[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Le premier album de Vended était très en attendu par les afficionados du genre Nu-Metal (et notamment par les fans de Slipknot, ne le cachons pas). Et ce premier opus tout simplement Vended est disponible depuis quelques semaines en auto-production.
L’Intro est littéralement ce qu’on peut attendre d’un groupe comme Vended, ça grésille , ça larsen et ça tape en arrière-plan, c’est presque angoissant de sentir ce faux calme avant la tempête annoncée et c’est sur un enchaînement direct que débute Paint The Skin, les influences sont détectées directement, c’est du Nu Metal somme toute très classique mais avec la voix qu’il faut et celle de Griff Taylor est très adaptée à ce style musical, le refrain est très entêtant et c’est un morceau qui saura en faire headbanger plus d’un. Ce morceau pourrait être considéré comme la présentation de Vended au monde (« We are the shame in the make.We’re the headache that you get just as you wake ») ou encore le Welcome To Our Show scandé plusieurs fois sur le morceau. The Far Side est déjà bien connu de leur fan-base puisque déjà sorti avant l’album et c’est un des meilleurs morceaux de Nu Metal actuel, les influences des années 2000 sont ici digérées mais quand même très exploitées c’est accrocheur et direct comme ce que faisait Slipknot il y’a bien longtemps! Griffin Taylor prouve d’ailleurs sur le refrain qu’il est tout aussi bon chanteur que son père (il serait pour lui bien difficile de le renier de toute façon tant leurs voix sont similaires et c’est aussi pour ça qu’on aime Vended, une voix reconnaissable et déjà bien connue).
Am I The Only One va rester dans cette lignée de morceaux fédérateurs avec ses lignes de guitares très mélodiques qui se couplent parfaitement à la rythmique de la batterie. Going Up est un court interlude presque sans intérêt avant le single Nihilism, ce morceau est une bombe et on comprend aisément pourquoi, c’est brutal sans trop l’être, c’est rapide avec des back vocals qui seront repris par la fosse en live tout comme le refrain en chant clair. Les nostalgiques du Neo Metal des années 2000 seront une fois de plus gâtés avec ce titre et le break finira d’échauffer les esprits (« Shut up, get the fuck inside! Shut the fuck up, get inside »), simple et efficace en bref tout ce qu’on aime. Pitiful semble avoir une rythmique plus pesante qui donne un côté plus inquiétant au morceau, le tout renforcé par le scream de Griffin. Serenity semble dévoiler le côté plus « vulnérable » de Vended, le chant clair est plus présent mais les paroles sont aussi tournés vers le thème de l’isolement (« Call my name and I will say « just leave me all alone ». Someday I will break out of this shell that I’ve become »), un morceau brut sur lequel le groupe a particulièrement travaillé le plan émotionnel. Disparager et ses lignes de basse épaisses se range dans la même catégorie qu’un morceau comme Pitiful avec des passages plus sombres avant des explosions vocales ou des riffs tout aussi incisifs.
Les trois derniers titres sont plutôt anecdotiques durant moins de 2 minutes chacun. Le premier Ones semble accorder une pause bienvenue dans toute cette déferlante de haine tandis que Downfall revient à quelque chose de plus brut sur lequel Simon Crahan montre toute l’étendue de son talent notamment avec le solo de batterie au milieu du morceau, le morceau final As We Know It, une minute de riffs, de chant clair et de hurlements en arrière-plan. Une outro parfaite qui semble présager du très bon pour la suite (en espérant qu’il y’en ait une).
Vended a sorti un très bon album de Nu Metal en faisant un travail intéressant au niveau des ambiances mais aussi au niveau des émotions. Même si leur influence principale est clairement omniprésente, cela ne leur porte absolument pas préjudice et fait de ce premier album, un album aux relents nostalgiques que les millenials écouteront avec bonheur!

[ENGLISH VERSION] Vended‘s debut album was eagerly awaited by Nu-Metal afficionados (and Slipknot fans in particular, let’s face it). And this first opus, simply Vended, has been available for a few weeks now as a self-production.
The Intro is literally what you’d expect from a band like Vended: sizzling, feedback and banging in the background, it’s almost eerie to feel this false calm before the predicted storm, and Paint The Skin begins with a straightforward sequence, The influences are immediately apparent, this is classic Nu Metal, but with the right vocals, and Griff Taylor‘s is very well suited to this style of music. This track could be seen as Vended‘s introduction to the world (“We are the shame in the make.We’re the headache that you get just as you wake”) or the Welcome To Our Show chanted several times throughout. The Far Side is already well known to their fan-base, having already been released before the album, and is one of the best Nu Metal tracks of the moment. The influences of the 2000s are digested here, but still very much exploited: it’s catchy and direct, just like Slipknot used to do a long time ago! Griffin Taylor proves on the chorus that he’s just as good a singer as his father (it would be hard for him to deny him anyway, as their voices are so similar, and that’s why we love Vended, a recognizable and already well-known voice).
Am I The Only One will continue in this line of unifying tracks, with its melodic guitar lines and rhythmic drumming. Going Up is a short, almost pointless interlude before the single Nihilism, but it’s easy to see why this track is such a bomb: it’s brutal without being too brutal, it’s fast with back vocals that will be taken up by the crowd live, as will the clear-sung chorus. Nostalgic fans of Neo Metal from the 2000s will once again be spoilt for choice with this track, and the break will finish by warming the spirits (« Shut up, get the fuck inside! Shut the fuck up, get inside »), simple and effective in short, everything we love. Pitiful seems to have a heavier rhythm that gives the track a more ominous edge, reinforced by Griffin‘s scream. Serenity seems to reveal Vended‘s more “vulnerable” side, the clean vocals are more present but the lyrics are also turned towards the theme of isolation (« Call my name and I will say ‘just leave me all alone’. Someday I will break out of this shell that I’ve become »), a raw track on which the band have worked particularly hard on the emotional level. Disparager, with its thick bass lines, falls into the same category as a track like Pitiful, with darker passages before vocal explosions or equally incisive riffs.
The last three tracks are rather anecdotal, lasting less than 2 minutes each. The first Ones seems to provide a welcome break from all the hate, while Downfall returns to something more raw, on which Simon Crahan shows the full extent of his talent, notably with the drum solo in the middle of the track, and the final track As We Know It, a minute of riffs, clean vocals and howling in the background. A perfect outro that augurs well for what’s to come (hopefully).
Vended have released a very good Nu Metal album, doing an interesting job in terms of both ambience and emotion. Even if their main influence is clearly omnipresent, this does them absolutely no harm and makes this first album a nostalgic one that millennials will happily listen to!
