[English version below] Les Australiens de Make Them Suffer étaient, enfin, de retour en France en ce 6 mai à l’occasion cette fois-ci d’une tournée européenne dans laquelle c’était, enfin, eux les artistes phares de la soirée ! Une occasion que nous ne pouvions pas manquer, merci à Denise de Kinda pour l’invitation à ce concert ainsi qu’à Estelle, mon acolyte, pour ses photos. C’est accompagné de If Not For Me et Conjurer que la formation de Metalcore australienne était de retour dans nos contrées. Les français de chez Resolve, également présent sur le reste du tour, ne jouaient malheureusement pas ce soir.
C’est If Not For Me qui était chargé d’ouvrir les hostilités ce soir. Le groupe commence son show à 19h50 pétante dans une Maroquinerie affichée sold out ! Dès le début de leur partie on y apprécie le chant : la partie claire est très cool et catchy, le screamo ne déçoit pas. Le public, comme nous, ne semble pas trop connaître le groupe de Metalcore originaire de Pennsylvanie mais ça bouge gentiment la tête en rythme avec les sons. Le chanteur prendra la parole pour expliquer que c’est leur première fois en France. Le groupe est donc très content d’être présent ce soir et il chauffe efficacement la salle en faisant hurler le public.
Le set des américains sera trop court à notre goût et concis. C’est efficace, ça plaît visiblement à la foule qui ovationne la formation à la fin des titres. Le pit s’ouvre notamment sur les breakdown, tout le monde semble passer un bon moment et l’énergie du groupe est communicative : c’est joyeux et bon enfant ! Au niveau des titres nous auront notamment droit à No Thanks To You, Blameless ou encore Say It To My Face. C’est en toute simplicité et en remerciant chaleureusement le public que If Not For Me laisse place au groupe suivant.
Après une pause d’une quinzaine de minutes, nous voici prêts pour cette deuxième partie de soirée. Conjurer monte sur les planches de la Maroquinerie à 20h40. Instantanément c’est un changement de ton RADICAL auquel nous avons droit. C’est sombre, lent, gras et sans chant clair : c’est avec surprise que nous découvrons que cette partie nous présente du Sludge/Doom Metal.
Le groupe est bien plus en retrait que ses prédécesseurs mais nous impressionne de part sa technique sur scène. Mention spéciale au bassiste qui apporte vraiment de l’énergie à l’ensemble : ce dernier se rendra notamment dans la fosse sur Retch pour jouer au milieu du pit ce qui remotivera la foule !
Niveau musical ce sera cette fois des gros riffs de guitare, des break abyssaux, le groupe est super synchro, le tout se veut presque chorégraphié ! L’énergie qui se dégage de la scène est très brute. Côté setlist nous aurons droit à davantage de titres dont Choke, Rot ou encore Warmth.
La fin du set de Conjurer semble motiver les derniers arrivants à se faire une place dans la fosse pour l’arrivée des Australiens : La Maroquinerie est désormais pleine à craquer et devient super bruyante pour l’arrivée imminente de Make Them Suffer. 21h30 sonne, le groupe n’est pas encore monté sur scène mais dans le public ça hurle déjà ! Plus encore : le pit s’est déjà ouvert sur le titre lancé juste avant l’intro ( My Curse de Killswich Engage). Et l’arrivée de la formation n’arrange rien, le mosh pit sera inarrêtable durant tout le set !
Make Them Suffer commence par l’un de ses plus gros titres et c’est direct le bordel, le pit est blindé mais bouge bien, on sent l’attente de la foule. Les Australiens enchainent donc Epitath et Bones avec une bonne humeur super communicative. On assiste à l’apparition des premiers crowdsurfers dès le deuxième titre ! Uncharted, un peu plus calme suit derrière, qu’à cela ne tienne la salle entière est en rythme avec les membres de la formation. Le pit s’ouvre pendant le breakdown débordant dans les marches. Sean, chanteur principal du groupe, fait un petit coeur avec ses mains pour remercier le public de son énergie.
La soirée se poursuit dans la même énergie : Make them suffer enchaîne efficacement les titres dans une énergie folle et partagée avec le public qui ne s’arrêtera jamais de hurler et de bouger dans tout les sens. On apprécie de nouveau le superbe duo de Dean au scream et d’Alex qui apporte de la rondeur avec son timbre plus aigu notamment sur les choeurs ou les refrains. Celle-ci est porté par son vocaliste principal. Chaque breakdown est le théâtre de violence dans la fosse : c’est la bagarre .
Le groupe prendra bien évidemment la parole pour se présenter et dire au combien ils sont contents de revenir. Ils demandent au public de s’amuser le plus possible ! Ils expliquent aussi que ce soir c’est leur deuxième tour en headline en Europe alors même qu’ils ont un groupe qui dure 15/16 ans. Ils remercient les fans et leur dédie la très connue et très attendue Erase Me.
Aucun répit dans cette soirée puisque Make Them Suffer enchaîne avec Doomswitch. C’est l’avalanche d’énergie dans la foule, il fait vraiment chaud dans la salle ! Widower balancé juste derrière pour clôturer le set viendra prendre le peu d’énergie qu’il nous reste, on ressort de la salle lessivés ! Le concert se finit aux alentours de 22h30, on repart satisfaits comme jamais du set du groupe de Metalcore australiens, qui, il faut le dire, est carrément remonté dans notre estime. Nous attendons désormais qu’ils reviennent avec impatience!
[ENGLISH VERSION] Australians Make Them Suffer were finally back in France on May 6th, this time for a European tour where they were, at long last, the headline acts of the evening! An opportunity we couldn’t miss, thanks to Denise (Kinda) for the invitation to this concert, as well as to Estelle, my friend, for her photos. The Australian metalcore band returned to our shores accompanied by If Not For Me and Conjurer. The French band Resolve, also present on the rest of the tour, unfortunately weren’t playing tonight.
If Not For Me was in charge of opening the show tonight. The band started their show at 7:50 pm sharp in a sold-out Maroquinerie! From the very beginning, we appreciated the vocals: the clean section is very cool and catchy, and the screamo doesn’t disappoint. The audience, like us, doesn’t seem to be very familiar with the Pennsylvania-based Metalcore band, but they bob their heads nicely in time with the sounds. The singer takes the stage to explain that it’s their first time in France. The band is very happy to be there tonight and effectively warms up the room, getting the audience roaring.
The Americans’ set is too short and concise for our taste. It’s effective, and the crowd clearly enjoys it, giving the band a standing ovation at the end of the songs. The pit opens with the breakdowns, everyone seems to be having a good time, and the band’s energy is infectious: joyful and good-natured! As for the songs, we’ll be treated to songs like No Thanks To You, Blameless, and Say It To My Face. With a simple, warm thank you to the audience, If Not For Me gives way to the next band.
After a fifteen-minute break, we’re ready for the second half of the evening. Conjurer takes to the stage at La Maroquinerie at 8:40 PM. We’re instantly treated to a radical change of tone. It’s dark, slow, greasy, and without clean vocals: we’re surprised to discover that this set features sludge/doom metal.
The band is much more withdrawn than its predecessors but impresses us with its onstage technique. Special mention to the bassist who really brings energy to the ensemble: he goes into the pit on Retch to play in the middle of the pit, which really gets the crowd pumped up!
Musically, this time, it’s all about big guitar riffs and abysmal breaks. The band is super in sync, and everything feels almost choreographed! The energy emanating from the stage is very raw. As for the setlist, we’ll be treated to more songs, including Choke, Rot, and Warmth.
The end of Conjurer‘s set seems to motivate the latecomers to make room in the pit for the Australians’ arrival: La Maroquinerie is now packed and getting super loud for the imminent arrival of Make Them Suffer. It’s 9:30 p.m., the band hasn’t even taken the stage yet, but the crowd is already screaming! Even more so: the pit has already opened with the song launched just before the intro (My Curse by Killswich Engage). And the band’s arrival doesn’t help matters; the mosh pit is unstoppable throughout the entire set!
Make Them Suffer opens with one of their biggest hits and it’s immediately a mess. The pit is packed but rocking well, and you can feel the crowd’s anticipation. The Australians then follow up with Epitath and Bones with a super-infectious good mood. We witness the first crowdsurfers appear from the second song! Uncharted, a little calmer, follows behind, but the entire room, four in time with the band members, is in sync. The pit opens during the breakdown, overflowing into the stairs. Sean, the band’s lead singer, makes a little heart shape with his hands to thank the audience for their energy.
The evening continues with the same energy: Make Them Suffer effectively follows the songs, with a crazy energy shared by the audience, who never stop screaming and moving in all directions. We once again appreciate the superb duet of Dean on the scream and Alex, who brings a roundness with his more aidus timbre, especially on the heartstrings and choruses. The latter is carried by his lead vocalist. Each breakdown is the scene of violence in the pit: it’s a brawl.
The band naturally takes the floor to introduce themselves and say how happy they are to be back. They ask the audience to have as much fun as possible! They also explained that this was their second headline tour in Europe, even though they’d been a band for 15 or 16 years. They thanked the fans and dedicated the well-known and highly anticipated Erase Me to them. There was no letup in the evening as Make Them Suffer followed with Doomswitch. The crowd exploded with energy; it was really hot in the room! Widower played right behind for closing the set will take the little energy we have left, we leave the room exhausted! The concert ends around 10:30 p.m., we leave satisfied as ever with the set of the Australian Metalcore band, which, it must be said, has really gone up in our esteem. We are now impatiently waiting for them to come back!
