[English version below] Ce 18 février marquait le passage de Spiritbox à Paris pour un premier show en temps que main. Car oui, vous aviez peut être déjà vue la formation canadienne mais ce, en première partie ! Le groupe de Metalcore avait notamment ouvert pour Architects ou Bring me the Horizon dans notre belle capitale ! Avec un Olympia qui affichait sold out depuis quelques semaines, on peut dire que l’engouement était au rendez-vous ! C’est accompagné des américains de Stray From the Path et Periphery que Spiritbox faisait son premier European Tour. Nous avons pu nous rendre à cette date, merci beaucoup à Live Nation pour l’invitation !
C’est 19h quand le concert commence : Stray From the Path, originaire de New York, monte sur scène avec toujours cette même énergie folle. Dans le public, et ce dès le premier titre, ça saute de partout ! Le pit s’ouvre comme une explosion. Décidément les fans avaient fait le déplacement pour les premières parties également ! May you live forever est lancé juste derrière dans cette même vibe, le public lève les mains en rythme avec Andrew tandis que les premiers crowdsurfers font leur apparition. C’est la très connue III qui suit, le public se détend un peu sur le riff très raisonnable et sur le lequel le front man danse. Les lumières bleues, rouges et blanches rappellent la thématique du titre : une critique de la police aux États-Unis.
Andrew prend la parole et demande un immense circle pit dans l’Olympia : ses désirs sont des ordres et le public se fait une joie d’en créer un immense dans la salle : le set se poursuit sur Chest Candy et leur nouveau titre Kubrick Stare. Entre les deux titres le vocaliste de la formation prendra rapidement la parole pour remercier les fans de leur présence, à ceux qui sont fidèles comme aux nouveaux à qui il souhaite la bienvenue. Énormément de mains se sont levées quand il a demandé qui avait déjà vu Stray, c’est avec un grand sourire que le groupe a accueilli ce retour. L’apothéose du set des américains sera sur Fortune Teller : « Tonight we are an army, we are an army together, I want you to fort all that stress, that anxiety, this next song is your anthem, everybody jump ! « Guillotine suit juste derrière et clot le set du groupe en beauté : le pit est véritablement actif, les crowdsurfers qui ont défilés sur Fortune Teller continuent de mettre l’ambiance dans la salle ! De notre côté le temps a défilé sans qu’on s’en aperçoive : c’était décidément tellement bien qu’on en aurait voulu plus !
Avec un public plus que chauffé par la toute première partie de cette soirée, Periphery entre en scène à 20h pétante et enflamme la salle avec riffs méthodiques et mélodiques. Le chant est tantôt clair tantôt scream puissant, l’ambiance est lourde et le public est également présent pour le groupe de Metal Progressif : nous assistons à un wall of death dès Wildfire, premier titre du set.
Spencer, chanteur de la formation, explique à la fin du titre qu’il a été malade ces derniers jours et qu’il est très content d’être de retour sur scène. En effet Periphery avait joué sans son chanteur sur quelques shows de la tournée et cela semble avoir été tristement reçu par la formation elle-même.
Le groupe enchaîne sur un deuxième titre plus calme mais, qu’à cela ne tienne les fans organisent un petit circle pit pendant le refrain d’Atropos ainsi qu’un autre wall of death pendant le break du titre.
« This is an old shit » C’est sur un éclairage sombre et mystique que démarre Masamune. Le public saute de partout ! Le titre se fini par un presque solo du batteur mis en avant sur scène par les autres membres du groupe qui le regardent jouer.
Spencer prend la parole pour demander au public du bruit pour Stray from the path qui a joué avant eux et il en profite pour remercier Spiritbox de les avoir emmenés en tournée avec eux. The bad things et Chvrch bvrner se succèdent dans un public toujours aussi fou. L’explosion se fera cependant pendant la très attendue Marigold. Les guitaristes, qui sont trois dans la formation, jouent avec une facilité et une symbiose exceptionnelle sur scène. Ils se permettent même de se balader pour se checker au milieu de riffs techniques, c’est impressionnant de voir cela. La performance de Periphery nous laisse bouche bée quand, déjà, Spencer annonce le dernier titre de ce set bien trop court à notre goût, encore une fois !
C’est donc sur Blood Eagle, titre le plus heavy de son set que Periphery fini son passage ce soir. On assiste au retour des crowdsurfeurs dans le public qui saute de joie dès les premières notes du titre. Les américains quittent la scène en remerciant le public : « take care of each others, enjoy Spiritbox »
Il est 21h10 quand Spiritbox prend place sur les planches de l’Olympia. Dans le public, les gens hurlent Poppy pendant l’intro, le ton est donné ! Les canadiens sont venus avec une direction artistique à eux : une scène en escalier avec une place pour chaque musicien derrière Courtney et des écrans derrière chacun d’eux. Le tout se veut assez minimaliste mais efficace.
Dès le début du set la performance des musiciens comme celle de Courtney nous paraît impeccable, il n’est pas sans dire que l’accoustique de l’Olympia est particulièrement bonne. Cependant, contre toute attente le public semble inexistant, calme, posé. Peut-être est-ce parce que le groupe de Metalcore interagit très peu avec son public (à la différence de Stray et Periphery) ? Courtney ne prendra en effet que très peu la parole ce soir : « We are Spiritbox thanks you so much for being here tonight! » La chanteuse expliquera brièvement que le groupe est content d’être à Paris ce soir, que leur première venue remonte à 2021.
Pas de vrai partage donc mais plutôt des titres qui s’enchainent, efficacement mais au détriment de toute ambiance. Fata Morgana, Cellar Door et Jaded sont enchaînés à grande vitesse, on apprécie le timbre de Courtney et le jeu impeccable des musiciens de la formation. Alternant des titres anciens comme récents, tout fan de la formation pouvait trouver son bonheur dans la set de ce soir !
Si le public et le pit se font très timides sur le set de cette partie principale il est, cependant, des moments moins calmes (et encore heureux !). Ce sera le cas pour Circle with me et Soft Spine, tiré du dernier album sorti ce 7 mars. Le break de Circle with me sera en effet l’un des rares moments du set où le pit s’ouvrira, un évènement notifié par Courtney qui remercie donc le public. Il arrive cependant après plus d’une demi-heure de show ! Soft Spine sera l’occasion pour les fans de hurler à la fin du titre.
Mais l’apothéose de la soirée se fera sur deux titres en fin de set : No Loss, no love du nouvel album sur lequel Andrew de Stray from the path viendra chanter avec Courtney et surtout Holy Roller qui semble avoir été attendu comme jamais par la foule ! Ce sera la folie dans la salle pour ce titre qui reste aujourd’hui l’un des plus connus de la discographie des canadiens.
Sans rappel pour ce soir, Spiritbox finit son set par Constance en version partiellement acoustique, l’occasion pour nous de profiter du timbre de sa chanteuse avant de repartir de l’Olympia.
Nous quittons cette salle mythique vraiment mitigé : si nous avions déjà vu Spiritbox plusieurs fois, une chose est sûre, le partage avec le public et l’ambiance manquaient encore plus lorsqu’il s’agit du groupe phare de la soirée. Les premières parties, quant à elles, étaient vraiment explosives et nous sommes très contents d’avoir enfin vu Periphery en live. Quoi qu’il en soit les groupes ont, ce soir, délivrés une performance de folie et ce dans un Olympia où le son était nickel !
[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] This February 18th marked the passage of Spiritbox in Paris for a first show as a main. Because yes, you may have already seen the Canadian band but as an opening act! The Metalcore band had notably opened for Architects or Bring me the Horizon in our beautiful capital! With an Olympia that had been sold out for a few weeks, we can say that the craze was there! It was accompanied by the Americans of Stray From the Path and Periphery that Spiritbox made its first European tour. We were able to go on this date, thank you very much to Live Nation for the invitation!
It was 7pm when the concert began: Stray From the Path, originally from New York, took the stage with always the same crazy energy. In the audience, and this from the first song, it jumped everywhere! The pit opened like an explosion. Definitely the fans had made the trip for the first evenings too! May you live forever is launched just behind in this same atmosphere, the audience raises their hands in rhythm with Andrew while the first crowdsurfers make their appearance. It is the very well-known III that follows, the audience stretches a little on the very recognizable riff and on which the front man dances.
The blue, red and white lights recall the theme of the title: a criticism of the police in the United States.
Andrew takes the floor and asks for a huge pit circle in the Olympia: his wishes are orders and the audience is happy to create a huge one in the room: the set continues with Chest Candy and their new title Kubrick Stare. Between the two titles the singer of the band will quickly take the floor to thank the fans for their presence, to those who are loyal as well as to the new ones to whom he wishes welcome. A lot of hands are raised when he asked who had already seen Stray, it is with a big smile that the group welcomed this return. The apotheosis of the Americans’ set will be on Fortune Teller: « Tonight, we are an army, we are an army together, I want you to strengthen all this stress, this anxiety, this next song is your anthem, everybody jump! » On our side, time flew by without us noticing: it was definitely so good that we would have wanted more!
With an audience more than heated by the very first part of this evening, Periphery enters the stage at 8 p.m. sharp and sets the room ablaze with methodical and melodic riffs. The singing is sometimes clear, sometimes powerful scream, the atmosphere is heavy and the audience is also there for the progressive metal band: we witness a wall of death from Wildfire, the first song of the set.
Spencer, the singer of the band, explains at the end of the song that he has been sick these last few days and that he is very happy to be back on stage. Indeed Periphery had played in its singer on some shows of the tour and this seems to have been sadly received by the band itself. The band continues with a second calmer title but, never mind the fans organize a small pit circle during the chorus of Atropos as well as another wall of death during the break of the title.
« This is an old shit » It is on a dark and mystical lighting that Masamune starts. The audience jumps everywhere! The title ends with an almost solo of the drummer highlighted on stage by the other members of the band who watch him play.
Spencer takes the floor to ask the audience for noise for Stray from the path who played before them and he takes the opportunity to thank Spiritbox for having taken them on tour with them. The bad Things and Chvrch bvrner follow one another in an audience still as crazy. The explosion will take place during the highly anticipated Marigold. The guitarists, who are three in the band, play with ease and exceptional symbiosis on stage. They even allow themselves to walk around to check themselves in the middle of technical riffs, it’s impressive to see that. Periphery‘s performance leaves us speechless when, already, Spencer announces the last song of this set that is far too short for our taste, once again!
So it is on Blood Eagle, the heaviest song of his set that Periphery ends his performance tonight. We witness the return of the crowdsurfers in the audience who jump for joy from the first notes of the song. The Americans leave the stage thanking the audience: « take care of each other, enjoy Spiritbox »
It is 9:10 p.m. when Spiritbox takes its place on the Olympia stage. In the audience, people shout Poppy during the intro, the tone is set! The Canadians came with their own artistic direction: a stepped stage with a place for each musician behind Courtney and screens behind each of them. The whole thing is meant to be quite minimalist but effective.
From the beginning of the set, the performance of the musicians like Courtney‘s seems impeccable, it goes without saying that the acoustics of the Olympia are particularly good. However, against all expectations the audience seems non-existent, calm, posed. Maybe it’s because the metalcore band interacts very little with its audience (unlike Stray and Periphery)? Courtney will indeed speak very little tonight: « We are Spiritbox thanks you so much for being here tonight! » The singer will briefly explain that the band is happy to be in Paris tonight, that their first visit dates back to 2021.
No real sharing then but rather tracks that follow one another, efficiently but to the detriment of any atmosphere. Fata Morgana, Cellar Door and Jaded are played at high speed, we appreciate Courtney‘s tone and the impeccable playing of the band’s musicians. Alternating between old and new songs, any fan of the band could find what they were looking for in tonight’s set!
If the audience and the pit are very shy during the set of this main part, there are, however, less calm moments (and thank goodness!). This will be the case for Circle with me and Soft Spine, taken from the latest album released on March 7. The break of Circle with me will indeed be one of the rare moments of the set where the pit will open, an event noted by Courtney who therefore thanks the audience. However, it arrives after more than half an hour of show! Soft Spine will be the occasion for the fans to scream at the end of the song.
But the apotheosis of the evening will be on two songs at the end of the set: No Loss, no love from the new album on which Andrew from Stray from the path will come to sing with Courtney and especially Holy Roller which seems to have been expected like never before by the crowd! It will be madness in the room for this song which remains today one of the most famous of the discography of the Canadians.
Without an encore tonight, Spiritbox finished its set with Constance in a partially acoustic version, the opportunity for us to enjoy the tone of its singer before leaving the Olympia.
We left this legendary venue with mixed feelings: if we had already seen Spiritbox several times, one thing is sure, the sharing with the audience and the atmosphere were even more lacking when it came to the flagship band of the evening. The first parts, for their part, were really explosive and we are very happy to have finally seen Periphery live. In any case, the bands delivered a crazy performance tonight and this in a venue where the sound was perfect!
