[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Le groupe de Moderne Metal, Defences est de retour avec son troisième album studio Shadowlight disponible depuis ce vendredi 8 novembre via Long Branch Records. Defences est composé de Cherry Duesbury (Chant), William Young (Scream/Claviers), Calum Wilmot (guitare), Owen Hughes-Holland (basse) et Kyle Park (batterie).
C’est le single The Curse qui va ouvrir ce nouvel album avec ses riffs lourds et la voix de la chanteuse Cherry qui va transporter l’auditeur tandis que les hurlements de William (claviériste) vont faire ressortir toute la colère contenue dans l’instrumental. La dualité des deux voix est particulièrement intéressante, là où Cherry va incarner la lumière, William va lui interpréter le côté plus sombre de Defences. Gold In The Dark poursuit avec un côté plus sombre mais également plus mélodique là où The Curse explorait plus dans le style Metalcore là on a affaire à un morceau évoluant plus dans le Metal Moderne avec ses touches presque Electro même si le scream du vocaliste est toujours bien présent notamment quand il s’exprime presque a capella pour donner une autre dimension à la composition. Perish est le genre de morceau qui en fera heabanger plus d’un sur son intro avant de reprendre sur un premier couplet plus calme et un refrain très catchy, on va également entendre pour la première fois, la chanteuse screamer sur un morceau et sa puissance vocale est indéniable tout comme dans son chant clair. Un morceau qui devrait plaire aux amateurs de groupes comme Spiritbox!
Breathe It In a une construction assez classique qui pourrait sembler répétitive mais le travail sur les ambiances et les mélodies apporte un plus indéniable qui sauve le morceau. Inspirit va ralentir le rythme effréné emprunté par le groupe sur les titres précédents, ce nouveau morceau pourrait être considéré comme une ballade sombre sans aucune difficulté avec la profondeur des voix. The Almost revient à quelque chose de plus classique comme Breathe It In avec un refrain qui rentrera vite dans les mémoires et sera à coup sûr repris par les fosses en live avant le Breakdown avec les screams de William qui devrait tout retourner sur son passage. Le dernier titre qui donne son nom à l’album, Shadowlight , évoque la confiance en soi, le fait d’apprendre à s’aimer avec ses démons et son côté sombre, un dernier morceau très puissant autant dans ses paroles que dans son instrumental :

If I can’t love myself, can’t love anyone else

Defences a été une des très belles découvertes de cette année et ce troisième album est très agréable à écouter avec son lot de morceaux puissants et l’utilisation des mélodies, sûrement quelque chose à voir en live rapidement (en espérant un passage en France).

[ENGLISH VERSION] Modern metal band Defences are back with their third studio album Shadowlight, available from Friday 8 November via Long Branch Records. Defences is made up of Cherry Duesbury (vocals), William Young (scream/keyboards), Calum Wilmot (guitar), Owen Hughes-Holland (bass) and Kyle Park (drums).
The single The Curse opens the new album with its heavy riffs and Cherry‘s voice, which transports the listener, while William‘s (keyboard) screams bring out all the anger contained in the instrumental. The duality of the two voices is particularly interesting, with Cherry embodying the light and William interpreting the darker side of Defences. Gold In The Dark continues with a darker but more melodic side, whereas The Curse explored more of a Metalcore style, here we’re dealing with a track evolving more into Modern Metal with its almost Electro touches, even if the vocalist’s scream is still very much present, particularly when he expresses himself almost a capella to give another dimension to the composition. Perish is the kind of track that’ll have more than one listener on the edge of their seats with its intro, before picking up with a calmer first verse and a catchy chorus. It’s also the first time we’ve heard the singer scream on a track, and her vocal power is undeniable, as is her clear singing. A track that should please fans of bands like Spiritbox!
Breathe It In has a fairly classic construction that might seem repetitive, but the work on ambiences and melodies adds an undeniable plus that saves the track. Inspirit slows down the band’s frenetic pace on previous tracks, and this new track could be considered a dark ballad without any difficulty with the depth of the vocals. The Almost return to something more classic like Breathe It In, with a chorus that is sure to be remembered and taken up by the pits live before Breakdown, with William‘s screams that are sure to turn everything upside down. The last track on the album, Shadowlight, is about self-confidence, learning to love yourself with your demons and your dark side, a powerful final track both lyrically and instrumentally:

Defences have been one of this year’s great discoveries, and their third album is a pleasure to listen to, with its powerful tracks and use of melody. It’s sure to be something to see live soon (and hopefully in France).
