Les Lyonnais d’Oakman sont actifs depuis maintenant quelques années, en ayant été à l’affiche de très belles dates (Le Slam Dunk Lyon, en première partie de Enter Shikari ou plus récemment Neck Deep), et avec en poche la sortie de plusieurs EP, mais jusque là, le trio n’avait pas encore sorti son premier album. C’est désormais chose faite, avec Violent Oblivion, tout juste sorti chez Rude Records.
L’album commence avec la belle introduction I am floating… et on sent que le groupe veut planter le décor et nous plonger dans une ambiance particulière. On a souvent pu retrouver des ambiances et des références spatiales dans leurs précédents morceaux, mais Oakman souhaite approfondir encore un peu plus cette dimension avec cet album. Ce format plus long leur permet justement de faire cela, puisqu’on retrouve en plus de cet intro, une outro au titre évocateur et qui fait écho à l’intro : …faraway in space, forever. La très belle pochette, qui donne une identité visuelle à cet album, contribue également à installer cette ambiance. Le résultat est très convaincant et on se laisse très facilement emporté par cet album. Cet atmosphère nous renvoie vers des groupes comme Angels & Airwaves ou Enter Shikari pour lesquels la thématique spatiale est centrale dans beaucoup de leurs productions. Ces références spatiales se retrouvent également dans les lyrics des morceaux. Je pense notamment à Air Hunger, le deuxième single de l’album :

Au delà de cet atmosphère, Oakman délivre encore une fois des morceaux captivants et accrocheurs dès les premières écoutes. Et surtout, la puissance des mélodies trouvées par le groupe est bluffante. Et la voix de Marine, qui maîtrise à la perfection plusieurs gammes et tonalités, sublime ces notes. Le ton est donné avec le premier morceau Ricochet et son fredonnement introductif, mais que dire des mélodies des refrains de Missed Connections ou de Love Picture Soundtrack ? C’est tout simplement brillant! L’ingéniosité et l’originalité du groupe s’exprime également dans le contraste entre ces belles mélodies et des thématiques plus sombres. Le parfait exemple est sûrement I Wish Myself To Be Happier où la mélodie presque enfantine est contrebalancée par des lyrics pleins de rancœur et de ressentiment. Le morceau éponyme de l’album se démarque cependant du reste du disque puisque la tonalité et les lyrics y sont en cohérence et le tout est résolument triste et négatif. Un titre effectivement à part, comme l’a annoncé Marine lors de la performance de celui-ci lors de la release party de l’album, en ajoutant qu’il s’agissait par ailleurs d’un des morceaux les plus personnels qu’elle ait écrit sur cet album.
Avec Violent Oblivion, Oakman nous propose un premier album ambitieux et cohérent. Que ce soit dans l’ambiance spatiale installée ou dans ses mélodies mémorables, cet album se laisse écouter et découvrir allègrement. Le groupe avait déjà franchi une étape avec leur très bon EP SCP (2022), mais cet album confirme l’ascension des Lyonnais et leur inspiration toujours vive. Sans aucun doute un des albums marquants de cet année 2024.

The Lyon-based band Oakman has been active for several years now, having released several EPs and performed at some great events (Slam Dunk Lyon, opening for Enter Shikari and more recently Neck Deep). However, until now, the trio had not yet released their first album. That has now changed with the release of Violent Oblivion, which came out on Rude Records.
The album begins with the beautiful introduction « I am floating… » and we can feel that the band wants to set the scene and immerse us in a particular atmosphere. In their previous tracks, there have often been spatial vibes, but Oakman aims to delve even deeper into this dimension with this album. This longer format allows them to do so, and as in addition to this intro, there is an evocatively titled outro that echoes the intro: …faraway in space, forever. The beautiful album cover, which gives a visual identity to this album, also helps establish this atmosphere. The result is very convincing, and it’s easy to get carried away by this album. This atmosphere reminds us of bands like Angels & Airwaves or Enter Shikari, for whom the spatial theme is central in many of their productions. These spatial themes are also reflected in the lyrics of the songs. I am thinking for example of Air Hunger, the second single from the album.

Beyond this atmosphere, Oakman delivers once again new tracks that are captivating and catchy from the very first listens. The power of the melodies crafted by the band is particularly impressive. Marine’s voice, which perfectly masters various ranges and tones, enhances these melodies beautifully. The tone is set with the first track Ricochet and its introductory humming, but what can be said about the choruses of Missed Connections or Love Picture Soundtrack ? It’s simply brilliant. The band’s ingenuity also shows in the contrast between these beautiful melodies and darker themes. The perfect example is surely I Wish Myself To Be Happier, where the almost childlike melody is counterbalanced by lyrics full of bitterness and resentment. However, the album’s title track stands out from the rest of the record as both the tone and the lyrics are consistently somber and negative. A truly special track in the album, as Marine announced during its performance at the album’s release party, adding that it was also one of the most personal songs she had written on this album.
With Violent Oblivion, Oakman made an ambitious and cohesive debut album. Whether it’s the established spatial ambiance or the memorable melodies, this album is a pleasure to listen to and discover. The band had already taken a significant step with their excellent EP SCP (2022), but this album confirms the ascent of the Lyon-based band and their intense inspiration. Without a doubt, one of the standout albums of 2024.
