[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Doodswens s’apprête à sortir son deuxième album studio sobrement intitulé Doodswens ce vendredi 17 avril 2026 via le label Svart Records. Une petite présentation s’impose : Doodswens est un groupe de Black Metal néerlandais fondé en 2017 par I. (chant/batterie), le nom du groupe signifie littéralement « désir de mort » mais il faut voir plus loin que sa signification littérale : ne pas abandonner et revenir en force après avoir côtoyée la Mort de près. En live, I. assure la batterie et le chant et elle est rejoint par R. à la basse et P. à la guitare (ce qui donne R.I.P).
Ce nouvel opus s’ouvre avec Driven By Death, c’est brut, pesant autant au niveau de la production, que de l’ambiance, des parties instrumentales ou du chant de I. qui va venir prendre aux tripes. Les Riffs de P. et la rythmique de la batteuse/chanteuse feront headbanger certains tout en gardant une certaine cohésion avec le genre musical exploré par la formation. Ce premier morceau est intégralement interprété en néerlandais et évoque le fait de vivre sans regret et d’être aux commandes de cette dernière, c’est très powerful et ça change de ce qu’on peut entendre dans le BM, ce genre de texte y apporte une touche presque…moderne? On continue la découverte de Doodswens avec Verrot cette fois-ci en anglais ET en néerlandais, un mélange intéressant, on parle ici de Satan et de l’Enfer un peu comme un refuge , le tempo change à quelques reprises ici mais ne perd pas ses racines avec des parties instrumentales qui rappellent des groupes plus Old-School et qui semblent presque…entraînants? The Black Flame commence de manière inquiétante le tout renforcé par le chant et la rythmique, I. se place en véritable maîtresse de cérémonie avec son chant glacial et nous parle encore de la Bête (Satan) là encore on peut avoir l’impression de voir le Satanisme comme un réconfort ou un cocon mais un cocon sombre et un peu glauque quand même.
These Wounds Never Healed ralentit un peu le rythme, c’est plus lent et c’est littéralement le genre de morceau qui transporte, on ferme les yeux et on se laisse tout simplement porté, le texte sonne presque d’une manière poétique et évoque ce qui pourrait s’apparenter à la dépression ou tout du moins le sujet de la santé mentale (« The darkness that surrounds you.The beauty in your pain Laying right besides you A soul – A twin – A flame »). Le titre a beau être en anglais mais She Carries The Curse est une fois de plus en néerlandais là encore le tempo est plus lent, plus contemplatif, on entend les bruits de la pluie et de l’orage, ce nouveau morceau reste dans la continuité du précédent, on se laisse juste porter par la musique de Doodswens. On approche doucement de la fin de l’album avec Devils Stone, plus raw, plus old-school et là encore les deux langues se mêlent pour n’en former presque qu’une seule : celle de I. (ou celle de Doodwsens tout simplement). Et on termine avec Vlaamse Vloek qui reste là encore dans la même veine que le précédent, le genre de titre froid mais qui fera bouger les têtes en live avec sa rythmique saccadée et dynamique.
Doodswens a été une excellente découverte avec ce deuxième album. Le groupe s’approprie les codes du Black Metal Old-School gardant le côté brut et authentique de cette mouvance tout en y apportant sa propre identité. Amateurs de Black Metal brut et sans compromis, plongez-vous dans leur univers sans hésitation!

[ENGLISH VERSION] Doodswens are set to release their second studio album, simply titled Doodswens, this Friday, 17 April 2026, via Svart Records. A brief introduction is in order: Doodswens is a Dutch black metal band founded in 2017 by I. (vocals/drums); the band’s name literally means ‘death wish’, but one must look beyond its literal meaning: never giving up and coming back stronger after having had a close brush with Death. Live, I. handles the drums and vocals and is joined by R. on bass and P. on guitar (which spells out R.I.P).
This new album opens with ‘Driven By Death’; it’s raw, heavy in terms of both production and atmosphere, the instrumental parts and I.’s vocals, which really hit you in the gut. P.’s riffs and the drummer/singer’s rhythm section will have some people headbanging, whilst maintaining a certain cohesion with the musical genre explored by the band. This opening track is performed entirely in Dutch and speaks of living without regret and being in control of one’s life; it’s very powerful and offers a change from what we usually hear in black metal, with lyrics that bring an almost… modern touch? We continue our exploration of Doodswens with ‘Verrot’, this time in English AND Dutch – an interesting mix. Here, the lyrics speak of Satan and Hell, somewhat like a refuge; the tempo shifts a few times but never loses its roots, with instrumental sections reminiscent of more old-school bands that seem almost… catchy? ‘The Black Flame’ begins in a disturbing manner, reinforced by the vocals and rhythm section; I. takes centre stage as a true mistress of ceremonies with her icy vocals and speaks to us once more of the Beast (Satan). Here again, one gets the impression of seeing Satanism as a comfort or a cocoon, though a dark and somewhat gloomy one nonetheless.
“These Wounds Never Healed” slows the pace down a bit; it’s slower and is literally the kind of track that transports you – you close your eyes and simply let yourself be carried away. The lyrics sound almost poetic and evoke what might be described as depression, or at the very least the subject of mental health (“The darkness that surrounds you. The beauty in your pain Laying right beside you A soul – A twin – A flame”). The track may be in English, but She Carries The Curse is once again in Dutch; here too the tempo is slower, more contemplative; you can hear the sounds of rain and a storm; this new track follows on from the previous one, and you simply let yourself be carried away by Doodswens’ music. We’re slowly approaching the end of the album with Devils Stone, which is rawer, more old-school, and here again the two languages blend to form almost a single one: that of I. (or simply that of Doodswens). And we finish with Vlaamse Vloek, which again follows in the same vein as the previous track—the kind of cold track that will still get heads nodding at a live show with its jerky, dynamic rhythm.
Doodswens have been an excellent discovery with this second album. The band embraces the codes of Old-School Black Metal, retaining the raw and authentic side of the genre whilst bringing their own identity to it. Fans of raw, uncompromising Black Metal, dive into their world without hesitation!
