[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Pour la première fois de leur carrière, les géants de Anthrax et Mastodon débarquent à Bordeaux pour un show exceptionnel! Après avoir rempli le Bikini la veille à Toulouse, c’est au Rocher de Palmer que les deux formations ont posées leurs valises. A l’origine, on ne devait assister qu’à trois morceaux de chaque set des deux groupes mais en arrivant sur place, on découvre que (fort heureusement) nous pouvons assister à l’intégralité des concerts ce qui est plus simple pour écrire un article! Et la soirée commence par Mastodon, après une intro sur Crazy Train de Ozzy, le groupe débarque pour débuter son set avec Tread Lightly, tout de suite l’énergie du groupe arrive à convaincre les premiers rangs composés de leurs fans. Troy Sanders (basse/chant) prendra la parole à de nombreuses reprises ce soir autant pour saluer le public et rappeler que c’est leur premier concert dans la capitale du vin ou encore pour introduire Your Ghost Again qu’il dédie à la mémoire de Brent Hinds (décédé l’an dernier). Le frontman ne manque pas d’humour tout comme Brann Dailor (batterie/chant), en démontre leurs quelques échanges entre eux mais aussi les introductions par Troy de morceaux comme « C’est le numéro 2 de notre album Leviathan sorti en 2023, ça s’appelle I Am Ahab » très bien accueilli par la fosse tout comme Megalodon, More Than I Could Chew ou encore Blood And Thunder qui va venir terminer le set. Mastodon reste un grand groupe et malgré un set qui tirait un peu en longueur, leur énergie positive et leurs compositions ont été une belle mise en bouche pour la soirée!
Mais évidemment le groupe que tout le monde attend, c’est bien sûr Anthrax! Leur entrée sur scène se fait après The Number Of The Beast de Iron Maiden chanté par le public et I Can’t Turn You Loose de Otis Redding mais la version des Blues Brothers. Le public renvoie directement son énergie à la formation à peine sont-ils sur les planches pour jouer Among The Living qui va provoquer du remous dans la fosse! Joey Belladonna (chant) prend plaisir à interagir avec le public autant en les faisant chanter qu’en les faisant réagir à peu près à tout ce qu’il dit. Scott Ian (guitare) prendra lui aussi la parole pour quelques mots de français « ça va? Moi ça va super grâce à vous!« . Le frontman introduira presque chaque morceau à commencer par Got The Time, leur cover de Joe Jackson, son « Do you love Thrash Metal? » avant de lancer Metal Thrashing Mad ou encore rappeler le fait qu’ils sont « vieux » en disant que Medusa est sorti en 1984. Mais en attendant on ne se lasse pas non plus des classiques comme Madhouse, Caught In A Mosh ou Indians mais on a aussi droit au nouveau single du groupe It’s For The Kids, Joey en profitant pour faire la promo du nouvel album du groupe qui sortira le 18 septembre prochain! Evidemment que serait un concert d’Anthrax sans leur cover de Antisocial de Trust c’est bien sûr pour la fin que le groupe nous a réservé cette dernière avant de nous laisser sur I Am The Law. Là où Mastodon avait souffert de longueurs, Anthrax nous a livré un set énergique et plein de chaleur humaine et on espère les revoir bientôt dans nos contrées!
A noter que sur ce set, Charlie Benante (batterie) n’était pas présent (mais sa batterie oui avec les Funko Pop à son image) en raison d’une blessure à la main, il est remplacé par Darby Todd tout comme la veille à Toulouse.
[ENGLISH VERSION] For the first time in their careers, the giants Anthrax and Mastodon are coming to Bordeaux for an exceptional show! After packing out the Bikini the night before in Toulouse, the two bands set up shop at the Rocher de Palmer. Thanks to Emma at the Rocher de Palmer and Gérard Drouot Production for the press passes.
Originally, we were only supposed to catch three songs from each band’s set, but upon arriving at the venue, we discovered that (thankfully) we could see the entire concerts—which makes writing an article much easier! The evening kicked off with Mastodon. After an intro featuring Ozzy’s “Crazy Train,” the band took the stage to open their set with “Tread Lightly,” and their energy immediately won over the front rows packed with their fans. Troy Sanders (bass/vocals) speaks up numerous times tonight—whether to greet the audience and remind them that this is their first concert in the wine capital, or to introduce “Your Ghost Again,” which he dedicates to the memory of Brent Hinds (who passed away last year). The frontman has a great sense of humor, as does Brann Dailor (drums/vocals), as evidenced by their banter with one another and by Troy’s introductions to songs like “This is track number 2 from our 2023 album *Leviathan*; it’s called ‘I Am Ahab’”—which was very well received by the crowd, as were “Megalodon,” “More Than I Could Chew,” and “Blood And Thunder,” which wrapped up the set. Mastodon remains a great band, and despite a set that dragged on a bit, their positive energy and compositions were a great appetizer for the evening!
But of course, the band everyone’s been waiting for is, without a doubt, Anthrax! They take the stage after the crowd sings along to Iron Maiden’s “The Number of the Beast” and Otis Redding’s “I Can’t Turn You Loose”—the Blues Brothers’ version, that is. The crowd immediately sends its energy back to the band the moment they hit the stage to play “Among the Living,” which sends the pit into a frenzy! Joey Belladonna (vocals) clearly enjoys interacting with the crowd, both by getting them to sing along and by eliciting reactions to just about everything he says. Scott Ian (guitar) also takes the mic to say a few words in French: “How’s it going? I’m doing great, thanks to you guys!” The frontman introduces nearly every song, starting with “Got The Time,” their cover of Joe Jackson’s track, and his signature line, “Do you love thrash metal?” before launching into “Metal Thrashing Mad” or reminding the crowd that they’re “old” by noting that *Medusa* was released in 1984. But in the meantime, we never get tired of classics like “Madhouse,” “Caught In A Mosh,” or “Indians,” and we’re also treated to the band’s new single, “It’s For The Kids,” with Joey taking the opportunity to promote the band’s new album, set for release on September 18! Of course, what would an Anthrax concert be without their cover of Trust’s “Antisocial”? The band saved this one for the very end, before closing out the show with “I Am The Law.” Whereas Mastodon’s set had dragged in places, Anthrax delivered an energetic performance full of warmth, and we hope to see them again soon in our neck of the woods!
It should be noted that Charlie Benante (drums) was not present for this set (though his drum set was there, along with Funko Pop figures modeled after him) due to a hand injury; he was replaced by Darby Todd, just as he had been the previous night in Toulouse.
