Après plusieurs années sans véritable tournée européenne, Joji retrouvait Paris ce mardi 1er septembre pour une date du SOLARIS Tour. Dans une Adidas Arena pleine, le chanteur est venu défendre Piss In The Wind, son nouvel album, tout en revisitant les morceaux qui ont marqué les différentes étapes de sa carrière.
Dès les premières minutes, le ton est donné. PIXELATED KISSES ouvre le concert et laisse rapidement place à Sojourn, Ew, Sanctuary et LOVE YOU LESS. Plus qu’une simple succession de morceaux, le show est construit comme un ensemble, avec des transitions et des interludes qui permettent de passer d’une ambiance à l’autre.
Joji n’est pas forcément un artiste qui cherche à occuper la scène par de longues interactions avec le public. Ici, ce sont surtout les morceaux et la production qui parlent. La scénographie joue également un rôle important. La scène est entourée d’immenses écrans qui diffusent des visuels adaptés à chaque chanson, permettant de créer une ambiance différente au fil du concert. Les images accompagnent vraiment les morceaux et donnent au show une vraie identité visuelle.
Et forcément, certains titres provoquent des réactions particulières. Glimpse of Us en fait partie. Dès les premières notes, toute la salle se met à chanter. Le morceau garde cette même force plusieurs années après sa sortie et fonctionne particulièrement bien dans un contexte aussi grand.
La setlist permet d’ailleurs de voyager assez largement dans la discographie de Joji. Les nouveaux morceaux de Piss In The Wind trouvent leur place aux côtés de titres de BALLADS 1, Nectar et SMITHEREENS. On passe ainsi de Past Won’t Leave My Bed à YEAH RIGHT, puis de Will He à Pretty Boy, sans donner l’impression que les différentes périodes de sa carrière sont vraiment séparées.
Like You Do marque un nouveau moment plus posé. Le public connaît une nouvelle fois les paroles par cœur et la chanson prend une autre dimension en live. Quelques morceaux plus tard, Gimme Love et Die for You relancent progressivement le concert avant les derniers titres.
Puis arrive le rappel. Après 1AM FREESTYLE, Joji termine avec Slow Dancing in the Dark. Le morceau est probablement celui que beaucoup attendaient depuis le début, et il fonctionne comme une conclusion assez évidente à la soirée.
Au final, cette date parisienne du SOLARIS Tour ressemble surtout à une rencontre entre les différentes périodes de Joji. Les nouveaux morceaux ont leur place, les classiques restent évidemment indispensables, et l’ensemble est porté par une production qui donne au concert une vraie identité.
Ce n’est peut-être pas un show qui cherche constamment à impressionner, mais plutôt à créer une ambiance et à laisser les chansons faire leur travail. Et après plusieurs années d’absence en Europe, retrouver Joji sur une scène parisienne était déjà une bonne raison de se retrouver à l’Adidas Arena ce soir-là.

After several years without a proper European tour, Joji returned to Paris on Tuesday, September 1st, for a stop on the SOLARIS Tour. In a packed Adidas Arena, the singer came to perform tracks from Piss In The Wind, his latest album, while also revisiting songs from different stages of his career.
The tone is set from the very beginning. PIXELATED KISSES opens the show, quickly followed by Sojourn, Ew, Sanctuary and LOVE YOU LESS. Rather than simply moving from one song to the next, the show is built as a whole, with transitions and interludes helping to shift from one atmosphere to another.
Joji isn’t necessarily an artist who tries to fill the stage with long interactions with the crowd. Here, the music and production do most of the talking. The stage design also plays an important role, with huge screens surrounding the stage and displaying visuals tailored to each song, creating a different atmosphere throughout the show. The visuals work closely with the music and give the performance a strong visual identity.
Some songs naturally get a bigger reaction than others. Glimpse of Us is one of them. As soon as the first notes play, the entire venue starts singing along. The song still carries the same impact several years after its release, and it works particularly well in a venue of this size.
The setlist also covers a good part of Joji’s discography. The new tracks from Piss In The Wind sit alongside songs from BALLADS 1, Nectar and SMITHEREENS. Moving from Past Won’t Leave My Bed to YEAH RIGHT, then from Will He to Pretty Boy, the different eras of his career fit together naturally.
Like You Do brings another quieter moment to the show. Once again, the crowd knows every word by heart, giving the song a different feel in a live setting. A few songs later, Gimme Love and Die for You gradually pick up the pace again before the final part of the set.
Then comes the encore. After 1AM FREESTYLE, Joji closes the night with Slow Dancing in the Dark. It is probably the song many people have been waiting for all night, making it a fitting way to end the show.
Overall, this Paris stop of the SOLARIS Tour feels like a meeting point between the different eras of Joji’s career. The new songs have their place, the classics are still essential, and the production gives the whole show its own identity.
It may not be a show that constantly tries to impress, but rather one focused on creating an atmosphere and letting the songs speak for themselves. And after several years away from Europe, having Joji back on a Paris stage was reason enough to be at the Adidas Arena that night.
