[ENGLISH BELOW] Le groupe britannique Defects s’apprête à sortir son tout premier album, Modern Error, ce vendredi 24 mai via Mascot Records. Le groupe fondé en 2019 est composé de Tony Maue (chant, ex The Raven Age), des guitaristes Luke Genders et James Threadwell, du bassiste David Silver et du batteur Harry Jennings (ex SHVPES).
Après une courte introduction sous forme d’annonce radio où sont repris les titres de l’album, c’est avec le morceau Scapegoat que va s’ouvrir ce premier album. Ce premier morceau va reprendre les codes du Metalcore/Metal Moderne avec des parties instrumentales très mélodiques mais aussi très lourdes mais également du Scream et du chant clair incroyablement maîtrisés par Tony. Une grande partie de cet album est centré sur des expériences personnelles du chanteur et Scapegoat n’échappe pas à la règle puisqu’il évoque une relation familiale à laquelle le chanteur ne parle plus depuis longtemps, cette personne sera également présente sur d’autres morceaux de Modern Error. End Of Days montre un côté plus mélodique du groupe même si le chant guttural reste bien présent dans les couplets, on retrouve un refrain qui sera à coup sûr repris en choeur par les fosses lors des prochains concerts du groupe. Le genre de morceau qui reste bien en tête avec son breakdown ravageur. J’avais découvert Defects avec le single Dream Awake qui reste probablement un de mes coups de coeur sur ce premier album, titre sur lequel le chant clair est majoritaire si on oublie le cri qui annonce un magnifique solo de guitare. Ce single évoque le fait d’être pris au piège dans une réalité numérique, les thèmes d’actualité semblent également être chers aux yeux du groupe puisque le sort de la planète est évoqué plusieurs fois sur End Of Day ou encore Modern Error.
Another Heart To Bleed est bien trompeur avec son intro mélancolique et presque trop douce mais c’est pour mieux amener l’énergie du groupe au morceau qui traite des mauvaises relations humaines. Tony continue à passer avec une facilité déconcertante du chant clair au scream Metalcore, une belle performance sur cet album tout comme celles des guitaristes. Recurring est probablement le morceau le plus lourd sur cet album même si Defects arrive à y injecter un refrain toujours très mélodique qui arrive parfaitement à s’intégrer à l’ensemble. Ce morceau traite de la santé mentale et des boucles mentales qui accompagnent les traumatismes. Echo Chamber est en lien direct avec Scapegoat mais dans une nouvelle perspective, le morceau commence de façon mélodique avant de finir par une tornade de cris et d’émotions qui prennent aux tripes, tout comme Lockdown, le titre semble avoir des influences de groupes comme Parkway Drive.
Après un court Interlude, Defects reprend avec le titre éponyme, Modern Error avant de laisser place à Broken Bloodlines en soit un morceau dans la lignée des précédents avec une ligne de guitare hyper mélodique qui traverse le morceau avant le solo presque final. Goliath conclut l’histoire commencée avec Scapegoat et Echo Chamber mais là sous une perspective cette fois-ci temporelle différente, là aussi Defects envoie un morceau très lourd à la face des auditeurs qui sera sûrement un des titres préférés sur ce premier opus quand aux parties de batterie sur Goliath, elles sont littéralement ravageuses, ce morceau est un vrai rouleau-compresseur. Second To None est encore une belle prouesse de la part du groupe (les amateurs de BLEGH seront ravis) avant le morceau final, Gone To Waste. Un final presque plus épuré et beaucoup beaucoup moins lourd que le reste de l’album, ce dernier morceau irait plus pencher du côté Hard Rock FM à la Daughtry ou encore Bad Wolves et c’est plutôt un compliment.
Ce premier album de Defects est un véritable raz de marée d’émotions brutes sur des morceaux qui le sont tout autant et qui parleront à un large panel. Le côté Metalcore très lourd est bien au rendez-vous pour les amateurs du pit mais ne vous focalisez pas sur ça, Defects est un grand groupe en devenir avec des musiciens excellents dans son line-up et un songwriting très qualitatif!

[ENGLISH VERSION] British band Defects are set to release their debut album, Modern Error, this Friday, May 24 via Mascot Records. The band, founded in 2019, is made up of Tony Maue (vocals, ex The Raven Age), guitarists Luke Genders and James Threadwell, bassist David Silver and drummer Harry Jennings.
After a short introduction in the form of a radio ad featuring the album’s titles, this first album opens with the track Scapegoat. This first track takes up the codes of Modern Metalcore/Metal, with very melodic but also very heavy instrumental parts, as well as Scream and clear vocals incredibly mastered by Tony. Much of the album is centered on the singer’s personal experiences, and Scapegoat is no exception, evoking a family relationship the singer hasn’t spoken to in a long time, a person who will also feature on other tracks on Modern Error. End Of Days shows the band’s more melodic side, even if the guttural vocals are still very much present in the verses, and there’s a chorus that’s sure to be taken up by the pits at the band’s next concerts. It’s the kind of track that sticks in your head with its devastating breakdown. I discovered Defects with the single Dream Awake, which probably remains one of my favorites on this first album, a track on which the clear vocals are in the majority, if you forget the scream that heralds a magnificent guitar solo. This single evokes the fact of being trapped in a digital reality, and topical themes also seem to be dear to the band’s heart, as the fate of the planet is evoked several times on End Of Day and Modern Error.
Another Heart To Bleed is deceptive, with its melancholy intro that’s almost too soft, but that’s to better bring the band’s energy to the track, which deals with bad human relations. Tony continues to switch between clean vocals and screaming metalcore with disconcerting ease, a fine performance on this album, as are those of the guitarists. Recurring is probably the heaviest track on the album, although Defects manage to inject a melodic chorus that blends in perfectly. This track deals with mental health and the mental loops that accompany trauma. Echo Chamber is directly related to Scapegoat, but from a new perspective, starting out melodically before ending with a tornado of screams and gut-wrenching emotions. Like Lockdown, the track seems to have influences from bands like Parkway Drive.
After a short Interlude, Defects picks up again with the eponymous Modern Error, before giving way to Broken Bloodlines, a track in the same vein as the previous ones, with a hyper-melodic guitar line running through the track before the near-final solo. Goliath concludes the story begun with Scapegoat and Echo Chamber, but this time from a different temporal perspective. Here too, Defects delivers a very heavy track that will surely be one of our favorites on this first opus, while the drum parts on Goliath are literally devastating: this track is a real steamroller. Second To None is another fine feat on the part of the band (BLEGH fans will be delighted) before the final track, Gone To Waste. An almost more pared-down finale and far less heavy than the rest of the album, this last track would lean more towards Hard Rock FM like Daughtry or Bad Wolves, and that’s quite a compliment.
Defects‘ debut album is a veritable tidal wave of raw emotion on tracks that are just as raw, and that will appeal to a wide range of listeners. The heavy metalcore side of things is there for the taking for fans of the pit, but don’t focus on that: Defects is a great band in the making, with excellent musicians in its line-up and top-quality songwriting!
