s’était pas produit en France depuis plus de dix ans!
Assez rare pour le noter, le concert du soir n’avait malheureusement pas de première partie, à la place, ce qui a attiré notre attention sur l’affiche était plutôt l’annonce du 20ème anniversaire du deuxième album de Hawthorne Heights, If Only You Were Lonely (2006). Le groupe est en effet en tournée depuis le début de l’année pour célébrer ce fantastique album en nous promettant de le jouer en son intégralité. Sans tarder, le groupe arrive donc sur scène sur les notes de This Is Who We Are et on comprend que l’interprétation de l’album sera largement à la hauteur de sa qualité. Les émotions, le son, la voix de JT, tout est resté intact malgré les 20 ans qui nous sépare de la sortie de l’album. Au lieu de jouer la carte de la nostalgie, JT cherche plutôt à réencrer sa musique dans le présent, en rappelant l’importance de vivre ces moments de musique live et en appelant le public à se ressentir jeune, l’espace d’une soirée. Son discours, plein de flegme, vient du cœur et il embarque le public avec lui très facilement, notamment lorsqu’il déclare avoir insisté pour venir faire cette date à Paris, malgré un calendrier chargé et peu de jours off.
Malgré un public plutôt peu nombreux, les originaires de l’Ohio se donnent au maximum et peuvent compter sur les morceaux incontournables de leur deuxième album Saying Sorry ou Pens and Needles. Cet album play permet également de mettre en avant certaines deep cuts issus de cet album comme la magnifique balade Decembers ou le très bon Light Sleeper. Le groupe ne s’arrête pas là une fois l’album terminé et nous propose quelques morceaux supplémentaires : impossible pour le groupe de ne pas interpréter deux de ses morceaux les plus connus Niki Fm et surtout le titre emo culte Ohio Is For Lovers, introduit par plein de second degré par le groupe originaire de cet Etat des USA où il n’y a globalement rien à faire, pour reprendre les termes de JT. Et puisque le groupe est toujours actif et productif, Hawthorne Heights nous interprète son dernier single en date, le fabuleux Like A Cardinal qui donne envie de voir ce que le groupe va nous proposer dans les prochains mois.
Malgré une absence de date du Slam Dunk en France cette année, le public parisien a tout de même eu le droit à sa dose de pop-punk emo des années 2000 avec le passage plus qu’attendu de Hawthorne Heights. Venu fêter les 20 ans de If Only you Were Lonely, la bande à JT Woodruff a largement convaincu son public en interprétant parfaitement cet album classique du genre et en apportant une sincérité et de positivité dans cette chaude soirée de mai.

For pop-punk fans, the month of May means one thing: one of the genre’s biggest festivals, Slam Dunk, taking place in the UK. In recent years, the festival has expanded into mainland Europe, extending beyond its main UK dates. However, unlike the previous three editions, there was no French stop this year. Fortunately, we had a worthy consolation prize on May 26th at Backstage in Paris, where Hawthorne Heights performed just a few days after their Slam Dunk appearance. And it was no small consolation, considering the band had not played in France for over a decade.
Rather unusually, the evening featured no opening act. Instead, what immediately caught our attention on the poster was the announcement celebrating the 20th anniversary of Hawthorne Heights’ second album, If Only You Were Lonely (2006). The band has been touring throughout the year in honor of this fantastic record, promising to perform it in its entirety. Without delay, they took the stage to the opening notes of This Is Who We Are, and it quickly became clear that the performance would live up to the album’s reputation. The emotions, the sound, JT’s vocals—everything remained remarkably intact despite the twenty years that have passed since the album’s release. Rather than simply relying on nostalgia, JT sought to reconnect the music with the present moment, emphasizing the importance of experiencing live music and encouraging the audience to feel young again, if only for one night. His laid-back yet heartfelt speeches resonated deeply and easily won over the crowd, especially when he revealed that he had personally pushed for this Paris date despite an already packed schedule and very few days off.
Although the audience was relatively small, the Ohio natives gave it everything they had, helped by standout tracks from their sophomore effort such as Saying Sorry and Pens and Needles. Performing the album in full also allowed them to shine a spotlight on some of its deeper cuts, including the beautiful ballad Decembers and the excellent Light Sleeper. Once the album concluded, the band was far from finished and treated the audience to several additional songs. There was no way Hawthorne Heights could leave the stage without playing two of their best-known tracks, Niki FM and, above all, the emo classic Ohio Is for Lovers. The latter was introduced with plenty of self-deprecating humor from the band, whose members joked about coming from a U.S. state where, as JT put it, there is “basically nothing to do.” And because the band remains both active and prolific, Hawthorne Heights also performed their latest single, the outstanding Like a Cardinal, which leaves us eager to hear what they have in store over the coming months.
Despite the absence of a Slam Dunk date in France this year, Parisian fans still got their dose of 2000s emo-pop-punk thanks to the long-awaited return of Hawthorne Heights. Having come to celebrate the 20th anniversary of If Only You Were Lonely, JT Woodruff and company more than delivered, performing this genre-defining classic flawlessly while bringing a genuine sense of sincerity and positivity to a warm May evening.
