Anthrax – Cursum Perficio [FR/EN]

After a 10-year wait since For All Kings, we had never had to wait this long for a new Anthrax studio album. The New Yorkers are back with Cursum Perficio, released by Nuclear Blast, marking their major comeback.

If fans of the band have certainly felt the wait for a new album, the record almost seems to play on that feeling, as it opens with Persistence of Time, an intro that gradually builds up the atmosphere. The same goes for the second track, The Long Goodbye, which does not quite get to the heart of the matter yet, but continues to create a sense of anticipation for the listener. It is on It’s For The Kids, the album’s first single, that the band finally lets loose and we get to hear the group’s traditional thrash metal. The track is powerful and direct, establishing itself as one of the album’s most memorable songs.

The rest of the album, however, feels slightly monotonous and repetitive. Despite several listens, it is difficult to fully immerse yourself in the record and find any real points of reference or particularly memorable moments. Some tracks contain good moments, interesting riffs, or catchy melodies, but everything feels somewhat diluted across an album that is ultimately too long. In this respect, a parallel can be drawn between Cursum Perficio and 72 Seasons (2023), the latest album by Metallica: both albums have their good moments, but some tracks, such as The Edge of Perfection by Anthrax, seem to have been stretched out as much as possible, when they might have been more effective if they were shorter and more direct.

After a long wait, and after being particularly active on stage this year, including an appearance at Hellfest and several dates at French venues, Anthrax has returned with its twelfth studio album. The record contains some good songs and great moments, but overall it nevertheless feels slightly monotonous and occasionally a little too long.
