Quelques mois après le retour historique de New Found Glory en terre française, les véritables figure de proue du pop-punk reviennent sur le devant de la scène avec leur douzième album studio, le premier depuis Forever + Ever x Infinity, paru il y a déjà six ans. Lors du passage du groupe au Slam Dunk France à Lyon, nous avions déjà pu entendre un premier extrait de cet album avec 100%, le premier single issu de l’album mais il nous tardait de découvrir l’album en intégralité.
Depuis les débuts du groupe en 1997, New Found Glory nous a habitué à un rythme de sorties assez élevé et malgré la grave maladie qui touche Chad Gilbert, guitariste et contributeur essentiel à la recette de NFG, les floridiens ne faiblissent pas et nous offre un nouveau chapitre à son histoire. Le groupe n’a par ailleurs jamais fait de pas de travers (à ne pas confondre avec des pas de côté!) dans sa discographie et Listen Up! n’en est toujours pas un. On retrouve tous les éléments qui font de New Found Glory un groupe phare de la scène pop punk : des refrains catchy, un rythme toujours effréné et une énergie intacte. Le groupe ne réinvente pas le style et l’album n’est pas non plus un pas de côté dans sa discographie, mais ce n’est pas grave. C’est même presque rassurant que NFG, malgré bientôt 30 ans de carrière, est en mesure de toujours proposer des albums qui sonnent comme si ils n’en avaient que 5.
Au delà de leurs sonorités pop-punk, le groupe maintient également ses influences hardcore dans ses compositions, avec notamment des parties instrumentales assez heavy, comme sur le morceau Beer and Blood Stains, sûrement le morceau le plus influencé hardcore de l’album, qui comporte d’ailleurs un breakdown. Ces riffs de guitare lourd apporté par Chad, qui incarne le mieux les influences hardcore du groupe, contrastent toujours brillamment avec la voix très mélodique et parfois particulièrement aigüe de Jordan Pundik. On retrouve aussi des thématiques et des lyrics assez familiers avec notamment des chansons d’amour ou d’amitié innocentes et simplistes (dans le bon sens du terme) comme Laugh It Off, A Love Song ou Treat Yourself mais aussi un peu de nostalgie et un clin d’œil à leurs origines géographiques sur Beer and Blood Stains. On retrouve aussi une version full band / electric de Dream Born Again, un morceau que les plus attentifs avait déjà découvert en version acoustique dans le magnifique EP Make The Most of It (2023). De cette remarque découle peut être la seule critique qu’on peut émettre à l’album : il ne comporte que neuf « nouveaux morceaux » et peut paraître un peu léger en terme de contenu. Ceci dit, le groupe a désormais pour habitude de dévoiler quelques mois après la sortie initiale de l’album, une version augmentée de quelques titres bonus. On espère donc désormais une version 200% de Listen Up!
New Found Glory n’a pas réinventé son style avec Listen Up! mais ce douzième album studio demeure une réussite et vient continuer de garnir une discographie sans faux pas. Le style du groupe, profondément pop-punk mais toujours influencé hardcore, reste terriblement efficace et toujours d’actualité.

A few months after New Found Glory’s historic return to French soil, the true standard-bearers of pop-punk are back in the spotlight with their twelfth studio album, the first since Forever + Ever x Infinity, released six years ago. When the band played at Slam Dunk France in Lyon, we had already been able to hear a first preview of the album with 100%, the record’s lead single—but we were eager to discover the album in its entirety.
Since the band’s beginnings in 1997, New Found Glory have accustomed us to a fairly steady release pace, and despite the serious illness affecting guitarist and key contributor Chad Gilbert, the Floridians show no signs of slowing down and offer us a new chapter in their story. The band has also never really put a foot wrong (not to be confused with taking a stylistic detour!) in its discography, and Listen Up! is no exception. All the elements that make New Found Glory a flagship band of the pop-punk scene are present: catchy choruses, relentlessly fast tempos, and undiminished energy. The band doesn’t reinvent the style, and the album isn’t a departure within their discography either—but that’s not a problem. In fact, it’s almost reassuring that NFG, after nearly 30 years of career, can still deliver albums that sound as if they’d only been around for five.
Beyond their pop-punk sound, the band also maintains its hardcore influences in its compositions, notably through fairly heavy instrumental sections, such as on Beer and Blood Stains—probably the most hardcore-influenced track on the album, which even features a breakdown. These heavy guitar riffs brought by Chad, who best embodies the band’s hardcore influences, always contrast brilliantly with the very melodic—and sometimes particularly high-pitched—voice of Jordan Pundik. Familiar themes and lyrics also make a return, including innocent and straightforward (in the best sense of the word) songs about love and friendship such as Laugh It Off, A Love Song, or Treat Yourself, along with a bit of nostalgia and a nod to their geographical roots on Beer and Blood Stains. We also get a full band / electric version of Dream Born Again, a track that attentive listeners had already discovered in acoustic form on the beautiful EP Make The Most of It (2023). This observation perhaps leads to the only criticism that can be made of the album: it only features nine “new” songs and may feel a little light in terms of content. That said, the band has now made a habit of releasing, a few months after the album’s initial release, an expanded version including a few bonus tracks. So now we can only hope for a 200% version of Listen Up!.
New Found Glory may not have reinvented their style with Listen Up!, but this twelfth studio album remains a success and continues to enrich a flawless discography. The band’s style—deeply rooted in pop-punk yet always influenced by hardcore—remains tremendously effective and as relevant as ever.
