[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Deux ans…Cela fait déjà deux ans que Blessthefall ont signé leur grand retour avec le single Wake The Dead et l’attente a quand même été longue avant l’annonce de leur septième album studio mais ça y’est! Gallows arrive enfin ce vendredi 5 septembre via Rise Records.
C’est avec une intro auquel le groupe nous a habitué par le passé avec des riffs percutants et des hurlements qui gagnent en puissance que va s’ouvrir le single mallxcore. Dès le début on sent que Blessthefall n’a pas changée de recette et continue dans ses morceaux Metalcore typiques, avec des couplets puissants , une énergie renouvelée et des refrains interprétés par Beau Bokan en chant clair. Bref pour l’instant, on est en terrain conquis un peu comme sur Wake The Dead qui signait leur grand retour il y’a deux ans, retour qu’on n’attendait plus vraiment mais qui nous a ravit dès leur annonce! Mais Wake The Dead a un côté bien plus Heavy que mallxcore qui gardait un côté bien plus mélodique et cette lourdeur reste vraiment incroyable avec le Bridge qui donnera des envies de pit à tout un chacun! Venom continue dans la lignée des morceaux plus lourds tandis que Somebody Else commence par une partie plus calme avec du chant clair mais qui ne perdra évidemment pas en énergie même si principalement interprété en clean, les refrains restent accrocheurs tandis que les couplets permettent de reprendre son souffle. On retrouve d’ailleurs un très beau feat puisque le vocaliste du groupe Caskets, Matthew Flood vient poser sa voix, la collaboration est ici riche et intéressante.
Drag Me Under revient sur quelque chose de plus lourd avec des influences un peu plus Hardcore accentuées par la présence de Lochie de Alpha Wolf là encore une petite innovation de la part de BTF plutôt bienvenue d’ailleurs! Light The Flame change de structure avec un fondu dès le départ , le groupe enchaîne sur un break avant de passer sur un couplet en chant clair puis revient sur un break malgré tout ces changements de rythme, le morceau reste très bon et permet à ceux qui découvrent à peine Blessthefall d’en savoir plus sur les capacités vocales de Bokan. Ultime featuring sur Gallows cette fois-ci avec Dan Marsala de Story Of The Year sur Fell So Hard, Felt So Right, les deux voix se complètent ici parfaitement avant un break puissant qui se placera en parfait contraste avec la « douceur » ambiante du morceau. L’avant-dernier morceau Y.S.A.B (littéralement You’re Still A Bitch) revient sur du plus lourd pour amorcer la fin de ce nouvel opus et donne l’impression à l’écoute de pouvoir reprendre le pouvoir sur quelqu’un qui nous a enlevé notre lumière. On termine avec This Ends With Us et c’est typiquement le genre de composition Metalcore qu’on pourrait imaginer pour conclure un album, elle est sûrement plus mélodique que certaines autres présentes sur Gallows mais elle n’en est pas moins ennuyante avec son fondu qui conclu le tout en douceur même si les hurlements en arrière-plan continueront à nous hanter à la fin de la lecture et nous donnerons envie de presser la touche « Replay ».
Sept ans c’est long parfois très long entre deux albums et souvent les déceptions peuvent être au programme après une telle absence mais Blessthefall revient, conquérants pour reprendre une place qu’ils n’ont jamais vraiment perdue avec ce Gallows qui est un sans-faute du début à la fin. En espérant les revoir très vite en France!

[ENGLISH VERSION] Two years… It’s already been two years since Blessthefall made their big comeback with the single Wake The Dead, and the wait has been long for the announcement of their seventh studio album, but it’s finally here! Gallows is finally coming out this Friday, September 5, via Rise Records.
The mallxcore single opens with an intro reminiscent of the band’s past work, featuring powerful riffs and increasingly intense screams. From the outset, it’s clear that Blessthefall hasn’t changed its formula and continues to deliver its signature metalcore tracks, with powerful verses, renewed energy, and choruses sung by Beau Bokan in clean vocals. In short, for now, we’re on familiar ground, a bit like on Wake The Dead, which marked their big comeback two years ago, a comeback we weren’t really expecting but which delighted us as soon as it was announced! But Wake The Dead has a much heavier side than mallxcore, which kept a much more melodic side, and this heaviness remains truly incredible with the bridge that will make everyone want to mosh! Venom continues in the vein of heavier tracks, while Somebody Else starts off with a calmer section featuring clean vocals, but obviously doesn’t lose any energy. Even though it’s mainly performed cleanly, the choruses remain catchy, while the verses allow you to catch your breath. There’s also a very nice feature, as Caskets vocalist Matthew Flood lends his voice to the track, making for a rich and interesting collaboration.
Drag Me Under returns to something heavier with slightly more hardcore influences, accentuated by the presence of Lochie from Alpha Wolf, another small innovation from BTF that is very welcome indeed! Light The Flame changes structure with a fade-in from the start, the band follows up with a break before moving on to a clean verse and then returning to a break. Despite all these changes in rhythm, the song remains very good and allows those who are just discovering Blessthefall to learn more about Bokan‘s vocal abilities. The final feature is on Gallows, this time with Dan Marsala from Story Of The Year on Fell So Hard, Felt So Right. The two voices complement each other perfectly here before a powerful break that contrasts perfectly with the ambient “softness” of the song. The penultimate track, Y.S.A.B (literally You’re Still A Bitch), returns to a heavier sound to kick off the end of this new opus and gives the listener the impression of being able to regain power over someone who has taken away our light. We end with This Ends With Us, which is typically the kind of metalcore composition you would imagine to conclude an album. It is certainly more melodic than some of the other tracks on Gallows, but it is no less boring with its fade-out that ends the album on a gentle note, even if the screams in the background continue to haunt us at the end of the track and make us want to press the “Replay” button.
Seven years is a long time, sometimes a very long time between two albums, and often disappointment can be expected after such a long absence, but Blessthefall is back, ready to reclaim a place they never really lost with Gallows, which is flawless from start to finish. We hope to see them again very soon in France!
