Interview – Brittney Slayes – Unleash The Archers (VF & VO)

Genre, vraiment beaucoup. The Wind That Shapes The Land ».

[English Version]

Victor got the opportunity to talk to Brittney Slayes, singer of Unleash The Archers, about their new album « Abyss », already available on Napalm Records!

Chairyoursound: Your new album « Abyss » has been out since late august, what feedback did you get during those first weeks of your new album being released?

Brittney: The feedback was great! We had a lot of interview requests and great reviews from a few publications, so we were pretty excited. I think we were most concerned about how our fans would react to it, being that it is quite a bit different from « Apex », but most of them loved it. It takes a while to understand what we were going for with this album, and sometimes a few listens, but the reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, so we couldn’t be happier.

Chairyoursound: « Apex », your previous album is the first part of a story that continues in « Abyss », how is it to write a sequel for an album?

Brittney: The story for both albums was written at the same time, for the most part. In 2016 I wrote out a general overview for both records, and then broke those overviews down into ‘track- by-track’ explanations when it came time to write the music. Then the boys wrote the guitar riffs using the track-by-tracks to ensure that the music reflected the story as closely as possible. Once we had everything written and arranged, I wrote my vocal melodies and lyrics at the very end. Due to the fact that the story is already written, the lyric writing process was not too difficult; all I really had to do was make sure I told the story is a way that was not too literal but also still understandable.

Chairyoursound: What can you tell our readers about the overall story of both albums?

Brittney: The story follows our main character, whom we call The Immortal. He is cursed to serve whoever awakens him from his thousand-year slumbers, and in « Apex » he was awakened by our villain, The Matriarch, who promised to free him from the curse if he did as she asked. The Matriarch tasked The Immortal with finding her four sons and bringing them to her so she could kill them in a ritual to achieve immortality. After doing so, The Matriarch betrayed The Immortal, and instead of freeing him she sent him back to sleep, to wait for when she had need of him again. Fast forward to « Abyss »: The Immortal awakens on a starship out in space, and The Matriarch is nowhere to be seen. Eventually The Immortal discovers that his new master is in fact The Grandson of The Matriarch, and together they team up to rid the universe of The Matriarch’s evil once and for all.

Chairyoursound:You worked with Jacob Hansen for this album? What can you tell us about the recording process?

Brittney: Jacob is amazing, and a very talented engineer. We came to him with everything already written, and he worked with us to make sure that we performed our best on each and every single take. We spent three weeks tracking in Denmark then flew home to do the mixing and mastering digitally. Jacob worked his magic and made the record sound absolutely incredible. His ability to fit every instrument so perfectly into the mix is unbelievable, without him both « Apex » and « Abyss » would definitely not sound the way they do!

Chairyoursound:The sound on the album is quite diverse. What were the things you were listening to the most while writing the album? And did those songs impacted the album in some way?

Brittney: We were listening to a lot of synthwave during the writing process. Like, a lot of synth wave, so that was a big reason as to why there is synth on this album. I personally was also listening to a lot of black metal, so I think that may have affected the overall vibe in general. Andrew, who wrote all of the guitar riffs on this album, was listening to a lot of trad metal and rock, bands like Ghost and Queensrÿche, so I think that is where tracks like « Carry The Flame » and « The Wind That Shapes The Land » came from. We also wanted a more symphonic death metal feeling to this album, similar Soilwork and Fleshgod Apocalypse, so that is what you hear behind songs like « Afterlife » and « Return To Me ». We definitely did not allow any one genre to define our sound on this record and had a lot of fun incorporating our favorite sub-genres and styles into every track!

Chairyoursound:Did the pandemic impact your plans for this year?

Brittney: Oh yes, BIG TIME. We were in the middle of a tour when it hit in North America, and we had to drop everything and fly home immediately. The rest of the dates were cancelled and we lost a lot of money. Then every single festival we were booked to for the summer of 2020
was cancelled, including our first time at Wacken, and it was heartbreaking. Also, our European, Australian, and South American tours we had planned for the fall were all cancelled. The record release was pushed back by a month and would have been pushed back even further if I had not intervened. It even came to the point where we considered postponing the album till 2021 but then I argued that the pandemic would be a great time to release new music as people would be starving for it. I know I am! I check Spotify every Friday for new music and am always excited to hear when a band I love is working on something new. The virus has basically ruined the album release for us, but I am glad we went ahead with it anyway because our fans have really appreciated it .

Chairyoursound:What can you tell us about your plans in Europe for this album?

Brittney: Well if the virus doesn’t get in the way then we hope to do a headlining run through mainland Europe in the fall of 2021, as well as reschedule all of our festivals for the summer season. So far most of the festivals have been happy to rebook us so hopefully that continues!

Chairyoursound: As your last two albums are a story are you planning on one day playing both albums back to back to give the fans a full experience of this narrative?

Brittney: It could be a really cool idea to do a huge show in two parts where we do « Apex » for the first half and « Abyss » for the second, maybe with actors and everything! I think Queensryche did that with « Operation Mindcrime » I and II and I think that just sounds like the greatest thing ever. Could be worth doing as an anniversary show or something maybe! We would probably just do one show and record it as a DVD or something along those lines; touring with that big of a production would be incredibly difficult .

Chairyoursound:What new ideas of interaction with your fans did you try during those last months?

Brittney: We did a livestream album release show on August 22 nd , and then did a rerun of it a couple weeks later, and that was a lot of fun. It was extremely strange to play a show to a bunch of cameras but we did our best to recreate the most realistic live experience as possible for our
fans. We have also been hanging out on Twitch quite a bit which is a lot of fun! Mostly on our own personal channels (listed below) but the band started a channel as well and we hope to have some Q&A sessions of there or just jamspot hangouts with our fans. Personally, I have really enjoyed gaming on there and chatting with everyone, and Andrew writes music on the fly during his streams so they are incredibly entertaining! He is very
talented !

Chairyoursound: One last word to our readers about Abyss?

Brittney: Thank you so much for your support over the years and for listening to our new album! I definitely recommend listening to the whole « Abyss » record front to back at least once through, that is how we wrote it and that is how we meant for it to be played. Would also love to see you all on Twitch if you have a moment to spare! If not, hope to see you all on the road in 2021!
