[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Le troisième album de Magnolia Park intitulé VAMP sera disponible dès demain (11 avril) via Epitaph Records. Ce nouvel album est probablement le plus ambitieux réalisé par le groupe à ce jour! En effet il s’agit d’un Concept-Album qui se déroule dans la ville fictive de Nocturne Nexus, une ville futuriste et tentaculaire qui se développe dans les étendues sauvages de la Shrouded Forest. L’histoire suit une guerrière mi-humaine, mi-cyborg nommée Aurora X1 qui est le chef d’un groupe rebelle de guerriers vampires appelé les Shadow Breakers et est à la tête d’une rébellion visant à renverser le régime oppressif du Shadow Cult, qui se trouve être dirigé par son père biologique. C’est le titre PAIN qui va ouvrir ce nouvel album sur un rythme rapide très inspiré Metalcore! Joshua (chant) est particulièrement performant sur les couplets (notamment le deuxième sur lequel son chant clair est très bien mis en valeur) avant une partie screamée et un refrain hymnique. Et surtout ce break qui va tout retourner! PAIN représente les Shadow Breakers opprimés vivant dans une ville souterraine (Nocturne Nexus) et s’indignant du pouvoir mis en place. Le dernier single en date SHADOW TALK est clairement influencé par la scène Nu-Metal, on retrouve la voix claire de Joshua mais aussi du scream sur des passages qui retourneront un pit sans effort quand au refrain il est presque construit comme un hymne. On peut noter également l’inclusion de certaines choses comme une partie rappée par le chanteur sur le bridge mais aussi des chuchotements relativement bizarres (voir clairement lugubres) qui pourrait suivre l’histoire que raconte le groupe sur ce nouvel opus. En effet, le père de notre héroïne (Aurora) appelé Obsidian possède un certain pouvoir : celui de contrôler les esprits par des chuchotement. SHADOW TALK pourrait donc être l’introduction (ou le thème) de ce méchant.
CULT montre une agressivité débordante, rien d’étonnant donc à ce qu’il parle de l’entrée en guerre des Shadow Breakers contre les Shadow Cult. Pour l’instant c’est littéralement le morceau le plus heavy sur l’album avec une rythmique archi dynamique, un refrain en forme d’hymne qui rentrera dans toutes les têtes très facilement et du scream en Fry, Joshua montre à chaque album de nouvelles facettes de sa palette vocale et c’est toujours très réussi!
WORSHIP est un featuring avec l’artiste Vana mais également avec PLVTINUM! Cet autre single est assez innovant car ici on retrouve des sonorités considérées plus comme Electro ce qui tranche avec l’univers de Magnolia Park habituellement. Ici l’atmosphère générale du morceau comme la thématique des paroles rappellerait presque Bad Omens (dans nos références modernes). Le groupe a déclaré s’être inspiré de l’histoire d’amour tordue de Nosferatu pour ce morceau. Vana interprète ici le deuxième couplet du morceau qui traite de la frontière entre passion et possession.
Dernier single dans la tracklist mais premier à être sorti, SHALLOW avec son atmosphère sombre il pourrait se rapprocher de WORSHIP avec son refrain et sa thématique d’amour toxique :
« The only time you love me’s when the lights out
Callin’ me your hero when you’re facedown
Kissin’ on my neck you had me on a cloud
But now I can see
Now I can see
Your love is so shallow »
Magnolia Park sait faire de chacun de ses singles, des bangers et SHALLOW n’échappe pas à la règle, certains passages peuvent rappeler Deftones notamment sur le passage à 2:38 où la voix du chanteur se veut plus…sirupeuse? C’est probablement l’effet recherché et ça fonctionne avant de ré-enchaîner sur un dernier refrain! OMEN ralentit (un peu) le rythme et part sur quelque chose de plus expérimental et Magnolia Park arrive parfaitement à s’affranchir de tout les codes des différentes scènes sur ce titre. WASTED revient aux racines Pop-Punk de la formation, ce genre de morceaux nous manquait pas mal suite au virage plus lourd du groupe mais au final ce mélange entre des morceaux de ce style et ceux plus agressifs est juste parfait! CRAVE est l’ultime featuring de VAMP avec PINKNOISE cette fois-ci. On pourrait presque croire à un morceau dans la même veine que WASTED mais le break va encore venir tout ravager comme l’amour toxique vers lequel se redirige Aurora , ce titre suivant le thème du désir de toxicité et d’amour malsain. C’est le morceau OPHELIA qui conclut cet album. Dans l’histoire des Shadow Breakers, Ophelia est la soeur adoptive d’Aurora et elle n’a apparemment pas une fin heureuse, le morceau a une atmosphère très sombre et presque dépressive et à la vue des thèmes abordés (la mort et le deuil) ici ce n’est pas vraiment étonnant :
« This world wasn’t good enough for you.
Can you tell me, where do we go when we die? »
Magnolia Park propose un nouvel album à la hauteur de nos attentes avec un nouvel univers dans lequel leurs compositions prennent vie. L’histoire racontée par la formation aura apparemment une suite et il nous tarde déjà de la connaître. En espérant un passage en France très vite!

[ENGLISH VERSION] Magnolia Park‘s third album, VAMP, will be available tomorrow (11 April) via Epitaph Records. This new album is probably the band’s most ambitious to date! It’s a Concept-Album set in the fictional city of Nocturne Nexus, a futuristic, sprawling city growing out of the wilds of the Shrouded Forest. The story follows a half-human, half-cyborg warrior named Aurora X1 who is the leader of a rebel group of vampire warriors called the Shadow Breakers and is spearheading a rebellion to overthrow the oppressive regime of the Shadow Cult, which happens to be led by her biological father. PAIN opens the new album with a fast, metalcore-inspired beat! Joshua (vocals) performs particularly well on the verses (especially the second, where his clean vocals come to the fore) before a screamed section and an anthemic chorus. And above all, the break that turns everything upside down! PAIN surely represents the oppressed Shadow Breakers living in an underground city (Nocturne Nexus) and resenting the powers that be. The latest single, SHADOW TALK, is clearly influenced by the Nu-Metal scene, with Joshua‘s clear voice as well as screaming passages that will effortlessly turn a pit upside down, while the chorus is almost built like an anthem. The chorus is almost anthemic in its construction. There’s also a bit of rapping by the singer on the bridge, as well as some relatively bizarre (if not clearly gloomy) whispering that could follow the story the band are telling on this new opus. Indeed, the father of our heroine (Aurora) called Obsidian possesses a certain power: that of controlling spirits by whispering. SHADOW TALK could therefore be the introduction (or theme) for this villain.
CULT is a very aggressive track, so it’s not hardly surprising that it’s talking about the Shadow Breakers going to war with the Shadow Cult. So far, it’s literally the heaviest track on the album, with an ultra-dynamic rhythm, an anthemic chorus that’s sure to get stuck in everyone’s head, and some Fry-like screaming. Joshua shows off new facets of his vocal range on every album, and it’s always a great success!
WORSHIP features Vana and PLVTINUM is one of the other singles is quite innovative, as here we find sounds considered more as Electro, which contrasts with Magnolia Park‘s usual universe. The general atmosphere of the track and the theme of the lyrics are almost reminiscent of Bad Omens (in our modern references). The band have said that they were inspired by the twisted love story of Nosferatu for this track. Here, Vana sings the second verse of the track, which deals with the boundary between passion and possession.
The last single in the tracklist but the first to be released, SHALLOW, with its dark atmosphere, could be similar to WORSHIP with its refrain and its theme of toxic love:

Magnolia Park know how to turn each of their singles into bangers, and SHALLOW are no exception to the rule, with some passages reminiscent of Deftones, particularly on the passage at 2:38 where the singer’s voice becomes more…syrupy? That’s probably the effect we were aiming for, and it works, before the chorus kicks in again! OMEN slows down the pace (a little) and goes for something more experimental, and Magnolia Park manages to break free of all the codes of the different scenes on this track. WASTED returns to the band’s pop-punk roots, a genre we’d been missing a fair bit following the band’s heavier turn, but in the end this mix between tracks in this style and more aggressive ones is just perfect! CRAVE is VAMP‘s final featuring with PINKNOISE this time. It almost sounds like a track in the same vein as WASTED, but the break comes in again and ravages everything, just like the toxic love to which Aurora redirects herself, this track following the theme of toxic desire and unhealthy love. OPHELIA concludes the album. In the Shadow Breakers story, Ophelia is Aurora‘s adopted sister, and she doesn’t seem to have a happy ending. The track has a very dark, almost depressive atmosphere, and given the themes it deals with (death and mourning) this isn’t really surprising:

Magnolia Park have come up with a new album that lives up to our expectations, with a new world in which their compositions come to life. The story told by the band will apparently have a sequel, and we can’t wait to hear what it is. We hope to see them in France very soon!
