Savage Lands c’est le projet de Sylvain Demercastel et Dirk Verbeuren face à la déforestation de la forêt tropicale au Costa Rica. Le groupe est également une association à but non lucratif et grâce à leur chanson, ils veulent préserver 100 000 mètres carrés de forêt. On a pu les découvrir en France durant le Hellfest où le groupe avait également un stand au Hellcity. Leur premier album, Army of the Trees réunit de nombreux featuring et sera disponible dès le 14 février, via Season of Mist.
L’album débute avec Black Rose Heart et son introduction assez étrange, composée de bruits clairs qui ressemblent à un carillon. Ce dernier prend de plus en plus de place et tout s’arrête avant que les instruments arrivent et que le chant enchaîne. Cela crée une ambiance assez intense et même les petits piques de chant clair de Poun ne calme pas l’ensemble. Un début d’album qui en impose, qui est lourd et percutant. Les deux chants ont leur moment privilégié où ils sont mis en avant, notamment avec celui de Poun créant un moment plus intimiste et captivant. Les deux chants se répondent très bien et les instruments sont toujours aussi lourds, jusqu’à la dernière partie où on découvre un solo endiablé et profond qui vient nous surprendre. Un premier titre où il se passe de nombreuses choses, totalement intense et captivant. Ruling Queen ouvre sur la batterie, brutale et captivante qui donne directement le ton. Ouvrir par un solo est une façon originale de débuter, elle est rejointe par une guitare puissante et entêtante. Le chant semble plus haché, avançant pas à pas jusqu’à nous conduire au chant clair qui donne une ambiance différente et profonde. On reprend le jeu avec les différents chants et notamment celui d’Alicia White-Gluz, qui nous procure quelques frissons avec son chant clair. Un nouveau solo arrive et c’est celui de notre second guest, Kenneth Andrews qui nous transporte et ouvre l’ensemble vers une nouvelle dimension, le rendant encore plus grand et fort. Une belle façon de conclure ce morceau. The Last Howl débute sur un solo de guitare, toujours aussi captivant, doux et qui nous transporte directement. Ce passage dure pratiquement une minute avant l’arrivée du chant et des autres instruments. C’est fort, puissant et le choc est radical. J’aime beaucoup le mélange du chant clair et les quelques piques plus graves. Les choses montent en douceur et nous conduisent à un nouveau solo de guitare de la part d’Andreas Kisser. Ce sont des passages que j’apprécie car ils donnent un petit quelque chose en plus et créent une ambiance atmosphérique. Le chant de John Tardy est intéressant et contraste parfaitement avec le chant clair, plus calme.

No Remedy ouvre sur une guitare, d’abord lointaine elle prend de plus en plus de place et crée un côté atmosphérique assez sympa. Le chant vient s’y poser et conserve ce côté chill et aérien, notamment appuyé par le chant de Maria Franz. J’aime beaucoup la douceur qui en sort et qui monte petit à petit et s’impose de plus en plus. Les instruments restent un peu discrets mais donnent quand même une belle dynamique, tout comme l’ajout de chœurs. Un titre qui change et qui permet de faire une petite pause. Out of Breath nous offre un changement radical, avec quelque chose de plus dur et de soutenu, notamment au niveau de l’instrumentalité. On oscille entre différents chants et cela crée quelque chose d’original et montre une vraie force. J’aime beaucoup l’énergie qui en découle et la dualité entre moments plus calmes et ceux plus énervés. C’est vers la moitié que nous nous faisons surprendre par une explosion de violence, suivie d’un solo à la guitare incroyable. Le titre se termine avec un chant féminin plutôt parlé et qui vient calmer le jeu. Better Man commence fort et c’est le chant qui vient calmer quelque peu les choses. Les instruments suivent et cela crée un sentiment de flottement et on se prend facilement au jeu. On découvre des passages qui tapent un peu plus, sur de courtes durées, jouant sur la profondeur. Un solo de guitare arrive vers la fin, continuant à créer une ambiance plus aérienne et j’aime beaucoup la touche que cela donne.
Never Be Up crépite dès son introduction, qui donne un ton différent et rapide. Le titre donne envie de se déhancher dans tous les sens et j’aime beaucoup le rythme ici. Le chant de Poun colle parfaitement ici et est très bien mis en avant. Durant la dernière partie, la batterie est également mise en avant, apportant un changement intéressant, redonnant du rythme et introduisant un solo de guitare endiablé. Army of the Threes est un titre qui mélange de nombreux de guest. L’ensemble est très énergique et rentre dedans dès les premières secondes. Cela se calme un peu avec le refrain, qui semble percer. Il apporte quelque chose de changeant et de percutant, donnant le sentiment de partir dans tous les sens, ne sachant plus où donner de la tête. Un nouveau solo de guitare ressort de tout cela et semble monter toujours plus haut. J’aime beaucoup l’ajout de paroles en français, qui renforce le tout et sont plus percutants. Visions of Life à une instrumentalité dynamique et un chant qui prend un peu plus son temps. Cela évolue doucement et pousse de plus en plus, jusqu’à avoir une instrumentalité plus soutenu. L’arrivée du solo de guitare reste dans le même ton et vient même rendre le titre plus grandiose. Le refrain rentre vite en tête, notamment avec un chant dynamique. C’est la basse qui ouvre sur Addicted et nous propose quelque chose d’assez lourd. Le chant vient la rejoindre mais donne un tout autre ton, prenant son temps. Les choses s’accélèrent doucement et donnent plus d’énergie à l’ensemble. L’ambiance se démarque ici car elle est différente des titres précédents. De beaux scream viennent ponctuer les passages plus lents et crée un rendu efficace. Une très belle façon de conclure cette écoute !
Savage Lands nous livre un album puissant et captivant. Il y a une belle collection de guest apportant chacun quelque chose en plus et donnant une identité différente et intéressante à l’ensemble. Un très bon album, à écouter sans modération !

We were able to discover them in France during Hellfest where the group also had a stand at Hellcity. The album begins with Black Rose Heart and its rather strange introduction, composed of clear noises that resemble a chime. The latter takes up more and more space and everything stops before the instruments arrive and the singing continues. This creates a rather intense atmosphere and even Poun’s little clear singing peaks don’t calm the whole thing down. An impressive start to the album, which is heavy and punchy. The two songs have their special moment where they are highlighted, especially with Poun’s creating a more intimate and captivating moment. The two songs respond very well to each other and the instruments are still as heavy, until the last part where we discover a wild and deep solo that surprises us. A first track where many things happen, totally intense and captivating. Ruling Queen opens with the drums, brutal and captivating which directly sets the tone. Opening with a solo is an original way to start, it is joined by a powerful and heady guitar. The vocals seem more choppy, advancing step by step until leading us to the clear vocals which give a different and deep atmosphere. We resume the game with the different vocals and in particular that of Alicia White-Gluz, who gives us some chills with her clear vocals. A new solo arrives and it is that of our second guest, Kenneth Andrews who transports us and opens the whole towards a new dimension, making it even bigger and stronger. A beautiful way to conclude this piece. The Last Howl begins with a guitar solo, always so captivating, soft and which transports us directly. This passage lasts almost a minute before the arrival of the vocals and the other instruments. It is strong, powerful and the shock is radical. I really like the mix of the clear vocals and the few lower peaks. Things rise gently and lead us to a new guitar solo from Andreas Kisser. These are passages that I appreciate because they give a little something extra and create an atmospheric atmosphere. John Tardy’s singing is interesting and contrasts perfectly with the clear, calmer singing.

No Remedy opens with a guitar, initially distant it takes up more and more space and creates a quite nice atmospheric side. The singing comes to rest there and retains this chill and airy side, notably supported by the singing of Maria Franz. I really like the sweetness that comes out and which gradually rises and becomes more and more evident. The instruments remain a little discreet but still give a nice dynamic, as does the addition of choirs. A title that changes and allows you to take a little break. Out of Breath offers us a radical change, with something harder and more sustained, especially in terms of instrumentality. We oscillate between different songs and it creates something original and shows real strength. I really like the energy that results from it and the duality between calmer moments and more angry ones. It’s around the halfway point that we are surprised by an explosion of violence, followed by an incredible guitar solo. The track ends with a rather spoken female song which calms things down. Better Man starts strong and it is the song which calms things down somewhat. The instruments follow and this creates a feeling of floating and we easily get caught up in the game. We discover passages which are a little more striking, over short durations, playing on depth. A guitar solo comes towards the end, continuing to create a more ethereal atmosphere and I really like the touch it gives.
Never Be Up crackles from its introduction, which sets a different and fast tone. The title makes you want to shake your hips in all directions and I really like the rhythm here. Poun’s vocals fit perfectly here and are very well highlighted. During the last part, the drums are also highlighted, bringing an interesting change, giving back rhythm and introducing a wild guitar solo. Army of the Threes is a title that mixes many guests. The whole is very energetic and gets into it from the first seconds. It calms down a little with the chorus, which seems to break through. It brings something changing and percussive, giving the feeling of going in all directions, not knowing where to turn. A new guitar solo emerges from all this and seems to climb higher and higher. I really like the addition of French lyrics, which reinforce everything and are more percussive. Visions of Life has dynamic instrumentality and vocals that take a little more time. It evolves slowly and grows more and more, until it has a more sustained instrumentality. The arrival of the guitar solo remains in the same tone and even makes the title more grandiose. The chorus quickly enters the head, especially with dynamic singing. It is the bass that opens Addicted and offers us something quite heavy. The singing comes to join it but gives a completely different tone, taking its time. Things slowly speed up and give more energy to the whole. The atmosphere stands out here because it is different from the previous titles. Beautiful screams punctuate the slower passages and create an effective rendering. A very nice way to conclude this listening!
Savage Lands delivers a powerful and captivating album. There is a beautiful collection of guests, each bringing something extra and giving a different and interesting identity to the whole. A very good album, to listen to without moderation!
