[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Après un premier EP King Of Terrors sorti l’année dernière, President revient cette année avec un premier album complet intitulé Blood Of Your Empire qui sera disponible ce 4 septembre via Warner Music.
L’album s’ouvre sur le single Angel Wings, la voix si reconnaissable de President s’élève rapidement encadrée par des nappes plus Electro avant que les riffs de guitares et la batterie ne viennent soutenir leur vocaliste qui nous gratifie de parties puissantes tout en alternant avec un contraste presque plus « »Rap » » sur les couplets et plus soft qui n’en restent pas moins intéressant! Encore une fois, PRESIDENT prend position contre l’endoctrinement et les religions dans une rage profondément athée et exacerbée notamment lors du Breakdown. On se sent comme dans une boucle avec les morceaux proposés sur ce premier opus et ce sentiment se renforce sur DOOM LOOP et sa Timeline tragique, qui navigue d’ailleurs dans un « brouillard » électro qui n’en reste pas moins bon avant que les guitares ne regagnent du terrain sur le refrain mais ce qui frappe encore une fois le plus, ce sont les performances vocales notamment le scream qui vient déchirer cette espèce de quiétude mise en place par le morceau avant que le refrain final ne revienne sur quelque chose de plus Rock tout en gardant aussi un esprit relativement Pop. L’intro du dernier single en date dark heaven est seulement accompagnée d’une boîte à rythme avant qu’encore une fois la session instrumentale ne soit complète sur le refrain et le deuxième couplet qui mettent aussi en avant des boucles de synthés en valeur.
Ce qu’on pouvait reprocher aux morceaux précédents, c’était ce côté Heavy sans trop l’être, le Scream présent sans trop l’être mais heureusement Pink Noise change la donne en alternant le tout en le faisant de la juste manière, avec aussi ces synthés qui virevoltent presque autour des autres instruments avant un break qui permet presque de respirer avant un côté plus accentué et la voix du chanteur presque déformée. Probablement un des meilleurs titres sur Blood Of Your Empire. Mais le meilleur morceau de ce premier opus est littéralement Sleepwalker, le capital Emotion est très présent, la performance vocale juste et touchante, l’instrumental valorise le tout à la perfection. Tout comme Dionysus qui représente également très bien le savoir-faire de la formation anglaise!
Les derniers morceaux de l’album présentent quelques touches plus expérimentales proposées par President notamment des voix transformées voir robotiques, du piano mais aussi du saxophone sur This Will Divide Us, Hate Figure est un featuring avec Ando San connu pour être un guitariste de génie qui rappe aussi et apporte un côté plus urbain sur un titre clairement plus « musclé » que tout le reste du disque avant le final sur White Devil littéralement le morceau le moins convaincant sur l’album, un ovni peut-être un peu trop original avec une ligne de piano qui autant le dire est vraiment très bizarre et donne une atmosphère vraiment singulière à l’ensemble qui aurait pu être au final sûrement plus intéressant.
Au final, PRESIDENT nous droppe un album vraiment intéressant oscillant entre morceaux convaincants, inédits entre les singles qui promettent encore de très belles choses pour les lives ou tout simplement pour la suite de leur carrière (déjà bien florissante pour leur frontman) et prises de risque intelligentes et originales même si certaines ne trouveront peut-être pas leur public! Well Done, Mr PRESIDENT!

[ENGLISH VERSION] Following their debut EP *King Of Terrors*, released last year, President are back this year with their first full-length album, *Blood Of Your Empire*, which will be available on 4 September via Warner Music.
The album opens with the single ‘Angel Wings’, with President’s instantly recognisable voice soaring to the fore, framed by more electro-style layers, before the guitar riffs and drums come in to support the vocalist, who treats us to powerful passages whilst alternating between a more ‘rap’-style delivery on the verses and softer passages that are no less compelling! Once again, PRESIDENT takes a stand against indoctrination and religion with a deeply atheistic fury, which is particularly heightened during the ‘Breakdown’. You feel as though you’re in a loop with the tracks on this debut album, and this feeling is reinforced on ‘DOOM LOOP’ and its tragic ‘Timeline’, which, incidentally, navigates through an electro ‘fog’ that’s nonetheless effective, before the guitars regain the upper hand on the chorus; but what strikes you most once again are the vocal performances – particularly the scream that shatters the sense of tranquillity established by the track – before the final chorus returns to a more rock-oriented sound whilst retaining a relatively pop-inspired feel. The intro to their latest single, ‘Dark Heaven’, is accompanied solely by a drum machine, before the instrumental section once again comes into its own during the chorus and the second verse, which also showcase some standout synth loops.
What one might have criticised about the previous tracks was that ‘heavy’ feel without really being heavy, and the scream that was there without really being there; but fortunately, ‘Pink Noise’ turns the tables by alternating these elements in just the right way, with synths that almost twirl around the other instruments before a break that gives you a moment to catch your breath, followed by a more pronounced edge and the singer’s almost distorted vocals. Probably one of the best tracks on *Blood Of Your Empire*. But the standout track on this debut album is undoubtedly *Sleepwalker*: the emotional intensity is very much present, the vocal performance is spot-on and moving, and the instrumental arrangement complements it all perfectly. Just like *Dionysus*, which also showcases the English band’s expertise to great effect!
The final tracks on the album feature some more experimental touches from President, notably distorted, even robotic, vocals, piano and saxophone on ‘This Will Divide Us’. ‘Hate Figure’ is a collaboration with Ando San, known as a genius guitarist who also raps, bringing a more urban feel to a track that’s clearly more “heavy” than the rest of the record, before the finale with “White Devil”—literally the least convincing track on the album, a bit of an oddity that’s perhaps a little too original, with a piano line that, let’s face it, is truly very strange and lends a truly unique atmosphere to the whole thing, which could surely have been more interesting in the end.
All in all, PRESIDENT have delivered a truly interesting album, oscillating between compelling tracks – including previously unreleased ones alongside the singles, which still promise great things for live performances or simply for the rest of their career (already flourishing for their frontman) – and intelligent, original risks, even if some may not find an audience! Well done, Mr PRESIDENT!
