Cabal est de retour avec leur deuxième album : Everything Rots, qui fait suite à Magno Interitus (2022). Il est disponible depuis le 21 mars, via Nuclear Blast.
L’album débute avec Become Nothing et son introduction hachuré qui nous donne directement le ton. Le titre prend de plus en plus d’ampleur et devient insistant. Le chant vient apporter de la rapidité alors que l’instrumentalité reste assez lente. Une introduction courte mais efficace. Redemption Denied débute avec une instrumentalité rapide et une batterie qui semble totalement folle. Le chant vient renforcer la rapidité et semble sans fin. Le refrain lui laisse plus de temps, avec quelque chose de plus grave et de plus profond, qui contraste bien avec les instruments rapides. Le chant nous apporte pas mal de variations, allant jusqu’à un chant clair qui vient compléter l’ensemble. J’ai malgré tout un peu de mal avec ce morceau car certaines parties me semblent un peu décousues. Everything Rots ouvre sur un passage instrumental qui captive. Le chant arrive et crée un contraste avec les instruments qui sont assez doux et lents. L’accélération arrive progressivement, le chant capte notre attention et les deux rythmes se complètent bien. Les instruments vont s’effacer par moment, laissant le chant en avant mais on trouve aussi des passages instrumentaux intéressants. Un morceau globalement assez lent et avec une fin qui semble un peu expérimentale.

Avec No Peace arrive notre premier featuring de l’album et c’est avec Viscera. Les instruments tapent directement et le chant aérien vient parfaitement compléter le tout. Une bonne façon de lancer le titre, avec une ambiance rythmée. On a le sentiment de se faire écraser par l’ensemble avec des breakdown et growl impressionnants qui rendent le titre très complet. Les deux chants se complètent bien et créent des univers différents qui cohabitent. Hell Hounds est dynamique et le chant semble sauter sur les instruments, j’aime beaucoup ce genre d’introduction. L’instrumentalité semble ne jamais s’arrêter, même si on trouve de courtes pauses qui permettent de mieux repartir. Il se passe de nombreuses choses et vers le milieu les choses changent. On découvre une ambiance aux sonorités se rapprochant du genre Black Metal, qui se fondent parfaitement. L’ensemble reste violent mais prend une nouvelle proportion différente et plus complète. On continue les featuring avec Ten56. sur Still Cursed et celui-ci je l’attendais ! Une introduction différente où vient se poser un chant agressif mais qui semble sur la retenue. Le rythme est répétitif et entre rapidement en tête. Le chant d’Aaron Matts s’insère rapidement et les deux chants se répondent et accentuent la violence générale. Le rythme accélèrent jusqu’à s’arrêter à la deuxième partie. Le chant est plus lointain avant de revenir au premier plan et d’exploser avec différents scream. J’aime beaucoup l’instrumentalité ici et l’ensemble du titre qui est efficace.
Unveiled nous dévoile un nouveau featuring et ici c’est Nasty qui est mis à l’honneur ! Dès le début, une certaine agressivité et rapidité ressortent. C’est un véritable rouleau compresseur qui nous passe dessus. L’instrumentalité vient appuyer les différents scream et un léger changement d’ambiance va opérer à l’arrivée du featuring. Ce dernier apporte une touche plus légère et claire, avant d’enchaîner sur quelque chose de plus lourd. Le rythme est effréné, on découvre des sonorités différentes et tout se mélange très bien. Certainement le titre le plus énervé de cet album. L’introduction de Forever Marked nous apporte un peu de douceur avant que le reste du groupe arrive et apporte un peu plus d’agitation. Le titre semble quand même plus calme et un peu trop linéaire à mon goût. On se prend au jeu, on accroche rapidement au rythme et comment le morceau se déploie petit à petit. L’ensemble change, semblant plus carré et avec plus de lourdeur et de scream. Un morceau qui apporte quelque chose de différent, notamment grâce à sa construction qui se démarque. End Times ouvre sur le chant et ce dernier accapare directement l’attention. Le morceau accélère fortement et on découvre de beaux passages instrumentaux, donnant une belle profondeur à l’ensemble. Le chant reste fidèle à lui-même et semble foncer, apportant un côté plus brut. J’aime beaucoup la fin du titre et celui-ci représente bien l’identité du groupe.

Snake Tongues est certainement mon titre préféré. L’introduction change un peu mais garde cette même dynamique. On ajoute des sonorités électro et celles-ci vont être un véritable plus car elles sont très bien incorporées. Elles viennent également appuyer l’agressivité du chant. Alors que le groupe nous prépare à un breakdown, on se laisse surprendre par un passage électro, qui relance le titre est permet de clôturer en beauté. Un titre différent mais auquel j’ai totalement accroché. Stuck nous apporte un nouveau featuring et il est avec Aviana. Après quelques secondes très rapide, le titre propose une courte pause qui permet au chant d’arriver et de véritablement lancer le tout. Une nouvelle fois on se retrouve face à un concentré de violence, alternant avec des passages plus rapides et d’autres plus lents. Dès son arrivée, le featuring pose les choses et apporte une dimension incroyable. Le titre est très complet et joue sur pleins de sonorités différentes. Arrive le dernier titre de l’album et le dernier featuring avec Distant sur Beneath Blackend Skies. Le chant est fort et puissant dès les premières secondes, alors que l’instrumentalité semble plus calme. On retrouve ces sonorités plus accès Black Metal et qui permet d’accentuer la prise de vitesse juste après. On découvre encore de beaux passages brutaux et un featuring de qualité. Une belle façon de clôturer cet album.
J’ai eu un peu de mal avec les premiers titres de cet album mais il se révèle très bon et captivant. Le groupe continue d’étendre son univers et nous propose des choses incroyables et violentes comme on s’y attendait. Hâte de découvrir cela en live lors de leur tournée en première partie de Caliban.

Cabal is back with their second album, Everything Rots, the follow-up to 2022’s Magno Interitus. It’s out March 21st via Nuclear Blast.
The album begins with Become Nothing and its choppy introduction that immediately sets the tone. The song grows in volume and intensity. The vocals bring speed while the instrumentals remain quite slow. A short but effective introduction. Redemption Denied begins with fast instrumentals and drums that seem totally crazy. The vocals reinforce the speed and seem endless. The chorus gives it more time, with something deeper and more serious, which contrasts well with the fast instruments. The vocals bring us quite a few variations, going as far as clear vocals that complete the whole. I still have a little trouble with this song because some parts seem a little disjointed. Everything Rots opens with a captivating instrumental passage. The vocals arrive and create a contrast with the instruments, which are quite soft and slow. The acceleration comes gradually, the vocals capture our attention and the two rhythms complement each other well. The instruments will fade away at times, leaving the vocals to the forefront, but there are also interesting instrumental passages. Overall a fairly slow piece with an ending that seems a bit experimental.

With No Peace comes our first featuring of the album and it’s with Viscera. The instruments hit straight away and the ethereal vocals perfectly complement everything. A good way to launch the track, with a rhythmic atmosphere. We have the feeling of being crushed by the whole thing with impressive breakdowns and growls that make the track very complete. The two vocals complement each other well and create different universes that coexist. Hell Hounds is dynamic and the vocals seem to jump over the instruments, I really like this kind of introduction. The instrumentality seems to never stop, even if we find short pauses that allow us to start again better. Many things happen and towards the middle things change. We discover an atmosphere with sounds close to the Black Metal genre, which blend perfectly. The whole remains violent but takes on a new, different and more complete proportion. We continue the featuring with Ten56. on Still Cursed and this one I was waiting for! A different introduction where aggressive vocals come to rest but which seem restrained. The rhythm is repetitive and quickly gets into your head. Aaron Matts’ vocals quickly enter, and the two songs respond to each other, accentuating the general violence. The rhythm accelerates until it stops in the second part. The vocals are more distant before returning to the forefront and exploding with different screams. I really like the instrumentality here and the entire track, which is effective.
Unveiled unveils a new featuring and here it’s Nasty who is in the spotlight! From the beginning, a certain aggressiveness and speed stand out. It’s a real steamroller that rolls over us. The instrumentality supports the different screams and a slight change of atmosphere will take place with the arrival of the featuring. The latter brings a lighter and clearer touch, before moving on to something heavier. The rhythm is frenetic, we discover different sounds and everything blends very well. Certainly the most angry track on this album. The introduction of Forever Marked brings us a little softness before the rest of the group arrives and brings a little more agitation. The title still seems calmer and a little too linear for my taste. We get into the game, we quickly get hooked on the rhythm and how the song unfolds little by little. The whole thing changes, seeming more square and with more heaviness and scream. A song that brings something different, notably thanks to its construction which stands out. End Times opens with vocals, which immediately grab your attention. The song accelerates sharply and we discover beautiful instrumental passages, giving a nice depth to the whole. The vocals remain true to themselves and seem to go for it, bringing a more raw side. I really like the end of the song, and it represents the band’s identity well.

Snake Tongues is definitely my favorite track. The introduction changes a bit but keeps the same dynamic. Electro sounds are added, and these are a real plus because they are very well incorporated. They also support the aggressiveness of the vocals. While the band prepares us for a breakdown, we are surprised by an electro passage, which relaunches the track and allows us to close beautifully. A different track but one that I totally loved. Stuck brings us a new featuring and it is with Aviana. After a few very fast seconds, the track offers a short break that allows the vocals to arrive and really kick things off. Once again, we find ourselves faced with a concentration of violence, alternating with faster and slower passages. From the moment it arrives, the featuring sets things up and brings an incredible dimension. The track is very complete and plays on many different sounds. Then comes the last track of the album and the last featuring with Distant on Beneath Blackend Skies. The vocals are strong and powerful from the first seconds, while the instrumentals seem calmer. We find these more Black Metal-oriented sounds, which allow us to accentuate the speed just after. We discover again beautiful brutal passages and a quality featuring. A beautiful way to close this album.
I had a little trouble with the first tracks of this album but it turns out to be very good and captivating. The band continues to expand its universe and offers us incredible and violent things as we expected. Looking forward to discovering this live during their tour as support for Caliban.
