Halflives est un groupe italien actif depuis 2016. Après leur récente tournée avec Icon For Hire et la sortie de leur nouvel EP, Resilience, Linda Battilani, chanteuse du groupe, a répondu à quelques questions.
1- Peux-tu nous en dire davantage sur l’évolution de votre musique, du rock vers la pop alternative ? Est-ce lié à une évolution de vos influences musicales ?
Evidemment. Lorsque l’on grandit on se rend tous compte qu’en fait nos goûts ne restent pas les mêmes et nous évoluons avec eux. Dans mon cas, quand j’étais plus jeune, j’écoutais de la musique beaucoup plus heavy et maintenant j’écoute principalement de la pop, pop rock ou des bandes son.
2- Avec cette évolution, quel regard portes-tu sur vos anciennes chansons ?
Je les aime toujours, c’est ce que j’étais et c’est (et sera toujours) une part de mon voyage et de mon évolution donc je ne renierai jamais ce « vieux moi ».
3- Quelle est ta chanson préférée de l’EP Resilience ?
« Rockstar Everyday ». Quand mon producteur et moi avons commencé à l’écrire en studio, j’ai tout de suite été emballée. Ensuite, en fin de journée, je l’ai réécoutée encore et encore pendant que je rentrais du studio à mon hôtel et cela ne m’était pas arrivé depuis longtemps (avec une de mes propres chansons).
4- Comment s’est déroulé le featuring avec Kellin Quinn sur « Time Bomb » ? Est-ce qu’il vous a aidé à créer la chanson ?
Non, lorsque l’on est rentrés en contact avec Kellin, l’entièreté de l’EP Resilience était déjà écrit et mixé. On a entendu qu’il cherchait des groupes pour qui il pourrait prêter sa voix, donc on lui a envoyé un email avec littéralement 0 espoir. Mais après seulement 5 minutes il avait déjà répondu en disant qu’il adorait la chanson et il a demandé où on voulait qu’il chante. J’étais sans voix et extrêmement heureuse !
5- Le visuel de l’EP est une statue de serpent qui prend vie. Comment cet animal symbolise-t-il ta vision de la résistance ?
Les serpents muent, n’est-ce pas ? Ils continuent leur chemin avec une nouvelle et meilleure version d’eux-mêmes. Je ne pense pas qu’il y ait une image plus puissante pour représenter le voyage en 5 étapes que représente cet EP.
6- Le serpent est (évidemment) l’animal qui représente la chanson « Snake”, mais tu utilises également un léopard pour représenter la chanson « Rockstar Everyday » et tu relies un éléphant à « Hard To Break ». Quels animaux choisirais-tu pour représenter les deux autres chansons de cet EP ?
Bonne question ! Je dirais un taureau pour « Time Bomb » et, mon Dieu je ne sais pas, un chiot abandonné sous la pluie pour « One Bad Day » haha.
7- Avais-tu peur de travailler avec un vrai serpent pour le clip vidéo de « Snake » ?
Pas du tout ! J’étais curieuse vu que je n’en avais jamais rencontré un d’aussi près. Le petit serpent que l’on avait pour la vidéo était très calme et extrêmement coopératif. Au bout d’un moment, elle voulait juste qu’on la laisse tranquille et on l’a remise dans sa petite boite. Je recommencerais très certainement.
8- Sur « Hard To Break » on entend parfois une voix en fond qui peut dire par exemple « You’re not good enough? » (Vous n’êtes pas assez bonne ?). Est-ce quelque chose que tu peux penser de toi-même ou plutôt quelque chose que tu entends de la part d’autres personnes ? Comment tu gères ce genre de « messages » ?
Ce sont des choses que les gens pensent à mon sujet. Dans ce cas précis, c’est moi qui me moque d’eux disant cela à mon propos, pour ensuite leur montrer ce qu’ils manquent et leur prouver que je suis meilleure que ce qu’ils pensent de moi. C’est comme ça que je le gère. Je garde la tête haute.
9- Comment votre Patreon contribue-t-il au développement du groupe ?
Eh bien, les sessions en studio et les tournées sont plus chères que ce que l’on peut penser, particulièrement quand tu essaies de mettre la barre plus haut et de tenir la compétition avec ce qui se fait en ce moment ! Le Patreon me donne la chance de me concentrer à 100% sur Halflives ; il en résulte que je produis davantage de démos pour les amener ensuite en studio, je peux payer le studio et ensuite je peux jouer la musique que j’ai écrite en tournée, et peut-être même contribuer à certaines dépenses lors des tournées.
En gros, le Patreon contribue directement à tout ce qui est essentiel, sans quoi tout serait beaucoup plus lent et probablement de bien moindre qualité.
10- Est-ce que le Patreon vous aide à renforcer vos liens avec vos fans ?
Oui, et j’en suis très reconnaissante. Comme c’est une plus petite communauté, je peux mieux me concentrer sur la communication avec les fans, ne serait-ce que par message privé, mais surtout pendant des sessions vidéo en direct. Les sentiments que j’ai quand se déroulent ces rendez-vous mensuels, c’est comme se rassembler avec de vieux amis : on a même des private jokes !

11- A propos de la tournée avec Icon For Hire, comment c’était ? Est-ce que tu as de bons souvenirs en particulier ?
Eh bien, le concert de Prague a été de loin mon préféré. Le moment où j’ai reçu Nagini (un serpent en peluche, cadeau d’une fan) pendant que j’étais en train de chanter « Snake » était vraiment le point culminant de la tournée. Aussi, le public était déchaîné et j’ai rencontré beaucoup de nouvelles personnes, j’ai adoré !
Après le concert, on est resté dans la salle parce qu’il y avait une fête sur le thème des années 80, on a dansé comme si personne ne regardait, on a bu un peu et ri beaucoup. Je chéris beaucoup de souvenirs cools de cette soirée, la dernière nuit joyeuse avant que le drama autour du Coronavirus commence à détruire la bonne ambiance de la tournée et du monde entier.

12- Comment est arrivé le duo avec Icon For Hire sur la version acoustique de « Too Loud » ? Comment c’était de chanter avec Ariel ?
Je lui ai envoyé un message sur Instagram avant le début de la tournée pour la remercier de nous emmener avec elle et elle a répondu en me demandant si je voulais chanter « Too Loud » avec elle. J’ai bien évidemment accepté et ta-daa ! C’était toujours super de partager ce moment avec eux toutes les nuits, je suis contente qu’elle m’ait demandé !
13- Comment le public a réagi à vos nouvelles chansons en live, en particulier à celles qui n’étaient pas encore sorties ?
Ils ont très bien réagi ! Particulièrement pendant « Snake » et « One Bad Day » , je voyais beaucoup de visages qui ressentaient vraiment la musique et qui appréciaient le moment. Cela m’a vraiment fait vraiment sentir accomplie.
14- Comment les restrictions liées au Coronavirus impactent-elles vos futures activités ?
Eh bien, elles impactent tout assez lourdement. On ne sait pas vraiment ce qui va arriver donc j’ai l’impression que notre futur est en suspens et c’est assez déprimant.
15- Quels sont vos plans pour le futur ?
On a une tournée prévue pour l’été comprenant une apparition dans un festival au Royaume-Uni. On a quelques options de tournées pour l’automne aussi, rien d’encore confirmé mais 2020 (avant le corona) devait être une année très chargée pour Halflives.
On prévoyait aussi de retourner en studio plus tard dans l’année, mais comme notre producteur est sur Milan et qu’on ne peut pas trop se déplacer en ce moment, on verra pour ce point !

ENGLISH VERSION
Halflives is an Italian band, active since 2016. After their recent tour with Icon For Hire and the release of their new EP, Resilience, Linda Battilani, singer of the band, answered some questions.
1- Can you tell us more about the evolution of your music, from rock to alternative pop ? Is it linked to an evolution of your musical influences?
Obviously. When growing up we all find out that actually our tastes don’t stay the same and we evolve alongside them. In my case when I was younger I used to listen to way heavier music and now I mostly listen to pop, pop rock or soundtracks.
2- With this evolution, how do you look back on your previous songs?
I still like them, that’s who I was and it is (and will always be) a part of my journey and my evolution so I would never deny the « old me ».
3- What is your favorite song from Resilience?
« Rockstar Everyday ». When my producer and I started to write it in the studio it pumped me right away. Then in the evening I played it over and over on my way back to the hotel from the studio and this hadn’t happened to me in a long time (with one of my own songs).
4-How was the featuring with Kellin on « Time Bomb »? Did he help you with the creation of the song?
No when we got in touch with Kellin the whole « Resilience » EP was entirely written and mixed. We heard that he was looking for some bands to do guest vocals for, so we sent him an email with literally 0 hopes but after just 5 minutes he had already replied saying he was digging the song and asking where we wanted him to sing. I was speechless and extremely happy!
5- The visual of the EP is a snake, coming into life from a statue. How does this animal symbolize your vision of the resilience?
Snakes change skin don’t they? They carry on as a new and better version of themselves. I don’t think there’s a most powerful image to represent the accomplishment of the journey through the 5 steps.
6- If a snake is (obviously) the animal representing the song « Snake », a leopard is used for the visual of the song « Rockstar Everyday » and you link and elephant to « Hard To Break », what animals would you choose for the two other songs of your EP ?
Nice question! I’d say a bull for Time Bomb and God I don’t know, an abandoned puppy under the rain for One Bad Day haha.
7- Were you afraid to work with a real snake on your music video « Snake »?
Not at all! I was curious as I had never met one so close. The lil snake we had for the video was very quiet and extremely cooperative. At a certain point she just wanted to be left alone and put back in her small box. I certainly would do it again.
8- On « Hard To Break » we can sometimes hear a back voice saying for example « You’re not good enough? ». Is it something you can think about yourself or something you can hear from people? How do you manage those « messages »?
It’s things people think about me. In that specific case it’s me mocking them saying this to myself, to then later show them what they’re missing out and prove them that I’m better than what they think I am. That’s how I manage. I stand up tall.
9- How does the Patreon contribute to the development of the band?
Well, studio sessions and tours are more expensive than what you’d think, especially when you’re trying to raise the quality level bar and be at the level of the competition out there! Patreon gives me the chance to focus 100% on Halflives ; as a result of that I produce more demos to later bring to the studio, I can pay for the studio and then I can take the music I’ve written on tour, and maybe contribute to some of the expenses of the tour.
Basically Patreon contributes directly to the essentials, without it everything would be much slower and probably would be of a far worse quality.
10- Does the Patreon helps you to have a stronger link with your fans?
Yes and I’m grateful for that. As it’s a smaller community I can focus better on communicating with fans, even just via private message but mostly during the live hangouts. The feeling I have when I attend those monthly appointments is like hanging out with some old friends: we even have private jokes!

11- Concerning the tour with Icon For Hire, how was it? Do you have any special memories?
Well the show in Prague was hands down my favourite. The moment I received Nagini (a snake plush present from a fan) while I was performing Snake was really the highlight of the tour. Also the crowd was wild and I met so many new people, loved it!
After the show we stayed at the venue as there was an 80s-themed party, we danced as if no one was watching, drank a bit and laughed a lot. I’m cherishing really cool memories from that night, the last happy night before the coronadrama started to destroy the good mood on tour and all around the world.
12- How came the duet with Icon For Hire on the acoustic version of « Too Loud »? How was it to sing with Ariel?
I texted her on Instagram before the beginning of the tour to thank her for bringing us on tour with them and she replied asking if I wanted to sing « Too Loud » with her. I obviously accepted and ta-daa! It was always nice to share that moment with them every night, I’m glad she asked me!

13- How did the audience react to your new songs live, especially those which were not out yet?
They reacted really well! Especially during Snake and One Bad Day I was seeing many faces really feeling the music and enjoying the moment. It really made me feel accomplished.
14- How are the restrictions due to Coronavirus impacting your future activities?
Well, they are impacting everything pretty heavily. We don’t really know what’s gonna happen so I feel like our future is on hold, and it’s quite depressing.
15- What are your plans for the future?
We have a tour scheduled for the summer alongside a festival appearance in the UK. We have some tour options for the fall as well, nothing confirmed yet but 2020 (before corona) was supposed to be a pretty busy year for Halflives.
We were also planning to go back to the studio later this year, but as our producer is based in Milan and we can’t really go anywhere at the moment we will have to see about that!
