[English Below] Crystal Lake était de retour en France ce samedi 22 juin au Petit Bain (Paris). Une date attendue par les fans puisque cela faisait un petit moment que le groupe de Metalcore japonais n’était pas venu dans nos contrées. La dernière tournée de Crystal Lake en Europe datait de 2019 et depuis lors la formation du groupe a drastiquement changée (Ryo Kinoshita, ex chanteur est parti et plusieurs des musiciens de tournée sont devenus des membres a part entière!). Nous avions donc hâte de voir en live le nouveau Crystal Lake porté par la voix de John Robert Centomino (ex The Last Ten Seconds Of Life).
À l’occasion de sa tournée, les japonais étaient accompagnés de plusieurs groupes différents selon les pays dans lesquels ils jouaient. C’est les français de Ashen et FreeHowling qui étaient chargés d’ouvrir le bal pour cette date parisienne.
Les portes du Petit Bain ouvrent à 18h30 et, déjà, les premiers spectateurs prennent place dans cette salle qui deviens, décidément, familière pour les Japonais (c’est la troisième fois que le groupe s’y produit).
C’est FreeHowling qui arrive sur scène en premier à 19h pétante, le tout habillé en streetwear ce qui surprend une partie du public qui ne les connaissaient pas. Le groupe de Hardcore parisien très heureux de se produire « à domicile » lance les hostilités avec des titres très énergiques tels que « Far » et « Blazed« . Guillaume, le chanteur, invite le public à ouvrir le pit qui se fait timide au début de leur set. Sur scène il montre l’exemple en réalisant du two steps pendant les passages instrumentaux.
« Usagi » et « Hope!! » suivent à un rythme effréné et FreeHowling arrive bel et bien à chauffer la salle ! Le groupe accueille sur scène Pierre (Mirabelle) et Vincent (NDKH) pour un feat haut en couleurs et complètement inattendu.
FreeHowling enchaîne sur « P.N.A » et « Scars » . Guillaume fait un Big up à Aaron de Ten56 puisque « Scars » est un feat avec lui et contre toute attente le chanteur de Ten pourtant présent dans la salle ne monte pas sur scène !
Le set du groupe de Hardcore se poursuit avec « Hayabusa » puis « The bodies fall just like the leaves » qui comporte toute une partie rappée en français. Oruna, le chanteur de Brok’n’Face arrive sur scène pour un nouveau feat inespéré et décidément très cool. FreeHowling est clairement venu avec pleins de petites surprises ce soir.
Les parisiens finissent leur set par « Break » et invitent les spectateurs à les rencontrer à leur stand de merch à la fin du concert.
Une petite attente et c’est Ashen qui entre sur scène à son tour dès 20h00. Le groupe de Metalcore, lui aussi parisien, installe dès son arrivée une ambiance totalement différente de FreeHowling et on voit bien que de nombreuses personnes avaient fait le déplacement pour les voir ce soir. Après une courte introduction le groupe lance « Angel » suivie de « Chimera« . Dans le public on commence à manquer d’espace et les fans du groupe chantent les paroles en choeur.
Ashen annonce « Sacrifice » sorti récemment en feat avec Aaron de Ten56 et, cette fois-ci, le chanteur viens sur scène chanter ses parties sur le morceau. Le public est ravi et au milieu de la fosse, ça commence à se bousculer.
Une courte pause s’ensuit durant laquelle Clément explique que la première date d’Ashen au Petit Bain était pour l’ouverture de Novelists il y a quelques temps. Cette fois-ci le groupe est très content d’ouvrir pour Crystal Lake et espère que la date sera mémorable pour le public.
« Désiré » suit juste après cette prise de parole et à la fin du titre les musiciens quittent la scène pour ne laisser que le chanteur pendant une interlude à l’ambiance mélancolique et planante. On y apprécie grandement cette mise en valeur du timbre de Clément puis Tristan revient à la batterie sur la fin de l’interlude afin de donner un impact encore différent.
Au retour des autres membres de la formation Ashen lance « Sapiens » puis une reprise de « Smells like teen spirit » de Nirvana. Tout le public chante les paroles de ce titre culte et le passage de Ashen arrive à sa fin avec « Outlier« .
Pendant le set d’Ashen la fosse du Petit Bain s’est bel et bien remplie et l’ambiance est devenue plus festive encore. Pendant la pause avant que Crystal Lake arrive, la salle ne désemplie pas, bien au contraire ! Les fans sont de plus impatients de voir les japonais monter sur scène.
Dès son arrivée Crystal Lake est acclamé par son public qui a répondu présent au rendez-vous pour cette date au Petit Bain. Les membres du groupe semblent très heureux d’être de retour et leur énergie est communicative. C’est tout sourire que la formation entame son set par « Prometheus » un titre relativement ancien (2015) qui date de « The Sign« . Les fans de longue date sont ravis et le groupe aussi, les membres de Crystal Lake interagissent beaucoup avec le public. Dès le premier son l’ambiance est folle et Yudai, le guitariste à notre droite, se jette dans le public la gratte en main.
« SIX FEET UNDER » est lancé, sans pause, juste derrière. Le public réagit au quart de tour. De notre côté on est immensément contents de retrouver dans le set de ce soir un titre de « True North » (2016) qui fait partie de nos albums préférés depuis plusieurs années ! La prestation vocale de John est, certes, différente de celle de Ryo (ex chanteur, actuellement chez KNOSIS) mais on se prend vite au jeu et le nouveau Crystal Lake est décidément top.
Les titres se succédent quasi sans interruption, aucun répit n’est accordé et dans le public on a vite très chaud. Malgré tout on entends des « Ça fait longtemps » et des « Bienvenues ». Le groupe est très réceptif face à cet engouement, les membres de Crystal sont excessivement souriants et montrent qu’ils sont réellement contents d’être là. Aux premiers rangs c’est limite difficile de ne pas prendre des coups de guitare tant Yudai joue près du bord de la scène et on imagine que c’est la même chose du côté gauche avec TJ.
Les singles « Machina » et « Mephisto » s’enchainent dans la foulée, l’ambiance ne redescend à aucun moment dans un pit plus mouvementé que jamais.
« Aeon« , single de l’album « Helix » (2019) est lancé derrière et la hype instantanée dans le public qui montre sa joie en chantant les paroles dès le début du son. Le titre en question étant très saccadé la fosse gagne encore en violence et les crowdsurfers font leur apparition dans le show. Ils montent sur scène pour se jeter de nouveau dans le public (le Petit Bain ne possédant pas de fosse photo avec une barrière, le public est à même la scène).
Les titres s’enchaînent toujours à une vitesse folle, on a le droit à l’incroyable combo de « Denial » et « Rebirth« , deux morceaux sortis il y a peu (2023) et avec lesquels le groupe de Metalcore japonais était revenu en force avec son nouveau chanteur. On apprécie fortement cette performance en live qui diffère quelque peu du reste du set puisque John ne reprend pas les parties chantées par Ryo. On sens un investissement différent surtout quand « Blüdgod » suit juste derrière. Le dernier single en date du groupe n’a que quelques semaines mais le public hurle en coeur une partie des paroles. Les japonais constatent que leur dernière sortie à conquis son auditorat.
« Lost in forever » de l’album Helix suit derrière. On assiste toujours au défilé des crowdsurfers (qui ne s’arrêtera plus jusqu’à la fin du concert!)
« OPEN WATER » un titre originalement sorti en 2011 est joué juste derrière par les japonais. Une vague de nostalgie pour les fans les plus anciens se fait ressentir. Pourtant l’album « THE VOYAGES » avait été re-enregistré en 2020. On est excessivement contents que le groupe décide de jouer des titres anciens, cela fait toujours plaisir !
Le set de Crystal Lake, plus que sportif dans la fosse, touche malheureusement bientôt à sa fin. Et les japonais nous clôturent cette soirée de la meilleure des manière en sortant deux titres iconique de leur discographie. L’ambiance est plus que folle pendant « Watch me burn » (2020) et l’extraordinaire « Apollo » (2019).
Crystal Lake ne jouera pas de rappel ce soir mais sa setlist bien que courte (douze titres) nous aura grandement satisfaits. Le groupe remercie son public encore une fois, on ressens les émotions des membres très heureux de tourner en Europe, et on le sait, les japonais ont toujours aimé se produire chez nous. On aura attendu ce retour plusieurs années mais l’ambiance incroyable et la prestation du groupe en valaient la peine ! Crystal Lake poursuit sa tournée en Europe avec notamment sa participation au Graspop ou encore au Hellfest !
[ENGLISH VERSION] Crystal Lake was back in France this Saturday June 22nd at Le Petit Bain (Paris). A date awaited by fans since it had been a while the Japanese metalcore group had visited our region. Crystal Lake‘s last tour in Europe was in 2019 and since then the band’s lineup has changed drastically (Ryo Kinoshita, former singer left and several of the tour musicians became full members).
We were therefore looking forward to seeing the new Crystal Lake live carried by the voice of John Robert Centomino (ex The Last Ten Seconds Of Life).
During their tour, the Japanese were accompanied by several different groups depending on the countries in which they played. It was the French from Ashen and FreeHowling who were responsible for opening the ball for this Parisian date.
The doors of the Petit Bain open at 6:30 p.m. and, already, the first spectators are taking their seats in this room which is becoming decidedly familiar to the Japanese (this is the third time the group has performed there).
It’s FreeHowling who arrives on stage first at 7 p.m. sharp, all dressed in streetwear, which surprises some of the audience who didn’t know them. The Parisian hardcore group, very happy to be performing « at home », launches hostilities with very energetic tracks such as « Far » and « Blazed« . Guillaume, the singer, invites the audience to open the pit, which is shy at the start of their set. On stage he sets an example by performing two steps during instrumental passages.

The Parisians end their set with “Break” and invite spectators to meet them at their merch stand at the end of the concert.
A short wait and it’s Ashen who enters the stage at 8:00 p.m. The metalcore group, also from Paris, sets up a totally different atmosphere from FreeHowling upon its arrival and we can see that many people had come to see them this evening. After a short introduction the group launches “Angel” followed by “Chimera”. In the audience we are starting to run out of space and the group’s fans are singing along to the lyrics.
Ashen announces « Sacrifice » recently released as a feat with Aaron from Ten56 and, this time, the singer comes on stage to sing his parts on the track. The public is delighted and in the middle of the pit, people start to jostle.
A short break follows during which Clément explains that Ashen‘s first date at Petit Bain was for the opening of Novelists a while ago. This time the group is very happy to open for Crystal Lake and hopes that the date will be memorable for the public.
“Desire” follows just after this speech and at the end of the track the musicians leave the stage to leave only the singer during an interlude with a melancholy and soaring atmosphere. We greatly appreciate this enhancement of Clément‘s timbre then Tristan returns to the drums at the end of the interlude in order to give an even different impact.
When the other members of the band return, Ashen launches “Sapiens” then a cover of “Smell like teen spirit” by Nirvana. The whole audience sings the words of this cult title and Ashen‘s passage comes to an end with « Outlier« .
During Ashen‘s set, the Petit Bain pit was well and truly filled and the atmosphere became even more festive. During the break before Crystal Lake arrives, the room is not empty, quite the contrary! The fans are more impatient to see the Japanese take the stage.
Upon its arrival, Crystal Lake was acclaimed by its audience who responded to the meeting for this date at Le Petit Bain. The band members seem very happy to be back and their energy is infectious. It’s all smiles as the band begins their set with « Prometheus« , a relatively old track (2015) which dates from « The Sign« . Long-time fans are delighted and so is the band, the members of Crystal Lake interact a lot with the audience. From the first sound the atmosphere is crazy and Yudai, the guitarist on our right, throws himself into the audience with his guitar in hand.
“SIX FEET UNDER” is launched, without pause, just behind. The public reacted like clockwork. For our part, we are immensely happy to find in tonight’s set a track from « True North » (2016) which has been one of our favorite albums for several years! John‘s vocal performance is, of course, different from that of Ryo (former singer, currently with KNOSIS) but we quickly get the hang of it and the new Crystal Lake is definitely great.
The titles follow one another almost without interruption, no respite is granted and the audience quickly gets very hot. Despite everything we hear “It’s been a long time” and “Welcome”. The group is very receptive to this enthusiasm, the members of Crystal are excessively smiling and show that they are really happy to be there. In the front rows it’s almost difficult not to take guitar licks as Yudai plays near the edge of the stage and we imagine that it’s the same thing on the left side with TJ.
The singles “Machina” and “Mephisto” follow one another in succession, the atmosphere never descends into a pit that is more eventful than ever.
“Aeon”, single from the album “Helix” (2019) is launched behind and the instant hype in the public who shows their joy by singing the lyrics from the beginning of the sound. The title in question being very jerky, the ggane pit is still in violence and the crowdsurfers appear in the show. They go on stage to throw themselves back into the audience (the Petit Bain does not have a photo pit with a barrier, the audience is right on the stage).
The titles always follow one another at breakneck speed, we are treated to the incredible combo of “Denial” and “Rebirth”, two pieces released recently (2023) and with which the Japanese metalcore group returned in strength with its new singer. We really appreciate this live performance which differs somewhat from the rest of the set since John does not cover the parts sung by Ryo. We feel a different investment especially when “Blüdgod” follows right behind. The group’s latest single is only a few weeks old but the public is screaming part of the lyrics to their hearts. The Japanese note that their latest release has won over its audience.

“OPEN WATER” a title originally released in 2011 is played just behind by the Japanese. A wave of nostalgia for the oldest fans to feel. However, the album « THE VOYAGES » was re-recorded in 2020. We are extremely happy that the group decided to play old songs, that’s always a pleasure! The Crystal Lake set, more than sporty in the pit, always unfortunately coming to an end. And the Japanese close this evening in the best possible way by releasing two iconic titles from their discography. The atmosphere is more than crazy during “Watch me burn” (2020) and the extraordinary “Apollo” (2019).
Crystal Lake will not play an encore this evening but its setlist, although short (twelve tracks), will have greatly satisfied us. The group thanks its audience once again, we feel the emotions of the members who are very happy to tour in Europe, and we know that the Japanese have always loved performing here. We waited several years for this return but the incredible atmosphere and the group’s performance were worth it! Crystal Lake continues its tour in Europe including its participation at Graspop and Hellfest!
