Si Madball n’a pas ralenti son rythme de tournée avec toujours autant de dates, en première partie, en headline ou en festivals, le groupe n’avait pas sorti d’album depuis For The Cause, sorti en 2018. Not Your Kingdom, le dixième album du groupe, paru chez Nuclear Blast Records met fin à cette attente.
Bien identifié par son style très dépouillé, urbain et aux influences hip hop, comme en atteste son album phare, Set It Off (1994), le style des New Yorkais a évolué depuis la fin des années 2000. Le groupe s’est dirigé vers un hardcore plus direct, moderne et plus à même de toucher une audience plus large que le seul public hardcore. C’est dans cette tendance que s’inscrit ce nouvel album, qui, comme les précédents, garde tout de même intact l’esprit de Madball : un décor et une ambiance qui se veut urbaine, un sentiment global d’agressivité et d’urgence. Cette ambiance est notamment posée par les deux interlude qui composent l’album, et ces dernières introduisent également judicieusement les morceaux Rebel Kids et Life’s A Mural, qui font partie des moments forts de l’album.
Cet album était d’autant plus attendu qu’il était le premier sorti sans la présence du bassiste historique et emblématique du groupe, Hoya Roc, suite à son départ en 2023. Ce départ laisse Freddy Cricien seul en tant que membre historique du groupe, les autres musiciens ayant rejoint le groupe au plus tôt en 2012. Force est de constater que cette absence ne se fait pas ressentir et que Freddy n’a pas de mal à incarner seul l’esprit de Madball, que ce soit sur album ou en live. Son chant est toujours aussi rageur, impactant et il constitue la signature du son du groupe. Habitué à incorporer des featuring dans ses derniers albums studios, comme c’était le cas avec Tim Armstrong dans For The Cause ou Scott Vogel dans Hardcore Lives, c’est cette fois Killing Time qui participe au morceau Clockwork. Histoire de rappeler les origines Hardcore New Yorkaise de Madball!
Ce dixième album de Madball s’est fait attendre et sans être plein de surprise, ce nouvel opus de la bande à Freddy Cricien est néanmoins convaincant. Dans la continuité artistique des albums précédents, Madball nous donne une nouvelle dose de son hardcore à la fois pur et moderne et toujours teinté de ses origines urbaines.

Although Madball have not slowed down their touring schedule, continuing to play just as many dates as ever, whether as a support act, headliners or at festivals, the band had not released an album since For The Cause, which came out in 2018. *Not Your Kingdom*, the band’s tenth album, released by Nuclear Blast Records, finally puts an end to the wait.
Well known for their stripped-down, urban sound and hip-hop influences, as showcased on their landmark album Set It Off (1994), the New Yorkers’ style has evolved since the late 2000s. The band moved towards a more direct, modern form of hardcore, one more likely to appeal to a wider audience beyond the hardcore scene alone. This new album follows that same direction, while, like its predecessors, keeping the spirit of Madball fully intact: an urban setting and atmosphere, along with an overall sense of aggression and urgency. This mood is particularly established by the album’s two interludes, which also cleverly introduce the tracks Rebel Kids and Life’s A Mural, two of the album’s highlights.
The album was all the more eagerly anticipated as it was the first to be released without the band’s longtime and iconic bassist, Hoya Roc, following his departure in 2023. His exit leaves Freddy Cricien as the only original member of the band, with the other musicians having joined no earlier than 2012. It has to be said that his absence is hardly noticeable, and Freddy has no trouble carrying the spirit of Madball on his own, whether on record or live. His vocals remain as furious and impactful as ever, and they are a defining element of the band’s sound. Having become accustomed to featuring guest musicians on their more recent studio albums, as with Tim Armstrong on For The Cause and Scott Vogel on Hardcore Lives, this time Madball have invited Killing Time to contribute to the track Clockwork. A fitting reminder of Madball’s New York hardcore roots!
Madball’s tenth album has been a long time coming, and while this new release may not be full of surprises, Freddy Cricien’s band have nevertheless delivered a convincing record. Continuing the artistic direction of their previous albums, Madball give us another dose of hardcore that is both pure and modern, while still carrying the imprint of their urban roots.
