⁹[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Le guerrier et son sensei sont de retour avec un nouveau groupe! Joel Hokka (ancien Blind Channel, chant) et Pauli Rantasalmi (ancien The Rasmus, guitare) sont rejoints par Jimi Aslak (batterie) pour former Hokka et leur premier album ensemble Via Miseria IV sera disponible dès demain (24 avril 2026) via Nuclear Blast Records.
« Blackbird in your backyard » ! Et ce premier opus s’ouvre avec un morceau déjà sorti à savoir Blackbird, c’est sombre, inquiétant avant que la voix de Joel ne s’élève pour scander les premiers mots de ce titre, les couplets nous permettent de retrouver cette ambiance pesante avant un refrain plus Heavy sur lequel le guitariste et le batteur s’en donnent à coeur joie et sur lequel le vocaliste nous enchante avec sa voix qu’on apprécie depuis déjà quelques années, c’est puissant et pour un début d’album c’est tout ce qu’on pouvait attendre pour se plonger dans leur univers. Et le bridge révèle toute ses capacité pour émouvoir, ça tape juste, ça tape fort et ça montre que notre Phénix ou plutôt notre Corbeau s’est bien relevé et est plus fort maintenant… C’est le premier single In The Darkness qui prend la suite et on plonge avec bonheur et nostalgie dans des sonorités qui rappellent The Rasmus ou encore HIM (His Infernal Majesty) notamment sur le refrain purement hymnique, essayez de vous enlever ce « In The Darkness » de la tête, c’est bien peine perdue mais ce morceau est sombre, on peut avoir l’impression qu’il évoque le sujet de la santé mentale et notamment celui de la dépression avec des paroles comme « ‘Cause the monster in my head is so alive,Holding my hand when I’m hopeless ,Leading me home with these voices« , « The monster is gone but the scars keep forming » (croyez-bien qu’ici, on connaît bien le sujet) ou encore le passage samplé en finnois en bref ce morceau est une catharsis autant pour le chanteur que pour ceux qui l’écouteront! On continue avec Death By Cupid’s Arrow, percutant à l’image de son refrain avec des couplets plus doux sur lesquels on se laisse porter par la voix de Joel et des mélodies indéniablement belles, ça parle de coeur brisé, d’amour sombre ou peut-être tout simplement de relations humaines ténébreuses (malheureusement pas dans le bon sens du terme).
Via Miseria est le titre qui donne son nom à l’album, ça semble plus sombre encore que les précédents tout en gardant son point fort : son refrain, sa rythmique, son sens de la mélodie et sa puissance. Peut-être le morceau le plus « simple » à appréhender pour l’instant. Heart Said No, c’est la mélancolie à l’état brut avec des paroles qu’on aimerait avoir tatoués sous les paupières pour les voir tout les jours tellement ils sonnent comme un réconfort ou directement sur la peau tellement elles sont parlantes « I found a beauty in the pain, I’m only happy when it rains. Melancholy is my home » qui rappelle aussi dans son intégralité et notamment dans ses parties de clavier, les anciens HIM (on y revient), introspectif et cathartique plaira autant aux grands garçons qui se cachent pour pleurer que pour les grandes filles qui font la même chose, quand être fort n’est plus une obligation mais une option! Un titre inédit dans cette vague de singles avec Bon Apetit, plus Rock dans son approche que les titres précédents plus orientés Nu Metal mais avec des riffs plus heavy et une ambiance presque plus creepy. Murder Ballad c’est LA ballade sombre, Dark Romantic, plus calme, plus apaisante mais pas moins puissante où on se laisse encore envoûtés par la voix de Joel mais un morceau aussi plus Symphonique, plus orchestral avec un côté presque cinématographique avant Angels Fall qui rappelle dès les riffs de l’intro des groupes comme Evanescence et sa dynamique. Votre serviteuse a trois empires romains musicaux : Iris des Goo Good Dolls, Ironic de Alanis Morisette et Kiss From A Rose de Seal…Devinez laquelle va clôturer ce premier opus? C’est donc bien une cover de Kiss From A Rose, une très grosse surprise mais qui (heureusement) n’en est pas une mauvaise ! Hokka s’est totalement reapproprié ce titre en en gardant son essence d’origine mais en y insufflant son énergie notamment dans le refrain qui va littéralement finir de nous scotcher!
Un phénix peut renaître de ses cendres…mais un corbeau peut également revenir d’entre les morts! Ce premier album de Hokka est une réussite totale , Joel semble bien plus épanoui et plus fort avec ses propres compositions et entouré de musiciens aussi exceptionnels. Take your crown, King of Crows !

« Blackbird in your backyard »! And this debut album opens with a previously released track, namely ‘Blackbird‘ – it’s dark and unsettling before Joel’s voice rises to chant the opening words of the song; the verses allow us to return to that heavy atmosphere before a heavier chorus where the guitarist and drummer really let loose, and where the vocalist enchants us with his voice that we’ve come to appreciate over the years; it’s powerful, and for an album opener, it’s everything we could have hoped for to immerse ourselves in their world. And the bridge reveals its full capacity to move us; it hits the mark, it hits hard, and it shows that our Phoenix—or rather, our Raven—has risen from the ashes and is stronger now… Next up is the first single, ‘In The Darkness’, and we dive in with joy and nostalgia into sounds reminiscent of The Rasmus or even HIM (His Infernal Majesty), particularly on the purely anthemic chorus; try getting ‘In The Darkness’ out of your head – it’s a lost cause – but this track is dark, you might get the impression it touches on the subject of mental health, particularly depression, with lyrics like « ‘Cause the monster in my head is so alive, Holding my hand when I’m hopeless, Leading me home with these voices« , “The monster is gone but the scars keep forming” (believe me, we know this subject well) or the Finnish-sampled passage – in short, this track is a catharsis for both the singer and those who listen to it! We continue with ‘Death By Cupid’s Arrow’, a powerful track much like its chorus, with softer verses where we’re carried along by Joel’s voice and undeniably beautiful melodies; it speaks of a broken heart, dark love, or perhaps simply of murky human relationships (unfortunately not in the best sense of the word).
Via Miseria is the title track of the album; it feels even darker than the previous tracks whilst retaining its strengths: its chorus, its rhythm, its sense of melody and its power. Perhaps the most “straightforward” track to grasp so far. “Heart Said No” is raw melancholy, with lyrics you’d want tattooed beneath your eyelids to see them every day—they’re such a comfort—or directly onto your skin, they’re so evocative: “I found a beauty in the pain, I’m only happy when it rains. Melancholy is my home » – which, in its entirety and particularly in its keyboard parts, is reminiscent of the early HIM (we’ll come back to that) – is introspective and cathartic, and will appeal just as much to grown men who hide away to cry as to grown women who do the same, when being strong is no longer an obligation but a choice! A brand-new track in this wave of singles,
« Bon Apetit » takes a more rock-oriented approach than the previous, Nu Metal-leaning tracks, yet features heavier riffs and an almost creepier atmosphere. ‘Murder Ballad’ is THE dark ballad, darkly romantic, calmer, more soothing but no less powerful, where we’re once again spellbound by Joel’s voice, yet a track that’s also more symphonic, more orchestral, with an almost cinematic quality, before ‘Angels Fall’, which, from the very first riffs of the intro, brings to mind bands like Evanescence and their dynamic sound. Yours truly has three musical Roman empires: ‘Iris’ by the Good Good Dolls, ‘Ironic’ by Alanis Morissette and ‘Kiss From A Rose’ by Seal… Guess which one closes this debut album? It is indeed a cover of ‘Kiss From A Rose’ – a huge surprise, but (thankfully) not a bad one! Hokka has completely made this track their own, retaining its original essence whilst infusing it with their own energy, particularly in the chorus, which will literally leave us spellbound!
A phoenix can rise from the ashes… but a raven can also return from the dead! Hokka’s debut album is a resounding success; Joel seems far more fulfilled and stronger with his own compositions, surrounded by such exceptional musicians. Take your crown, King of Crows!
