[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Premier concert Metal de l’année à la maison et c’est avec Napalm Death! Actuellement en tournée Européenne avec Crowbar, Full Of Hell et les déjantés Brat, les anglais font un crochet en ce 28 février par Angoulême. Le premier groupe Brat était littéralement LE groupe pour lequel je faisais le déplacement et quelle ne fut pas ma déception de constater que Liz (vocaliste) malgré une entrée fracassante et énergique sur scène ne chantera pas ce soir! En effet, aphone et ayant été hospitalisée sur la tournée en raison d’une bronchite, elle se contentera de rejoindre ses camarades pour chaque intro de morceaux telles que Britney Spears, Shania Twain ou encore ABBA pour danser et headbanger, pendant que le guitariste reprend ses parties de chant. Mais la surprise est totale quand Kirk de Crowbar monte lui aussi sur scène pour interpréter Barracuda (initialement en featuring avec Goatwhore) tout comme Dylan de Full Of Hell qui remplacera la chanteuse sur le morceau suivant malheureusement pour nous Barney de Napalm Death ne fera pas d’apparition ce soir (mais le lendemain), le vocaliste anglais serait-il en train d’apprendre les paroles de Brat pour assurer un morceau? Ce serait plutôt logique! Le set va se conclure avec un changement de guitariste effectivement le merch-guy de Brat va prendre la relève pendant que le guitariste d’origine va insuffler un dernier moment plein d’énergie à la salle! On retrouvera le groupe au complet à la fin de la soirée à leur stand de merch pour des photos et des dédicaces et même Liz malgré le fait qu’elle ne puisse pas parler s’est prêté au jeu avec un grand sourire! En espérant revoir Brat en France très prochainement!
Full Of Hell était un des deux groupes que j’attendais le plus après les avoir découverts sur un remix de…Chelsea Wolfe! Et malheureusement là aussi la déception fut grande…Le son était beaucoup trop fort et rendait le chant de Dylan inaudible… 16 morceaux seront présentés ce soir dont une cover de Oven des Melvins et avec les conditions sonores c’est au bout d’à peine 5/6 morceaux que j’ai préféré quitter la salle pour faire un tour sur les stands de merch des groupes de la soirée et force est de constater une chose : c’est la première fois depuis très longtemps que les prix sont aussi abordables!
Crowbar a été LA grosse surprise de la soirée! Du lourd, du gras orchestré par le groupe de NOLA et mené par la légende Kirk Windstein (Down). Même si le Sludge n’est pas franchement un de mes styles de prédilection, je constate qu’une grande majorité du public s’est autant déplacée pour eux que pour la tête d’affiche ce soir. Le frontman prend plaisir à communiquer avec le public entre les 10 titres que Crowbar va jouer ce soir. C’est l’album éponyme de 2010 qui sera majoritairement représenté ce soir dans la set-list et tout le reste sera littéralement un best-of de ce que sait faire de mieux la formation. En bref, une chouette découverte et une très bonne ambiance également dans la fosse!
La soirée va donc se finir avec Napalm Death! Une entrée en scène simple, un public qui commencera à se déchaîner très rapidement et 24 morceaux de qualité supérieure! Napalm Death c’est l’énergie pure du Punk sur des morceaux de Grindcore. Les titres s’enchaînent très rapidement et le public a à peine le temps de reprendre son souffle que Barney et ses compères ré-enchaînent directement sur la suite quand le chanteur ne prend pas le temps de présenter les morceaux ou encore de parler des valeurs représentées par le groupe! Resentment Always Simmers, Narcoleptic, When All Is Said And Done , Dead , Suffer The Children , le public retrouve ses titres préférés avec certains plus récents comme notamment Resentment. Après 5 voir 6 concerts de Napalm Death, une chose est sûre c’est que Barney au chant continue à avoir une forme olympique sur scène, court partout (c’est bon pour le cardio apparemment), fait des mimiques comme si il était possédé pendant les morceaux et finira probablement le set sur les genoux. Après le cultissime Scum , le public sait déjà que le set va approcher de la fin c’est donc avec leur cover des Dead Kennedys , Nazi Punks Fuck Off et Unchallenged Hate que Napalm Death va terminer le set de ce soir! Comme d’habitude, pas besoin de résumer ce concert, c’était juste du très bon Napalm Death!
[ENGLISH VERSION] First Metal gig of the year at home, and it’s with Napalm Death! Currently on a European tour with Crowbar, Full Of Hell and the insane Brat, the English band will be stopping off in Angoulême on 28 February. Thanks to Jillian from Oktober Promotion for the accreditation!
The first band, Brat, was literally THE band I’d made the trip for, and I was very disappointed to discover that Liz (vocalist), despite her dazzling and energetic entrance on stage, won’t be singing tonight! In fact, having been hospitalised during the tour due to bronchitis, she will be content to join her bandmates for each intro of songs by Britney Spears, Shania Twain or ABBA to dance and headbang, while the guitarist resumes her singing. But it was a complete surprise when Kirk from Crowbar also took to the stage to perform Barracuda (originally featuring Goatwhore), as did Dylan from Full Of Hell, who replaced the singer on the following track. Unfortunately for us, Barney from Napalm Death didn’t make an appearance this evening (but did the next day), so could it be that the English vocalist is learning the lyrics to Brat in order to provide a song? That would be rather logical! The set concludes with a change of guitarist, with Brat‘s merch-guy taking over while the original guitarist brings the house down with a final burst of energy! At the end of the evening, the band were back in full force at their merch stand for photos and autographs, and even Liz, who couldn’t speak, got in on the act with a big smile on her face! Hope to see Brat in France again very soon!
Full Of Hell was one of the two bands I was most looking forward to after discovering them on a remix of…Chelsea Wolfe! The sound was far too loud and made Dylan‘s vocals inaudible… 16 tracks will be presented this evening, including a cover of Oven by the Melvins, and given the sound conditions, it was after barely 5/6 tracks that I preferred to leave the venue to take a look at the merch stands of the evening’s bands, and we have to admit one thing: it’s the first time in a very long time that the prices are so affordable!
Crowbar was THE big surprise of the evening! The NOLA band, led by the legendary Kirk Windstein (Down), orchestrated a heavy, fat set. Even though sludge isn’t exactly one of my favourite styles, I can see that the vast majority of the crowd turned out for them as much as for the headliner this evening. The frontman takes pleasure in communicating with the audience between the 10 tracks Crowbar will be playing tonight. The 2010 album of the same name will feature heavily in tonight’s set-list, and everything else will literally be a best-of selection of the band’s best work. All in all, a great discovery and a great atmosphere in the pit too!
The evening ended with Napalm Death! A simple stage entrance, a crowd that starts to go wild very quickly and 24 top quality tracks! Napalm Death is pure punk energy set to grindcore tracks. The tracks come thick and fast, and the crowd barely have time to catch their breath before Barney and his mates are right back into it, when the singer doesn’t take the time to introduce the songs or talk about the values represented by the band! Resentment Always Simmers, Narcoleptic, When All Is Said And Done , Dead , Suffer The Children , the crowd were treated to their favourites, along with some more recent ones such as Resentment. After 5 or even 6 Napalm Death concerts, one thing’s for sure: Barney on vocals is still in top form on stage, running around (good for the cardio, apparently), miming as if possessed during the songs and probably ending the set on his knees. After the cult hit Scum, the crowd already knew that the set was drawing to a close, so Napalm Death ended tonight’s set with their cover of Dead Kennedys , Nazi Punks Fuck Off and Unchallenged Hate! As usual, there’s no need to summarise this concert, it was just great Napalm Death!
